There’s a concept of an ROI
an0malous··on Google Workspace thinks my domain is an email provider (2025)
I’m also worried that this is just the future of SaaS where everything is a Kafkaesque nightmare of automated processes no one even understands anymore, and even these incidents are lost in so much complexity the businesses either don’t care or don’t even know it’s happening.
an0malous··on Google Workspace thinks my domain is an email provider (2025)
My business Workspace account got suspended recently, no reason given, can’t even login to contact support. I’m a solo user so I only had one admin account and that was the one locked out. There was just one text field to submit an appeal, so I did. I never got any email confirmation or tracking number for my appeal, it’s been a week now with no contact from Google. This happened about a week after they charged my credit card for the subscription.

I’m now in the process of switching to Fastmail. Google doesn’t give a shit about anything besides for their golden goose, I would encourage everyone to move away from their services before they just screw you with no warning or recourse just because they can.

an0malous··on Digging the grave of my skills: Hollywood creatives training AI to do their jobs
Then why isn’t there even one good, 2-minute video produced with AI yet? Can you share one?

A few months ago, Coca Cola couldn’t even make a good 1 minute commercial with millions of dollars and a whole team of video producers and editors. It ended up just being a montage of 5 second clips of animals smiling at Coca Cola trucks.

an0malous··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
The private equity and venture capitalist playbook has always been enshittification: you either take an existing high quality product or innovate one subsidized with investment capital, then once it’s time to flip the business you 10x the price and cut costs (which usually cuts quality).

AI is the perfect tool for enshittification, because it can get you 80% of a finished product with a fraction of the costs it used to take, but the last 20% takes 2-5x times longer. So you just ignore the last 20%, make it up in volume by producing 100 mediocre products instead of 1 great one.

And that’s basically the state of the tech industry right now. I don’t think it’ll be like this forever, I think there will be better ways to collaborate with AI rather than wholesale delegation and prompting. But for now we’re stuck with mass enshittifation. People who have no sense of quality, taste, or craftsmanship don’t even understand, they skim over some generic blog post from Claude that takes five paragraphs to say one thing or watch the Coca Cola AI ad and don’t event notice it’s a different train in every shot and they think it’s so amazing. I hope this isn’t just the way things are now.

an0malous··on Ask HN: Does anyone else feel like nothing matters anymore?
If AI was actually as good as the VCs and execs want you to believe, there would be tons of new and exciting things being created every day and new opportunities for everyone. There isn’t though, the one cool new technology is the coding agents themselves. But there’s no amazing software, no awesome new games or movies, no breakthrough medicine, no new foods or biotech, no fun electronics or gadgets. Coca Cola couldn’t even make a decent 1 minute commercial with gen AI and millions of dollars, it was just a random sequence of trains driving through snow. Where is the promised techno utopia? It’s all just slop. The malaise is from these VCs force feeding us all slop and telling us this is the future. I’m not saying current AI isn’t impressive or useful, I’m just saying it hasn’t really made anything better yet. I don’t think it’ll be that way forever though. I’m still long term bullish on AI, I just don’t think transformers are enough. We need something that enhances creativity and innovation, that improves quality, not just make it faster and cheaper to put together mediocre products.

I think things will turn around by the end of next year, but not before some major reckoning. There is a lot of motivated reasoning going on right now with trillions of dollars at stake where people aren’t being discerning and honest about what AI is actually capable of, and a lot of circular cash flow that’s making it seem more successful than it really is. I think when it really arrives, we’ll see a creative explosion that enriches our lives, where everything isn’t just cheaper to make at 80% of its former quality but actually better quality too. And I believe the solutions for improving quality will surface the things that human beings can uniquely do that AI can’t and give meaning back to our lives, but right now we’re in a shitty in between phase.

an0malous··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
I think you intentionally sandbagged your prompt by dragging on and being repetitive and it’s still a better read than the LLM output.

There’s also a difference between “please edit my writing” and “please generate a blog post from these bullet points.”

It's more of a pipeline than a back-and-forth. New abilities happen in the cloud first because they require specialized, higher capacity resources and then move towards being local as the resource usage gets optimized.

> Like it or not, there is a large constituency who wants to “protect the children”.

Is there, though? The push is coming from lobbyists who seem to be largely funded by wealthy elites, corporations, and other opaque organizations. One of them seems to be Meta. It doesn’t look like a grassroots effort.

an0malous··on Illinois just passed a law that puts Linux on the hook for age verification
On the other hand, I don't know a single person or have even heard of people or organizations who are advocating to pass these laws. They want the war in Iran to stop and for costs to go down. How is there so much political willpower for the former and almost none for the latter?

an0malous··on An OpenAI Strategist Says AI Labs Should Rival Government Power
This is the guy who said open weight models are “decelerationist” and will lead to “AI communism” and a “dystopian hellscape” so I’d categorize him more as an OpenAI spokesperson than a strategist. His takes always sound more like someone who chugged the kool aid rather than any kind of rational take.

Yeah something broke during COVID. One factor was the stimulus created enormous wealth inequality, people who owned assets before that live like gods now and people who didn’t can’t even buy a home. The economic policies since then have exacerbated the issue.
