amyames··on Duolicious – Open-source dating app
Duolicious openly mocks its own users on Twitter. Calling them “chuds” and such. I guess if the shoe fits, wear it.

But what a childish company to advertise on 4chan and market itself as being for that audience, to then sit there using condescending and derogatory slurs about them.

Nice of them to open source everything so you can go make your own Duolicious with blackjack and hookers I guess.

amyames··on There are different sorts of WireGuard setups with different difficulties
>there are routes that try to send traffic to those IPs through WireGuard, such as a VPN 'route all traffic through my WireGuard link' default route

if you installed WireGuard on your default internet gateway and set AllowedIPs as 0.0.0.0/0 instead of the protected subnet.

I installed wireguard on a system that is not the default gateway. And yeah. It has AllowedIPs 0.0.0.0/0 , because it’s assumed that anything I route through it is meant to be routed over the vpn

Then on the gateway all traffic for x.x.x.x/16 is just a static route to that secondary system.

eg my normal NAT gateway is a cable modem at 10.0.0.1 , wireguard is 10.0.0.8 . Then I just have a specific route for 172.16.0.0/16 via 10.0.0.8 set on the cable modem UI (the cable modem UI does something called Static routes - equivalent to “routes in DHCP scopes”) and I don’t have this problem.

It’s not shoving all my internet traffic through the tunnel. Although that may be desired behavior for some people: ie you have a $5 unmetered VPS and want to hide your home IP at all times (maybe you like privacy or torrenting things.) Then go ahead and put wireguard on your gateway and set AllowedIps as 0.0.0.0/0

The main reason i don’t want this is because I have a gig connection and can “””only””” do about 300Mbps encrypted through the tunnel.

There’s some sites I think are clowns with privacy , or in one case are treating my home connection as spam or suspicious though. So I have their entire class A/B/C networks static routed through wireguard as well. (Off the top of my head, Microsoft/Azure, Bluesky (who won’t let me tap firehose from my home IP), Reddit, and all Cloudflare networks also have static routes via 10.0.0.8.)

amyames··on Meta Wants More AI Bots on Facebook and Instagram
I think when you click on the offending profile to block it, Facebook must decide that’s what you like to see. Or something.

Because some moron has 1000 profiles for “cars under $2500” and the more of them I clicked and blocked , the more of them would show up in my feed.

I hate that I can’t opt out of the “for you” stuff and don’t actually see anything from family or friends anymore . And I hate that the more I try to block a certain type of content (say: “Salma Hayek boobies”) the more I’m spammed with it.

So much that I have not even logged on in about a year.

amyames··on Little Snitch: Network Monitor and Application Firewall for macOS
I have grown weary of little snitch annoying me all the time but it was insightful about how much stuff Apple has me pinging by default: like yahoo.com for weather on boot just to name one.

This kind of angered me, I don’t want yahoo getting my ip anywhere I am in the world any time I turn on my computer. I think I found like 4-5 things that are baked into a clean Mac install these days that I took exception to and forbade.

Then Microsoft office and adobe are evil and constantly evading it and getting smacked down too.

amyames··on Has anyone else noticed Reddit being taken over by shills/bot/trolls
Meta sometimes responds to correspondence sent to their Oversight Board, c/c a copy to office of the CEO with your ID on the hacker way address.

This worked (this year) to restore an account of mine that was locked for over 8 years that none of their systems could or would review or resolve. They never replied to the letter, they just silently unlocked it and flagged my profile as verified.

I never received any warning or any reason for the suspension. I have a common name but am not impersonating anybody.

It ended up being a waste of time . I can no longer see friends or relatives or co workers. It’s all “for you” spam and I deleted it of my own accord after a week anyway.

On topic: yes the Overton window either moved a LOT on Reddit or they’re overwhelmed or don’t care anymore. Purely anecdotal in favor of a window shift; there are a lot of comments in /r/musked that would have gotten you a wide reaching if not site wide ban just a year ago (and still get you bans from /r/elonmusk and /r/teslamotors even if you’ve never posted there.) but for , I think, obvious reasons it’s almost impossible to take it “too far” on that subject or say anything harsh enough about that company or its owner on Reddit now.

Many examples of people or subjects that were untouchable and met with great force just a year or two ago that are fair game now. While probably not against the rules on HN, I don’t want to get into it. I stuck with a safer , mostly not political one.

Left-on-left criticism of the DNC is also apparently wide open now that the election is over. It would have been moderated or banned just two or three months ago. Not only does nobody care , but sometimes it’s even heavily upvoted.

