We wrote about the process it takes to add a language here: https://blog.repl.it/elisp
But also, since we announced `.replit` which allows you to configure the run button you can pretty much build your own environment without waiting for us to support it natively: https://docs.repl.it/repls/dot-replit
What are you looking to add?
Here is the same program with no line numbers: https://repl.it/@paulgraham/repeat-nolines
The IDE is built on top of a window-tiling manager abstraction we built in React.js: https://blog.repl.it/ide
Now, as for languages, most of them do run inside the container, which is built from our base image polygott (https://github.com/replit/polygott). However, a select-few are better suited to run on the client. We have a client-side jail called: replbox (https://github.com/replit/replbox). Basic, for example, runs on replbox because I wanted to graphics to be instant. For something like PyGame or LOVE frameworks we had to go with VNC streaming but that's not ideal for obvious network reasons.
There is a lot more to it -- it sometimes feels like building an entire city -- and you can find some more posts on our blog: https://blog.repl.it/ (which incidentally is hosted on Repl.it).
Try it here: https://repl.it/l/basic

However, we realized that we can do a much better job on syntax and other features. So in collaboration with PG, we're evolving the language to make it more expressive and cleaner without losing the magic that makes Basic a great introductory programming language.
That's why I find a lot of the antinatalism of modern western culture to be concerning.
I don't know where you get this from but as far as VC goes a16z are especially willing to take long-term bets. Case in point, when we pitched them, we explicitly said it's going to take us a decade to achieve our goals and they were okay with that.
RIP John Conway.

We continue to test with kids and they intuitively get it with little instructions. If you want to make the environment even simpler just add "?lite=1" to the url and it will look like this: https://answer-on-hn.amasad.repl.co/lite.png
Repl.it is the first massively open computing platform where anyone, even without even needing an account, can hop on and in seconds start executing code, build and host applications and websites, and collaborate with other people.
Providing a service like this is challenging from all a scaling, security, and billing perspectives. Also, supporting the number of languages we do (https://repl.it/languages) is a hard tooling problem -- we have to build generic protocols for executing, debugging, authoring code, running tests, handling files, etc. Finally, it's an incredibly challenging frontend/design problem to build a fast collaborative in-browser IDE that's both powerful and simple.
It's a great time to be joining us, we're still 9 full-time people, we reach millions of coders a month, and we're backed by YC and a16z.

Despite what they say, McDonald's patties are a 100% beef and they're relatively good quality.

> the total positive rate of RT-PCR for throat swab samples was reported to be about 30% to 60% at initial presentation [1]
> In patients with negative RT-PCR results, 75% (308/413) had positive chest CT findings; of 308, 48% were considered as highly likely cases, with 33% as probable cases [2]
> For patients with negative RT-PCR tests, more than 70% had typical CT manifestations. On the one hand, due to the overlap of CT imaging features between COVID-19 and other viral pneumonia, false-positive cases of COVID-19 can be identified on chest CT. Nevertheless, considering the rapidly spreading epidemic of COVID-19, the priority was to identify any suspicious CT case in order to isolate the patients and administer appropriate treatment [3]
> Conclusions: In the close contacts of COVID-19 patients, nearly half or even more of the 'asymptomatic infected individuals' reported in the active nucleic acid test screening might be false positives [4]

We're able to fix typos and bugs and have it live-deployed as it's serving traffic. I recorded a gif here of what it looks like from the inside: https://twitter.com/amasad/status/1235742525056380929
Where is the fabled "hackernews hug of death" if a tiny container can handle the traffic? :-)
