>What happens next? More importantly, what should happen?

>So, we punish Ann for moving by reducing her salary?

I don't see a problem with reducing Ann's pay. If rent is only $300 instead of $3000 the pay should reflect that.

If that sounds like a problem, imagine that the company pays rent or for hotel stay for visiting employees. If hotels cost $400 a night in SV and $40 a night in Argentina, should the company pay $400 a night in Argentina in order to 'equalize the pay'?

> The wealthiest 1% of Americans alone pay 50% of the federal income tax. The bottom 80% pay only 15%.

You're confusing wealth with income.

amlgsmsn··on Fix Windows 10
>I'm not a big fan of google or Apple and I don't think the fact that other big companies rape your privacy justifies Microsoft raping your privacy.

I agree with you. I just find it curious why tech forums like this one and others appear to go gung-ho whenever something negative is mentioned about MS/Windows but same or worse privacy violations by other companies in software that is very widely used don't seem to trigger the same reaction.

I hope they start with Android and Google Maps on iOS where Google tracks which stores you visit when you have your phone with you.

http://9to5google.com/2013/11/11/google-tracking-your-store-...

If you disable it, Google Now stops working.

Or with Chromebooks, where everything is forced to be stored in Google's cloud with very paltry storage like 32GB and 64GB even in high end Pixels.

I somehow don't see the outrage on HN about things like physical store visits being tracked by default on Android devices.

And don't some of the same companies store all their company documents, email etc. on Google Apps? Or on Dropbox?
amlgsmsn··on Test versions of IE from 6 through 11 and Microsoft Edge using virtual machines
I think a good of that is because of backward compatibility and drivers.
amlgsmsn··on Google Hangouts
What is this post about? This is what I get on clicking the "article" link with the latest version of Opera:

>It appears as if you’re using an old or uncommon browser that doesn’t support common standards.

>To access Hangouts, upgrade to the latest version of any of the following browsers:

>Download Chrome >Download Firefox >Download Internet Explorer

Web standards, they said.

amlgsmsn··on The FCC could soon give more power to cable companies
The cable companies won't do itemizing since they make money off people that don't watch channels they don't watch.

Also if you look at the graph in the article, the broadcasting portion of the cable bill is relatively small.

You mean AOSP, Android has a completely different meaning and expectations in general use.

Apart from apps that need the Play Services, lack of the Play Store is the biggest issue with shipping AOSP. That's why they forcibly bundle it with all other Google apps and default as Google search.

What about rules like the below on Android? (or Chromebooks where you cannot even install alternative native applications)

> Devices may only be distributed if all Google Applications [listed elsewhere in the agreement] ... are pre-installed on the Device."

>The phone manufacturer must "preload all Google Applications approved in the applicable Territory ... on each device."

>The phone manufacturer must place "Google's Search and the Android Market Client icon [Google Play] ... at least on the panel immediately adjacent to the Default Home Screen," with "all other Google Applications ... no more than one level below the Phone Top."

>The phone manufacturer must set "Google Search ... as the default search provider for all Web search access points."

>If device owners hold down the physical “Home” button or “swipe up” from a digital home button or navigation bar, such actions should trigger Google Search.

>must provide access to a “collection” of 13 Google apps (Google Chrome, Google Maps, Google Drive, YouTube, Gmail, Google+, Google Play Music, Google Play Movies, Google Play Books, Google Play Newsstand, Google Play Games, Google+ Photos and Google+ Hangouts).

How is that not "rammed down your throat" ?

Or do you really think Android users are "voluntarily installing" Google Play Newsstand?

>updates hadn't installed automatically because Windows Update was too busy advertising Windows 10

That does not make much sense, if any.

>We could look back in 5 years and see the majority using Bing (via the Start Menu), Cortana, IE, OneDrive, and syncing all their devices through MS servers and cringe

And you aren't cringing at Google Now/Google Drive/Chrome? Why?

I don't see how making up lies is a good thing, unless one is pushing an agenda.

Reminds me of the DRM FUD against Windows 7[1] and the fake benchmarks claiming that Windows 7 was eating up memory and was slow[2].

And they end up getting a lot of attention and page hits from sites like this, so it's a vicious cycle, with people repeating this 'information' to others.

amlgsmsn··on Firefox sticks it to Microsoft, redirects Bing searches in Cortana to Yahoo
What if I want my Firefox searches to go to Yahoo, but I am okay with my Cortana searches going to Bing?
amlgsmsn··on Firefox sticks it to Microsoft, redirects Bing searches in Cortana to Yahoo
I don't understand, Cortana does not redirect Firefox searches to Bing. It doesn't touch them at all.
amlgsmsn··on Firefox sticks it to Microsoft, redirects Bing searches in Cortana to Yahoo
>It looks like Microsoft was the one intercepting searches

I don't get it. How?

amlgsmsn··on Firefox sticks it to Microsoft, redirects Bing searches in Cortana to Yahoo
So, an application on the system tells the default browser on the system to open a link, the browser sees that the request is to a search engine and then strips out the search term and then feeds it to a different search engine that pays it for doing that.

Am I getting this right?
