an0malous··on AI Safety Is Mostly a Sex Cult
I meant the modern community, I think they adopt the same “Rationalism” name. Basically the LessWrong community but HN is also pretty adjacent.
an0malous··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
I used to read a lot of LessWrong, Yudkowsky, SlateStarCodex. Rationalism is really just another religion, with the faith parts carefully tucked away underneath concepts like priors or how one chooses to construct a model or assign/“update” probabilities. Their god is ASI. Their beliefs have no more fundamental basis in truth than any other faith.

There’s also a fundamental problem with the idea of using models and probabilities for decision making in that one has to choose a model before deducing any facts, and this leads to all sorts of post hoc rationalization. It’s basically just a culture of people with weird preferences coming up with mathy rationalizations for them.

an0malous··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
I don’t know who you’re talking about, even the most bearish people like Gary Marcus and Ed Zitron acknowledge that LLMs are useful in these same cases the OP admits. Gary Marcus is even still a long term AI advocate, he just doesn’t think LLMs are enough and we need more foundational breakthroughs. Zitron says it’s valuable technology but not worth the trillion dollar valuations the frontier labs are claiming.

The lack of temperament is very skewed towards the bulls who have been saying AGI is here, software engineering is solved, mathematics is solved, it’s going to destroy the white collar job market, and it’s going to kill us all for like 5 years now.

an0malous··on A single firm is behind OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta hacking scandals
Which part of the headline is misleading? It is factually correct that Irregular was involved in incidents with all three AI labs.

It must have been reinstated because it was off the front page for a full day and suddenly back up in the last hour.

Why was this post flagged? This site has become ridiculous, people are routinely abusing the flagging system to take down posts they don’t like even if they’re obviously on topic and relevant to HN. And it seems like some users have substantially more flagging weight because these posts, likely this one, are often top 5 on HN.

an0malous··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
How many major companies are pushing unreviewed code to prod? Seems like mostly an early stage startup thing and their bugs and outages aren’t going to make the news. I’m skeptical that even a majority of Anthropic and GitHub’s code new code this year was unreviewed.

> the capability gap is underestimated.

Based off what? There’s pretty precise measurements of the capability gap where open weight models like Kimi K3 score higher than the latest flagship models just 6 months ago.

an0malous··on OpenAI considers slowing advanced AI development, Sam Altman tells employees
The one where it’s infeasible that a company that needs to live up to a valuation of like 5% of US GDP but is still burning cash and has no moat would willingly decide to slow down the pace of development of their core technology

> A procedural universe may be technically impressive but it is also bland, empty, purposeless.

Why doesn't this apply to Minecraft? People love Minecraft even though it's equally purposeless and arguably bland and empty.

an0malous··on How I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
I opened a Google Workspace account for my solo business to have an email address at my domain, got suspended a month later, had no way of contacting support since they require login and I was the only user, filed an appeal, got no response after a month, eventually contacted their Twitter support account and had access restored, but through this all they charged me for the subscription three times while I was locked out and before I could cancel. I contacted their support after I was restored and they said they wouldn’t refund me because the Workspace account wasn’t suspended just my individual user (even though they acknowledged I was the only user). I had receipts and screenshots of everything including confirmation from Google’s own UI that I was suspended for that entire period, but I just have to let Google steal $100 from me now because what else am I going to do?

Also their explanation for the lockout was that I failed the verification step too many times, which I don’t recall failing even once.

Libgen isn’t trying to sell you back the content for $100/month. No one would be complaining if OpenAI open sourced their models.

an0malous··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
They probably just had an employee read his chats, figure out the general approach, and feed it to Codex. All they said was the model doesn’t look up user data, not employees.
an0malous··on An Alien Mind
Claiming that AI will be valuable in 50 years is you moving the goalposts back 50 years. It’s a strawman argument, no one is saying it won’t be valuable in 50 years
an0malous··on An Alien Mind
I mean I’m waiting for like any quality software or media produced by AI. I have yet to see a piece of software, a game, graphic, blog post, small video clip, or song that was produced with AI that’s good. I always use that Coca Cola ad as an example; millions of dollars spent to make an AI ad and they even did a ton of manual post production and it sucked. With all the millions of bloggers and influencers and content creators out there with a huge incentive to make higher quality content to beat their competition, you’d think there would be one piece of content produced with AI that was great.
an0malous··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
They’re doing this on purpose for press. Why doesn’t this ever happen to any other AI lab?
an0malous··on OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra on ARC-AGI-3
Actually I can answer my own question: we know that they have had previous access to the tests because they’ve run older models against the same benchmark.

I wouldn’t put it past a company like OpenAI with a long history of lying and being deceptive to record the tests and benchmaxx ARC. They have trillions of dollars of incentive to cheat any way they can.

an0malous··on OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra on ARC-AGI-3
Was OpenAI able to run ARC-AGI-3 tests previously so that they could build a custom harness for the specific tests in the set? Even with the standard harness, if they knew the problems ahead of them they could have used supervised reinforcement learning to teach the model how to solve these specific tests.