I’m only in the USA for work and have no opinion on this but it’s hard not to notice it.

amyames··on CISA: Do not use SMS as a second factor for authentication [pdf]
a private party can deploy a stingray in an urban area and steal your text messages as readily as the sheriff’s department can.

nobody cares about mine, but this could be deployed near a residence where someone’s password or website is breached unbeknownst to them yet.

that could be a situation where they got a sysadmin or CEO or public figure and think they can get even more passwords leaks or breaches out of the target.

my email would be a snooze fest as I don’t have a personal account and don’t mix personal with business. but I do have credentials to lots of other peoples stuff.

which, sometimes due to their own decisions, could be reset from my email I guess.

I don’t use SMS for any of it because I have a non USA phone number which nobody supports anyway.

amyames··on Infamous paper that popularized unproven Covid-19 treatment retracted
whether it did or not,

HCQ (among other things like methylene blue from which it is derived) can’t be given to people who are g6pd deficient.

That will indeed cause the side effects of hemolytic anemia (loss of red blood cells, heart attacks, ICU, anemia) we see giving the drug to certain populations for say, malaria. (Or HIV when they tried that.)

you won’t find many g6pd Deficient people in china, however you will find g6pd adaptations for malaria that we don’t have. so HCQ may work differently in their bodies than it does ours. a study that says “HCQ did something a certain way in their bodies” doesn’t mean it will mine.

G6PD deficiency - Prevalence of 0.6% - 2.0% nationwide in china depending on who you ask. So may be easy to dish it out and say no one had deadly side effects.

In the USA it’s about 7%, and then in black males it’s 11%. You can’t give out hcq like candy here without testing for g6pd deficiency. Because even if it did “work,” it would be deadlier than Covid for these populations.

amyames··on FTC bans hidden junk fees in hotel, event ticket prices

Having not learned my lesson yet, I went elsewhere and ripped it open to check the expiration date this time before I bought it.

No. This phones keypad , controller, and screen are on a separate board.

This would be like plugging your monitor and keyboard into a new computer.

There are some lorawan handheld communicatiors using surplus blackberry cases and keyboards from blackberries that never were, that they got for pennies.

Except this dude wants to drop in a roll-your-own cellphone board with a basic os, instead of a lorawan radio and basic os. Same idea. But he will have to design this.

Whereas You can get schematics to build a lorawan communicator with blackberry parts, and there are community supported roms for that

amyames··on Attacker Has Techdirt Reclassified as Phishing Site
I had this kind of stuff done repeatedly by a business competitor who kept kneecapping me as viciously as Tonya Harding.

ddos, abuse and dmca complaints (they’d copy my website word for word then dmca it saying mine was an obvious copy of theirs)..

it went on for oh I’d say about 10 years before I was finally , successfully intimidated and run out of business.

and they’re still around, peddling software of mine they plagiarized.

I probably had a good case for slander , tortuous interference or whatever but didn’t know that until it was too late to sue for damages.

meanwhile their own provider, was like “so?”

amyames··on Bankruptcy judge rejects sale of Infowars to The Onion
Just navel gazing here maybe there is case precedent or law here.

The debtor generally deserves their case to be discharged resolved liquidated closed and done forever.

Paying ongoing reparations in royalties or whatever the onion proposes doesn’t accomplish this. Alex Jones himself could convert his case to a chapter 13 and set up a “repayment” plan based on his own anticipated/potential earnings from his own business. It would possibly even be higher, infowars intended audience is probably more profitable than people laughing at infowars on Ben Collins bluesky feed.

The people who got a personal judgment aren’t made whole by a promise of future restitution by someone purchasing his business assets.

What if the onion went bankrupt next year and said oh we’re not going to pay that anymore?

That would be an interesting case to test: a person being relieved from a fraud or criminal tort, as it’s handed off to a third party buying their business, who themselves didn’t commit fraud or a criminal tort and merely became insolvent which is dischargeable.

In the case where the “creditors” own the asset to settle their claim, that’s another story, whether they make $1 or a billion dollars disposing of it is no longer the debtors problem

In the same way that returning my smashed up uninsured car to a secured lender doesn’t make them whole for my discharged loan either.

amyames··on Bankruptcy judge rejects sale of Infowars to The Onion
The trustee gets something like 3% over $1million in liquidated assets.

Call it 52,000 from the onion sale.

well now someone says I could have bought it for 10 million.

trustee now gets $300,000. They’re not going to get in the way.

amyames··on "Hetzner decided to cancel our account and terminate all servers"
aws-cli will sync your s3 buckets to a local system.

