amir734jj··on Ask HN: If you quit your computer job, which non-computer craft would you pick
- Teaching CS and research

- gardening

- assembling lego for Legoland

amir734jj··on Google tells staff it plans to limit publishing AI research
One benefit of publishing that this will diminish is cross examination and validation. Good luck living in your own bubble.
amir734jj··on Googlers angry about CEO’s $226M pay after cuts in perks and 12,000 layoffs
Is $225M a lot for CEO of big corporation? I genuinely don't know. What is the average pay?
amir734jj··on EdgeDB – A graph-relational database built on top of Postgres
I think this is awesome. This is like higher level and more readable + hopefully more efficient version of SQL.

BTW: In the nested-filters example, I don't understand how actor's `name` is being returned as `actor_name`. Where is `AS actor_name` being specified in EdgeDB's query?

amir734jj··on Angular v16
Angular + Nest.js = Awesomeness! developer's dream
amir734jj··on Top US CEO pay rose 7.7% last year, outpacing inflation, study finds
Actually CEOs or VPs get something called golden parachute when they leave a company. That is usually a lot of money.
amir734jj··on Building a Compiler with Multi-Level Intermediate Representation (MLIR) (2020) [pdf]
What is the difference between MLIR and LLVM IR code that we used to?

amir734jj··on Ask HN: Is "At which age did you start coding?” a good data point for hiring?
30M. Started in middle school with BASIC. Being an introvert really helps too. I had no close friend, computer was more or less my childhood friend growing up.
amir734jj··on Live Starlink Satellite and Coverage Map
I didn't like the company culture but loved the engineering behind the scene. Awesome company.
amir734jj··on Live Starlink Satellite and Coverage Map
I did something similar for my SpaceX interview:

amir734jj··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
IceCast stream ripper website. Listen, download mp3 from online radio stations.

amir734jj··on Linen.dev: A 500 kb Slack alternative
I don't understand. Is this just the frontend or backend?
amir734jj··on Starbucks claims $181M in revenue from unused gift cards (2022)
Because the credit we load into account "expires". That's the trick they use to make money.
amir734jj··on Gradle still sucks
I'm not a Java guy, but Maven is much easier to learn but I have found some people in Java world religiously love Gradle. I don't know what is it with jvm language build tools ... Ehem sbt.
amir734jj··on GCC 13 and the State of Gccrs
I would imagine this is a massive effort. Rust is not a simple language
amir734jj··on Google CEO Salary
I don't think CEOs of software companies should be programming experts. It sounds cliche but I think what is missing with him is he is not visionary. Follower and not a leader.
amir734jj··on How Kubernetes and Kafka Will Get You Fired
Use docker compose or portainer
amir734jj··on Heroku has been running a second copy of my scheduler instance
Heroku really helped me get started. I then stated experimenting with running docker compose locally and finally was able to run my own kubernetes. You don't need Heroku as you progress. It takes time. Be patient.
amir734jj··on Ask HN: Tell me about how you bombed a technical interview
Google. I literally lost my voice and could barely understand the Chinese interviewer's accent. All my interviewers that day had an accent. Little did I know I had COVID. I failed the interview and had to take some time off to recover emotionally because it was a difficult interview.

Also failed at Amazon because they brought me for an interview and it started 9am and ended at 5pm. I was too tired and they kept trying to make simple question harder by adding constraints. I gave up because it wasn't worth it.

Do yourself a favor, if you don't like the interview and interviewer just leave in the middle of the interview. It's not worth the emotional and mental cost. Also there is a good chance you don't like the company and the company culture if the interview is not going accordingly.

amir734jj··on System76 Open Firmware
The same. I had a great experience with them + PopOS is great.
amir734jj··on System76 Open Firmware
So this means I should buy my next laptop from this list if I want a proper Linux support.
amir734jj··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Agreed. I loved my Coporate MacBook pro. It was durable and battery lasted long. But it costed about $3k and I can't afford it. Instead, I bought a System 76 ($1200) + Desktop PC I built myself ($600). I am not a gamer. I only do programming and you don't need a fancy hardware to run vim.
amir734jj··on Saying Goodbye to GitHub
+1 for Forgejo
amir734jj··on Postgres as a graph database
Good example. Now do it with undirected graph. How will the query look like?

So, is this basically running transitive closure on the database during query? it would be expensive.

amir734jj··on Kubernetes is hard
I would not use k8s unless we are convinced it will benefit us in the long run (think about constant effort that needs to put in to get things running). k8s is not magic. I would just stick with docker-compose or digital ocean for small startup. OR rent a VM on Azure OR if you really really need k8s use a managed k8s.
amir734jj··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
Is there a script for windows 11 that disables all these ads and news and gives us no bs experience of windows 7?
amir734jj··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
Switched to PopOS 4 years ago before that was using Ubuntu. Haven't found a need to use windows ever since. Do yourself a favor and switch.
amir734jj··on U.S. home prices are the most unaffordable they've been in nearly 100 years
We the HN community are engineers, how can we find a solution to fix this? My thinking is we need a portal to advertise affordable housing or starter homes. Housing is the basis of the family.
amir734jj··on Counter-Strike 2 Is Announced
Looks great. I have a lot of great memories playing CS 1.6.
