amix··on Pinboard Turns Seven
As a long term Pinboard customer I dislike this "I am doing nothing and I am proud of it" mentality and I will unsubscribe.

Pinboard has been the same for years and I feel little attachment to the product.

I am unsure what to switch to, but Pinterest looks like an interesing and innovative solution.

amix··on Another successful DAO attack recursive split
The major problem of Solidity (Ethereum’s language) is the Turning completeness. This makes it incredibly hard to reason about any property of the contracts (since everything is undecidable due to Rice’s theorem).

I don’t know why they didn’t reduce the computing power, so it becomes much easier to reason and automate the reasoning about contracts.

Do they really need Turing completeness?

This could be one of the better things about Bitcoin's blockchain: it's simpler and easier to reason about.

amix··on Reported Bitcoin 'founder' Craig Wright's home raided by Australian police
The person(s) who leaked the documents to the media, could also have leaked them to the Australian authorities.
amix··on Reported Bitcoin 'founder' Craig Wright's home raided by Australian police
The bitcoins that Satoshi Nakamoto own are worth about ~400 million USD. There are also a ton of coins missing from Mt. Gox and Silkroad. Maybe it’s all related somehow? Anyhow, it's clear why the authorities would be interested: potentially there are hundreds of millions of USD on the line.

This said, this is horrible for Craig Wright if he is innocent...

amix··on 21.co Bitcoin Computer Now on Sale
I fail to see why embedding bitcoin inside hardware is a smart idea, especially given that most of the world are moving towards mobile devices where battery life and storage are super important.

I can see this would make payments more decentralized, but how much do regular users or developers care about decentralized systems? Most of the world depends on highly centralized systems, including the decentralized protocols such as email or the Internet itself.

amix··on Twitter Expected to Begin Layoffs and Stop Headquarters Expansion
I am an active user of WhatsApp and their service is much more reliable than Skype or Hangouts. There's a reason why 800 million people are using it and it's not only because of network effects, it's because the base product and service is rock solid.

Their innovation is evolution of WhatsApp past text messages. And in the end, nothing is a true innovation -- most things build on past ideas.

amix··on Twitter Expected to Begin Layoffs and Stop Headquarters Expansion
I think the general market could learn a thing or two from WhatsApp: 55 people powering a platform used by 800 million _active_ users across many different platforms. And WhatsApp has innovated, e.g. the new video and calling system works very well.

I have often wondered what thousands of Twitter employees are doing all day long? Their platform and apps have been stale for a long time.

amix··on SpaceX – Launch Vehicle Failure
My thoughts go out to the SpaceX team. Must be devastating to see your hard work blow up :-(
amix··on Europe Is Struggling to Foster a Startup Culture
The major problem is that some of the best Europeans leave to US to start or join startup companies (e.g. Stripe). And if you look at the best US companies you will typically see a large amounts of Europeans in them. So Europeans are very capable of starting and joining startups - they just don't do it in Europe.

What Europe needs is a better way to keep the talent at home.

amix··on Germanwings Tragedy: How to protect against mentally ill pilots?
I think this could be prevented by removing humans from the cockpit and let computers take over. Computers are already controlling most of the things inside an airplane. If this isn't possible, then the flight software should at least have protection against malicious pilots (this would protect against the mentally ill and also against terrorism (e.g. 9/11)). Basically, the planes could have failsafes to prevent malicious pilots from crashing them down or crashing them into things.
amix··on Do elite software developers exist?
Elite accountants usually get promoted into CFO positions, where they are very important and get a huge paycheck. There is a huge difference between a good and an amazing CFO.

I think 10X people exist in any area, including accounting and programming. E.g. John Carmack, Linus Torvalds, Poul-Henning Kamp. Some top accountants can be found by looking at CFO positions of huge companies.

These people are very rare tho' and most of us have probably not worked with a 10X person. Just like most of us have not played football with a "Ronaldo-level" player.

amix··on How to Start a Startup: Fall 2014
The list of speakers looks fantastic! This said, I think the list lacks diversity. I think it would be great to have someone outside of SV in it (e.g. Jason Fried, Jeff Bezos etc.) One of the better Startup School talks I seen was from DHH (that presented another way of building a successful company).
amix··on Efficient way to calculate active users
There is a better way to do this by using bitmaps (especially bitmaps in Redis). I recommend looking at https://github.com/Doist/bitmapist
amix··on LibreSSL – An OpenSSL replacement
This presentation is tasteless and totally takes any seriousness that should be related to making and promoting an OpenSSL replacement. I personally can't take it seriously and I would recommend hackers to think about what image their presentation and design conveys.

I can recommend this article that explains OT really well: http://www.codecommit.com/blog/java/understanding-and-applyi...
amix··on Build your own Google Docs with GoInstant's new OT API
Are there any great open-source implementations of OT? Last time I looked there were some, but the quality and popularity of them was questionable.
amix··on The Rise and Fall of Professional Bowling
Professional snooker is still very popular and the best earn millions of USD pr. year. So the situation between snooker and bowling isn't quite the same.
amix··on BladeRunnerJS: Divide and conquer complex web apps
I am evaluating it on design and I think the design looks more like a Java codebase than a JavaScript one. I don't think this is a positive thing since you should not try to emulate Java idioms in JavaScript (or vice-versa).

A small example is usage of XML files for configuration of aliases. Very few people use XML files in the JavaScript world - - while it's almost a standard for Java projects.

In general, the more I look at the codebase the more messy it looks like. They could have built something much simpler that solves the same problem.

amix··on BladeRunnerJS: Divide and conquer complex web apps
I like the general idea of this project. I think tho' it smells like a enterprisey Java project that's coded in JavaScript (at least by looking at the code and how things are structured).
amix··on Julie Ann Horvath Describes Sexism and Intimidation Behind Her GitHub Exit
Allegation that a wife of a founder can read private chats at GitHub makes me question GitHub's privacy and security... I would love if we would have a statement of GitHub on this matter since it would be a huge privacy breach (and something that would make us move all of our private repos outside of GitHub). (posted this as a comment on the article as well)
amix··on Sane Concurrency with Go
I don't really think what I suggest goes against the article you link to. It basically says: use channels when appropriate, but sometimes the best approach is to use locks.

E.g. An bank account is shared state (similar to a reference count) and the best approach is to put a mutex around it instead of fighting with channel synchronization.

amix··on Sane Concurrency with Go
I was also thinking this while reading this (and I am very new to Go). Here's how I would write this in Go: https://gist.github.com/amix/9517995

I think this is the idiomatic way to implement this. It will lock the account every time you try to deposit to it (so other goroutines can't do it).

amix··on Malaysia Airlines Says It Lost Contact With Plane Carrying Over 200
Each day about ~100.000 people lose their life in road accidents...
amix··on Malaysia Airlines Says It Lost Contact With Plane Carrying Over 200
This is sad, but kind of strange with all the fear and media publicity of an airplane crash. For example, 1.2million people lost their life in road traffic in 2010 alone... We rarely read or fear about this fact.
