amalgamated_inc··on The Trillion-Dollar Question: Could a Coin Save the Day?
Of course it would solve nothing. Putting more 0s on the money doesn't change it's value. This is so obvious only an academic could deny it.

There's no such thing as a free lunch. But the make belief fairy "lalala I can't hear you" faction in Congress would be really pissed off if somebody made them understand this obvious truth.

amalgamated_inc··on Erlang: The coding language that finance forgot (2022)
Oh, are all the paren/bracket types interchangeable in Perl? I've never used Perl.

Yea, each set of them ([], (), {}, <>) has a very distinct meaning in Elixir.

amalgamated_inc··on Erlang: The coding language that finance forgot (2022)
I, in fact, use Elixir serverless: I just send functions to my BEAM and it runs them for me.
amalgamated_inc··on Erlang: The coding language that finance forgot (2022)
Elixir doesn't have blocks as a separate concept like Ruby. The "blocks" are just syntax sugar for passing keyword lists of code to macros.

What do you mean by "symbolic significance for brackets?"

amalgamated_inc··on Erlang: The coding language that finance forgot (2022)
In fact, it sounds awesome!
amalgamated_inc··on Erlang: The coding language that finance forgot (2022)
While the BEAM is the real magic, the languages (Erlang and later Elixir) are designed specifically to enable that. You can't just decouple the two.
amalgamated_inc··on Once and for All: Are Cast Iron Skillets Worth the Trouble?
IMO no. Carbon steel pans offer the exact same benefits and are much lighter, easier to handle, and easier to clean.

Still, I even moved away from that. In making a great steak the pan is a factor, but much larger factors are quality of meat and how long you've dried the steak. A great steak dried for 5 days in the fridge is consistently much better for me than the same steak dried only 2-3 days, but seared in a cast iron/carbon steel pan.

If you like 'em, use 'em. But you're not missing anything if you don't use cast irons.

Omg this is genius! Does Jerome Powell know about this?!

amalgamated_inc··on Coffee does not give you energy, it just borrows what you will pay for later
Duh, the trick is to never stop drinking coffee and thus never having to pay back the energy plus interest. Everybody knows that.
amalgamated_inc··on Why not a balanced-budget amendment for Washington?
> consensus among economists is that deficit spending is beneficial at least some of the time, especially during recessionary periods

hahahahahaha

sorry

so cute

you think they will give up this power to benefit themselves and their cronies after the recession is over? :D

The reason this doesn't exist is because they're corrupt, obviously. If you argue with economics, you've already lost against people who have no interest in learning the truth.

Chevy Malibu starts at $25k, that's 2 or 3 classes bigger and nicer of a vehicle.

I mean then you're at "everything exemption" pretty quickly. Shelter is the biggest cost for many people by far, often 30% or more. If you add all health, car payments, and maybe food, you're at what, 80%?

I'm all for it just saying :)

Do you work for Big Unreliable Energy & Big Luxury Only Unaffordable EV?

amalgamated_inc··on New York City will require Uber and Lyft to go 100 percent electric by 2030
Certainly come a long way. When I first drove one, we struggled to make 100mi.

These could be enough for most ride sharing services, yea. We'll see, I haven't seen one used as an Uber. No Leafs, either.

amalgamated_inc··on Consumption Taxes
Unfortunately, no exemption for rent :( And health care is only the insurance payment or if you have an FSA/HSA.

Those are 2 of the oldest EVs, that's why I said "modern." These don't have great range and charge very slowly. I think they've both been updated a bit, so I hope they at least support modern DC fast charging now.

Looks like the LEAF still uses CHAdeMO, which is being phased out AFAIK. But its battery is so small that it still seems to give somewhat adequate charge times (45min to 80%).

The Bolt seems similar: slow charging system but tiny battery, which might be OK in city ride sharing use. And not sure anyone cares much for the size of an Uber, so might be fine? It's not like those old Priuses are amazingly comfortable or roomy or anything.

No such thing as unlimited exponential growth in the real world.

I do see a lot of Model 3s, that's true. One time I got 3 3s in a single day :) Drivers seem to generally like it, although 2 of the 3 had put up sun shades from the insides because the glass roof was heating the car up too much.

The Model 3 as shown on the website starts around $45k even after the recent price drops. That's a lot of money over a Prius to get back in fuel, and given how efficient light hybrids already are (the Model 3 weighs 600lbs more than the Prius, probably largely due to its batteries) I'm not sure there's much more in terms of fuel efficiency you can get.

Especially because the market clearing price for ride share cars doesn't seem to be new Priuses (Priae?), but those that only cost $5-10k used.

I have my doubts that EVs will ever get that cheap, old Teslas certainly don't seem to be currently.

amalgamated_inc··on New York City will require Uber and Lyft to go 100 percent electric by 2030
Given that batteries make up a large fraction of new EV prices, I'm not sure that helps the economics.
amalgamated_inc··on New York City will require Uber and Lyft to go 100 percent electric by 2030
We'll see if there's enough availability of economical EVs by then. Plus the charging infrastructure.

Is there currently an EV that would be economical to operate as an Uber/Lyft/taxi? The Prius, very popular with drivers, seems to sell for MSRP $28k, and pretty much all the Ubers I get are 100k miles or more. I don't think there's a modern EV that sells for much below $40k? And certainly there is no used market with lots of reliable 100k mile vehicles yet.

For comparison, the last Uber driver I talked to had bought his Prius for $5k or so at 155k miles, and had since put 80k miles on it. The bulk of the ride sharing fleet seems to hover around this level. If EVs ever get that cheap (and I'm not sure they will), I doubt it'll be in 7 years.
