amacneil··on Robot treats 500k plants per hour with 95% less chemicals [video]
It's a common misconception that you need a ML or robotics PhD to work in the field. There are plenty of frontend & backend web engineering, data engineering, and infrastructure/devops roles available at robotics companies - you don't need to be a domain expert.

For example, at Foxglove[0] we are building open source web-based visualization and data management for robotics (shameless plug: currently hiring).

amacneil··on Ask HN: Ads triggered by WhatsApp “end to end encrypted” messages?
You are right, I should have said they WhatsApp messages are “not e2e encrypted by default”.

However, I still believe Facebook holds a second decryption key for all messages, which they rolled out along with their web access product as described above. So they are not e2e encrypted by any reasonable interpretation of the phrase.

I am not aware of any way to e2e encrypt iCloud backups, so the vast majority of “e2e encrypted” iMessage messages are readable by Apple.

amacneil··on Ask HN: Ads triggered by WhatsApp “end to end encrypted” messages?
I am 99% sure Meta/Facebook have secretly broken WhatsApp e2e encryption by adding a second key to all users.

I have security code change notifications enabled, and around November 4, 2021 a large number of my unrelated contacts suddenly had security code changes. There wasn’t any media reporting at the time, but I remember some others mentioning it on Reddit[0] (would love if anyone here can scroll back in their message history and look for security code changes around the same time - maybe we can finally shine some light on this).

Since then I have assumed they are flat out lying about the fact that “not even WhatsApp can read your messages” (direct quote from the iOS app).

Also note that both iMessage and WhatsApp strongly encourage you to enable iCloud backups, which are not e2e encrypted and readable by Apple (Apple only claim backups are “encrypted” and that messages are “e2e” encrypted):

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/what...

At least Apple are not flat out lying like Meta, but they are still being incredibly deceptive with their marketing.

Use Signal if you care about e2e encryption. Everything else is a marketing slight of hand.

amacneil··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
Web-based data visualization for robotics and self-driving. Robotics is such an interesting industry, and we're only scratching the surface of what new tools are needed.

Try it live here (hit "view sample data"): https://studio.foxglove.dev/

Shameless plug - we're hiring: https://foxglove.dev/careers

amacneil··on Ask HN: Why are distributed systems so polarizing?

amacneil··on Are Magic Links Outdated?
> that’s not what service-level multi-factor authentication protects against

I don't understand your point. This is exactly what multi-factor authentication protects against if you don't store your MFA codes in your password manager.

amacneil··on Are Magic Links Outdated?
They don't need to be - this is a limitation of how the site has implemented magic links. When implemented best, clicking the magic link in your email should simply confirm the authentication, and your _original_ browser window/tab should be signed in.

That way, you can be signing in on a desktop browser, click the email link on your phone (or a different browser sandbox), and the desktop window will be signed in.

amacneil··on Are Magic Links Outdated?
It is strange to me that both this article and commenters in this thread complain about "email security" as being a limitation of magic links, given that the vast majority of password authentication websites allow an email-based password reset flow. Magic links aren't any more or less secure than allowing email-based password reset.
amacneil··on Are Magic Links Outdated?
If you're storing your "multi-factor" authentication codes in the same place (ahem, "factor") as your password, you're doing it wrong.

amacneil··on Why BART uses a nonstandard broad gauge
From TFA: “The pamphlet does not specify why only the wide gauge of five-feet-six inches was tested and not others.”

Standard gauge was ubiquitous in the US at the time, and this engineering firm didn’t even evaluate it in their report, despite the fact that the original BART plans called for standard gauge. Stability of standard gauge has since been proven to be a complete non-issue.

If you read more about the history of BART, everything about it was NIH. They thought they were going to design some new space-age standard and usher in a new era of public transportation.

amacneil··on Why BART uses a nonstandard broad gauge
Basically - NIH syndrome from the 60s.

Some more historical research here:

https://www.kalw.org/show/crosscurrents/2016-07-05/hey-area-...

Seems highly likely that keeping freight trains off the tracks also factored into the decision. Huge shame that they didn't consider the ongoing maintenance cost of using a non-standard gauge.

amacneil··on Flu vaccination linked to 40% reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease
If they only intend to claim correlation, avoiding the word "linked" in the announcement would probably help with general public interpretation.

I feel like in English, "linked" usually implies some sort of potential causation, not just a general relationship. For example: "boyfriend linked to murder case".

amacneil··on One year as a solo dev building open-source data tools without funding
Your advice is correct, but the reason is wrong. If you want to raise money, then inbound VC interest is a great source of leads (led to out series A, similar to sibling comments).

But VCs employ armies of people to trawl the internet for new companies, and as an early stage founder you are time poor. Tell them that you are focusing on building right now but would love to chat when the time is right, add them to a spreadsheet, and go back to work.

The time to start taking calls is when you are actually ready to raise a pre-seed/seed, or ~6-12 months out from your series A (by this point you should have a team who can keep building while you are networking).

Also as the author noticed, treat the VC calls like a phone screen, and ask questions to filter out bad matches. If they don’t lead rounds at your current stage, or don’t “get” your product or market, move on.

amacneil··on We use Dependabot to secure GitHub
That would be nice. It could even run on top of the GH Actions infrastructure now.

Reading between the lines from comments in that thread, it seems like part of the overhead in maintaining dependabot is that there is ruby code reimplementing yarn logic to do in-place lockfile updates behind the scenes. I'm sure it is nice to avoid checking out the whole repo, but it would also multiply the maintenance workload exponentially.

amacneil··on We use Dependabot to secure GitHub
Waiting for Yarn v2/v3 support in Dependabot has been a saga.

amacneil··on Zaplib post-mortem
If you read the history of zaplib they very much started this journey to solve their own problems.

amacneil··on Why does Google use location for language rather than browser settings?
I have not had a chance to test this yet, but apparently setting your locale to en-CA (rather than en-US) solves the problem, since Google no longer assumes you're using default language settings.

Anyone have success with this?