I’m doing that to linux, and then the Linux box is furthermore backed up with nakivo.

Not my favorite but the price was okay and I can run the whole director on Linux, unlike all their other competitors. [veeam’s next major release 13 or 14 should do this in the next year or so too.]

While nakivo backs up s3 buckets, NFS shares, and local file servers… to your point, I don’t trust it (or any other backup software I can’t extract and unpack the resulting backup by hand) as far as I can throw it. So I rsync or mirror it to a local Linux box with aws-cli and then back THAT up.

I think you can do all this with windows stuff too but I don’t know it that well

Additionally you can take servers that are linux vps’es and do the reverse: mirror THEIR content to an s3 bucket.

You can also run minio open source/free on your fileserver and set up s3 to s3 sync. Cloudflare for example will ingest and replicate your minio server automatically and you can firewall it all off to their address ranges. It’s not free but it actually prices out favorably compared to veeam and nakivo if that’s all you need backed up.

amyames··on "Hetzner decided to cancel our account and terminate all servers"
For anyone else who needs to hear this,

Hi,

I don’t have a mastodon to reply directly to you.

But i have had some issues with content being taken down by VPS providers as well.

What I’ve found works well is to use a VPS provider that the public is unaware of. And for some time I had used OVH based on the unlimited bandwidth and the reasoning that Wikipedia and Julian assange (who have far more enemies than I ever will) were using OVH.

I don’t know if that’s true any more because I subsequently moved my content to ENS and IPFS.

Anyway regardless of where your content is actually hosted or lives,

What I had done was turn my “real” servers into content origins , which were concealed form the rest of the world and lock it down in the firewall so it could only be reached by disposable squid proxy servers with a 10-liner config file

Then I pointed DNS , cloud flare etc at the squid nodes

And couldn’t care less if they were taken down.

Because I could deploy new ones in minutes elsewhere.

I didn’t have “bad content”, just ruthless business competition that kept coming at me like Tonya Harding.

And I’m sharing because your content didn’t seem too offensive either.

In the front end VPS nodes you’d just put the real address of your content as the remote origin.

And then nobody but you will ever know where it is.

Then generally your hosting company shouldn’t be aware of what it is either unless they’re snooping around in your files, and if they are, hell with them too.

You’re welcome to pass this along as a remark on avoiding censorship, or keep it to yourslelf as proprietary information I don’t mind. Let me know if you want or need an example squid conf. It’s seriously 10 lines at most and many examples found on google.

amyames··on Skype Credit is no longer available
Linphone works good for internal use and is free to other linphone users.

The drawback is that unless you can in a newer version, you must choose between using your free linphone video messenger account OR your external sip account that can do landlines.

Having mentioned both in this thread: my small business is using grandstream phones that receive calls on twilio [because it’s the only one that will ring up to 10 extensions on a single login], and then competitively make outbound on all the others I mentioned based on dialing patterns.

And then we use linphone for internal video, since we’re a Linux shop and teams is out. [it’s wonderful but just exasperating that I can’t configure a second account and use it for everything.]

Linphone otoh will call a proper SIP address for free, eg ourtelephonenumber@twilio or oursipusername@sip.telnyx.com so I can conference in Cisco tandbergs, or I can conference in someone on one of the grandstreams that way. [when linphone is configured as a linphone rather than a SIP phone]

amyames··on Skype Credit is no longer available
Oh I had just plugged callcentric too. The rate tables are here:

https://www.callcentric.com/find/rate/

For North American use they were 0.0198 a minute .

Versus telnyx at 0.005 per minute but wants business registration.

Skype was 2.3 cents a minute and it was never great.

For anyone who had Skype because they didn’t have a voip phone , or know how to set up software: the free “Lin phone” client for Linux Mac windows and mobile can be configured with a SIP provider.

You just type in sip.callcentric.net and your login is the 1777xxxxxx account number. Password is set separately under the extensions tab.

That’s all you need and you can prepay a credit balance like you did with Skype

amyames··on Skype Credit is no longer available
Callcentric is still available for $0.00 a month and pay per minute on outbound. Any destination.

I am utilizing them for$1.99 a month inbound and pay per minute inbound too, though they have unlimited in and out I just don’t use it as much as the monthly fee. Love them.

Frankly better rates on twilio and telnyx for high volume and business use which also allow pay as you go but both now require corporate/business registration, EIN, blah blah both of which I’ve done for business use but were a headache.

There are others like voip.ms which fell in the middle rate wise but also demanded so much documentation or hassle I just said no thank you
