amlozano··on An Almost-Secret Algorithm Researchers Used to Break Thousands of RSA Keys
Modern desktops have had RNGs built into their chips since Ivy Bridge. Beyond that, they have plenty of decent sources for random numbers such as network traffic. Similarly, mobile devices can use sensor noise to create random numbers pretty well.

The devices people are concerned with are things like embedded devices and sometimes virtual devices.

amlozano··on What’s the real reason Costco employees check receipts at the exit?
Sometimes the cashiers forget to hand you movie tickets or the consumer forgets that they need to pick up an item from the electronics cage. Once they caught that I didn't get the movie tickets I had paid for, felt really nice.
amlozano··on Thefuck – Corrects your previous console command
You have to explicitly turn on a setting to have it run the corrected command without confirmation.
amlozano··on Is Every Speed Limit Too Low?
They tried speed cameras with warning signs on the highways in Phoenix, Arizona. They also had mobile vans with automatic cameras to catch people that weren't paying attention. The population mostly refused to pay the tickets and used every legal means available to dispute them, from ignoring the letters until served to fighting the tickets in court. Some people wore masks so the photos couldn't prove they were driving. Others did some shenanigans like registering the car to a cooperation which somehow couldn't get a traffic ticket (not sure that really worked). Still others installed reflective glass that would obscure their license plate when the flash went off (though that was quickly made illegal).

I also believe it came out that the company providing the cameras was getting a cut of every ticket issued, leading to a tendency towards false positives. The program wasn't profitable for the state and people complained so much that the cameras were gone a short time later. I remember most people would slam on the brakes just before the stationary cameras, cruise through at exactly 64 or 74 mph (the cameras went off at 10 mph above the posted limit) and then accelerate to whatever speed they wanted. It was way worse than people just speeding.

Maybe it works well in S. Korea because the incentives aren't so screwed up, but here in the States "Cameras" mean someone is getting a cut and the people are getting screwed. The camera's get set up in the best places to get revenue (downhill when the speed limit changes from 65 mph to 55 mph around a bend so you don't even see the sign before it's too late).

Because despite all the hate, GitLab is still pretty awesome to have.
amlozano··on Why should hard be secure enough? Information and non-invertibility
"...if we have zero information concerning the value of x, than we are also clueless in what concerns the value of, say, x^2"

But that is not true, we have -some- information concerning the value of x, namely that the value of x is equiprobable.

I'd really like to see this study re-done with multiple fine sizes. My intuition is that monetary repercussion is valued smaller than the social repercussion.

There might even be a optimal fine level to make profit off the tardy parents.

Its also pretty pointless when the Mafiaa do manage to get a site taken down new ones crop up almost immediately. What.cd was taken down recently and now has 2 or 3 viable replacements.
amlozano··on HandBrake 1.0.0 Released
The people that go after these sites are more interested in prosecuting the site operators than the users. I think they want to make running a private torrent site such a risky endeavour that no one wants to take the risk. That said the best sites have operators with some experience at avoiding the law.
amlozano··on 'Clean your desk': My Amazon interview experience
This was a huge problem for me at Gatech's online master of computer science program (omscs). I ended up having a small windows partition just to take the exams.

Also note windows 10 isn't explicitly on that list. There were problems early on.

amlozano··on 'Clean your desk': My Amazon interview experience
Yup. You can get a camera that is good enough with a built in mic for like $20 these days.

If you consider the purpose is to monitor the entire computer to see if you have notes pulled up, you can see why they have this requirement.

I thought the entire premise of proctorU and proctorTrack (which gatech is now using instead of proctorU) was ridiculous though. A cheap hdmi splitter and a long cable would be all you needed to pipe the test out to a second monitor in another room where someone could scoop up the whole test for later. Or maybe even feed back answers to some tiny headphones hidden behind the ear. Impossible to detect.

amlozano··on Guide to Remote Work
Having experience with all of them, Discord is the easiest one to get going with. For non-technical people especially.

Having a browser app is a huge boon, you can get people into the chatroom without them having to download anything. Having the phone apps is also amazing, keep up with the room even when you are on the go.

amlozano··on What Sid Meier’s Video Game Empire Got Right and Wrong About ‘Civilization’
Slavery isn't absent in civ 5, its just abstracted away.
amlozano··on What Sid Meier’s Video Game Empire Got Right and Wrong About ‘Civilization’
Not quite. In civ 5. If your happiness gets pretty bad you cities will start spawning rebel units. Revolts can happen and entire cities might even switch sides to a different civ with a preferred ideology. Its pretty rare for a human player to have to deal with that though.

amlozano··on Microsoft Surface Studio
It is all birthed from the desire of software engineers who play dungeons and dragons and want a programmable gaming table.

When I interviewed at Microsoft I played with one of those tables, and there was definitely a dice roller app.

No lie I would love to own one of those tables.
