amcoastal··on The reMarkable as a notebook and eBook reader
Can you elaborate why? I'm stuck between the two as a purchasing decision. I value the android apps but if the writing and reading experience is way low I may skip out on boox
amcoastal··on TheNFTbay.org – The Billion Dollar Torrent (All NFT's from Ethereum and Solana)
You wouldn't steal a car would you?
amcoastal··on Drunken-Driving Warning Systems Would Be Required for New Cars Under U.S. Bill
I stopped myself from commenting so many times, but I just can't help myself. This is the dumbest fucking point of view. Do you think people who voluntarily install equipment to stop them from driving drunk are the people that need it? Your stupid ass ideology is harming your ability to view the world practically. Clearly people who drive drunk are the ones who need this installed, and they wouldn't do it voluntarily.

Now, I think cameras in our cars is something I hate and will fight against for other reasons, but your whole "do it yourself before mandating others" is a bad faith argument that makes no sense and is only used to distract from practical solutions in many areas.

amcoastal··on Would You Manage 70 Children and a 15-Ton Vehicle for $18 an Hour?
This stuff is just insane. Just pay them more. I don't get it. We keep pouring money into "education" where does it go?
amcoastal··on The illustrated guide to a Ph.D. (2010)
Incorrect. Branches subservient to the master were called slave by many, a simple look around GitHub would show this was true. I challenge you to find the "slave" part of a master's degree (except TAing ;) )
amcoastal··on The illustrated guide to a Ph.D. (2010)
I think master is less offensive in this context since it's not also coupled with something called 'slave'.
amcoastal··on DJI Mavic 3 Drone
You're getting downvoted because your complaint makes it seem like this is a problem with the particular model. 23 minutes is probably even above average for drone flight times. Don't be so kneejerk negative.
amcoastal··on California tries to close the gap in math, but sets off a backlash
Nope. You can choose classes within your school, but if you go to a shitty school you're out of luck. This is why initiatives like this are so important. And comments like the original one that started this thread are ignorant at best, and when made into a political viewpoint, oppressive.
amcoastal··on Top officers of a Navy nuclear sub have lost their jobs over undersea collision
I'd be interested to see a more thorough report. This seamount wasn't mapped, we might be firing people for no good reason to save face. Or maybe the officers were drinking whiskey and playing quarters. It's sad I don't have enough confidence in the military justice system to assume it's a situation like the latter instead of the former.
amcoastal··on California tries to close the gap in math, but sets off a backlash
I'll just continue to disagree, I guess. I was able to learn algebra just fine even though I didn't know my multiplication tables, while the rest of the class spent a year memorizing them. Our methods of deciding when someone "knows" something so they can "pass" needs to be radically rethought. We spend all our time practicing how to integrate by parts when in reality a computer will do that for you, and youre needed for higher level thinking and abstractions that the math classes don't bother to get to until graduate school. Sad imo.
amcoastal··on California tries to close the gap in math, but sets off a backlash
Sure, but you don't need to spend 32 weeks learning 10 different ways to do integrals which is what our calculuses classes would teach. Learn the concepts of derivatives and integrals and then move on to the actually interesting stuff you just mentioned here.
amcoastal··on California tries to close the gap in math, but sets off a backlash
Huge agreement. Calculus is one branch on the tree of mathematics and one of the more useless ones in modern society (that can be taught to HS students).
amcoastal··on California tries to close the gap in math, but sets off a backlash
I'm going to guess you just have no idea how schooling works in the US. Otherwise I'd be super interested in your theory that the poorest parents are spending resources to take their kids out of their way to shittier schools.
amcoastal··on Chinese athlete accuses former top Communist Party official of sexual assault
How did you type this entire comment and not realize that mansplaining and manspreading are two different things?
amcoastal··on If Silence Is the Cost of Great Ramen, So Be It
>but the statistics now show it is as safe as it was pre-pandemic to return to our regular lives. Why are people insisting on escalating restrictions further?

