amelius··on FTC is investigating OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies over product risks
They should be investigating them because of massively selling below cost price.

How is this a fair, level, playing field, U.S.? Making a large pile of money to put millions of people out of a job, it warrants some investigations!

amelius··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
The AI companies will sell those products to us. Locked down and all.
amelius··on Adding Floating-Point Decimals for Fun and Profit
But the rounding errors are way down in the nano-cents. Not worrying about them is cheaper!

amelius··on Adding Floating-Point Decimals for Fun and Profit
> Many people know that you shouldn’t do decimal calculations, such as those involving U.S. dollars and cents, with the floating-point numbers in most programming languages. This is because decimal numbers can’t be expressed exactly as such floating-point numbers, so you will encounter rounding errors.

Why not, rounding to the nearest cent is going to be much less precise for any realistic amount of dollars when using 64 bit floats (the type of float Javascript uses in every browser).

amelius··on GPT-Synopsys: Frontier Intelligence to Revolutionize Chip Design
Give us more open source EDA tools, not more hyped up EDA vendors.
amelius··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
The real reason is of course that the Spaniards took all the jobs of the Aztecs.

Smell is most important for most people ...

Maybe you could get a proxy for that using DNA?

amelius··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
Commoditizing their complement. Makes sense.

> So the Chinese labs have thrown a lifeline to the Western loss-making labs, and I just have no clue as to why.

Any ideas?

amelius··on I can't tell who's teaching who anymore
It should be simple to fit a style-filter onto an LLM. Curious why we still don't have that, and why everybody is using the default.
amelius··on Upgrade your desktop: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS is now available
If you are on nvidia Jetson, Ubuntu is basically a necessity.

What's with the ".04" in the version numbers?

amelius··on GPT-6.1 Sol replaces GPT-6 Sol after just 7 days, with near-Astra intelligence
I suppose it's the reverse of Amara's law:

"We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run"

amelius··on Show HN: Dental Scope – Interactive 3D dental anatomy
That's great. It reminds me of Elsevier's full-body anatomy tool which is very cool but requires a license of like $60 dollars per year (probably targeted at doctors and medical students). I hope someone can replicate the essence of it and make such a tool available for free.

This could be a part of Wikipedia.

amelius··on Memory Companies Have Destroyed the Consumer Market
Which is weird because how is "making a pile of money of billions of dollars to put millions of people out of a job" not worth an antitrust case?
amelius··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
"The effects of a new technology are overestimated in the short term and underestimated in the long run"
amelius··on America.gov
This is DoGE style optimization of government customer service.

The difference you see here is not important. It's like needing support and being forced to go to the chatbox in the bottom right of your screen versus being forced to visit a URL.

amelius··on America.gov
This is just the annoying AI Chat Robot you see on websites, but now for the government.
amelius··on Memory Companies Have Destroyed the Consumer Market
The main tool to fix this is to forbid companies to sell below cost price. It is part of antitrust law.
amelius··on Memory Companies Have Destroyed the Consumer Market
> How should the memory companies have acted differently?

Well if your thesis is that they should have acted differently, then we should blame the laissez-faire capitalists.

amelius··on GPT 6.1 Sol
Because it is more work?
amelius··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
No because then I'll go to the competition.