Probably because the statistics don't say that at all.

amcoastal··on It's hard to overstate what a scam academic and scientific publishing is
Just got some peer reviews back on a paper I submitted today --- 2 of the 3 were nonsense and clearly barely read the paper. My faith in peer review falls year over year every time I go through this process. Hard to blame the anti-intellectual crowd after seeing how bullshit the process is 1st hand.
amcoastal··on Skimpflation: A reason inflation is worse than the government says it is
Maybe shop somewhere other than Whole Foods and Premium Gas R Us
amcoastal··on Skimpflation: A reason inflation is worse than the government says it is
What's it like falling for literally fake news? If those charts don't set off your bullshit detector... Well... You should probably stop trusting yourself on many things.
amcoastal··on The Patriot Act Has Threatened Freedom for 20 Years
Plenty of other people have responded to this comment, I don't have much to add except that you're literally the first person I've ever heard even suggest this.
amcoastal··on The Roll-Out of Windows 11 Is the Perfect Time to Decide to Switch to Linux
Powertoys for Windows is an excellent tiling manager.
amcoastal··on “Dune” (The Movie), Annotated
There's plenty of exposition in Dune. I never used the glossary once. People familiar with fantasy and SciFi have no problems absorbing weird names and such at face value with the idea that context will be added as exposition continues. Looking up each term you don't know in the glossary is actually the wrong way to read these types of books. Youll be presented with information that you shouldn't know yet.
amcoastal··on CNN goes first two weeks of October without any program reaching 1M viewers
Implying CNN is as disreputable as the other sites mentioned is ridiculous and you know it.
amcoastal··on Long Beach has temporarily suspended container stacking limitations
Its a comment on hackernews. Reciting recent research on a topic is a top tier internet comment. You can't really expect much more nowadays.
amcoastal··on Why Mathematics is Boring (2007) [pdf]
I'll disagree. I read many papers with mathematics in them, and I get a lot of the concepts but the symbology used doesn't make sense to me so its hard for me to understand what is exactly going on. The sentence after the equation that explains each symbol is necessary for me, and many others as well. Not everyone has taken 8 math classes to know each kroniger delta by heart.
amcoastal··on New Zealand council ends contract with wizard after 23 years of service
Have you thought this through at all? There are so many instances of local governments paying single artists for their art that isn't a problem. Have you walked around a city and enjoyed murals or art installations? Do you see those and your hair stands up on your neck worrying about the bidding process for those pieces? Why do you not want people to have nice things.
amcoastal··on Wavelets allow researchers to transform and understand data
Wavelets have also been used in the physical sciences. Here they are used to translate sea surface patterns into water depths: https://www.mdpi.com/2077-1312/8/10/772
amcoastal··on New York City to end kids gifted and talented program critics call racist
This article doesn't really see to communicate what the changes are very well, and neither does the title. After reading the article it seems they are moving to a model where kids are placed into accelerated learning based on schoolwork and teacher input instead of using a test administered to kindergartneners. How effective this will be versus the other system will depend on details not mentioned in this article. Shame on the title here for just flinging culture war shit.
amcoastal··on Ask HN: Non-tech professionals on HN?
It took me 9 years to get my UG degree done. You'll get there, don't give up :)
amcoastal··on Ask HN: Non-tech professionals on HN?
I'm a physical science researcher on coastal processes, with particular interests in using ML to solve inversion and flow problems that cannot be sufficiently modeled with linear algorithms.

I honestly can't remember how I found hackernews.

amcoastal··on Ask HN: Non-tech professionals on HN?
If it's an undergraduate degree just get it done, you can do all kinds of things with a civil engineering undergraduate degree. It seems you might imply you picked your major when you were young and had no idea what you actually wanted. The same thing happened to me, and from the UG student perspective it seems like your degree type will define you, but reality is with something as broad as civil it won't. You could get into graduate schools for basically whatever you'd want to do. From marine science to graphical design to creative writing, and of course engineering.
