amaccuish··on Thunderbird 102
ActiveSync for contacts and calendar and Cal/Card DAV are now supported for free by the TbSync plugin.

https://addons.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/addon/tbsync/?...

Sadly no sign of support for EWS, but Evolution supports that.

amaccuish··on Keycloak: Open-Source Identity and Access Management
I like Keyloack, but omg it's ridiculously difficult when using the docker container to import a CA cert. May Java Keystore burn in hell.
amaccuish··on GnuCash
Umm, in the EU due to PSD2, all banks must provide a standardised API: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_banking
amaccuish··on How we built a new, fast file transfer protocol
Never understood, once SMB gets going it's pretty fast, but it takes agessss to list a directory. Like why can't it just pipe the output of dir() or ls (when samba) out over the network.
amaccuish··on Google destroyed my Play Developer Account and my work for the last 2 years
Why do you still use the non X office formats? They're far easier for other office suites to read as their not just a memory dump of internal office structures.
amaccuish··on Apple acquires UK open banking startup Credit Kudos
I understand, but Open Banking has been wonderful. My main German bank has a crap app, but I can use the excellent one from the Sparkasse to access my DKB account, which has made life far easier. Plus all my accounts are in the same app.

I guess it's a two-edged sword.

amaccuish··on My essential Firefox fixes in 2022
If anyone has wondered why their Firefox has become crashy/not loading videos properly recently, see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1751363

Fix is media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled = false.

Also note that your Firefox might have been collecting gigabytes of logs since the latest release because of this bug that you can clear.

amaccuish··on We must return to an economy fueled by innovation, rather than disruption
We had Blueline in Harrogate too. And there was Apple Taxis in Exeter with an app. Ideally Uber should just be an interface that ties these different companies together.

At least here in Berlin, when I book via Uber, I'm told more often than not that it won't be an Uber picking me up but a normal taxi.

amaccuish··on Why does Google use location for language rather than browser settings?
I think I was pretty lucky with the languages I chose. Whilst I find little good French content, the German and Russian webs are pretty well stocked.
amaccuish··on Internet Messaging vs. Congested Network
XMPP is good, but I still remember my BlackBerry being able to send pictures and messages over BBM over a GPRS network fairly swiftly.

Does make one wonder how many inefficiencies are building up in our modern infrastructure.

amaccuish··on I hacked SONOS and YouTube the same day
One day I'll wireshark the weird streaming protocol they use instead of just upgrading to SMB2/3. I'm pretty sure it's HTTP.
amaccuish··on Yggdrasil P2P mesh E2EE IPv6 network
How does key distribution work though? Is it TOFU? I couldn't find anything, just some hand-wavey everything is encrypted.
amaccuish··on Moving Google Contacts and Calendar to NextCloud
Still don't understand how Android doesn't have built-in support for CardDAV/CalDAV. It's built-in on iPhone. And the built-in ActiveSync support has been left to wither and die.
amaccuish··on ‘CIA sidekick’ gives £2.6M to U.K. media groups
I lived there and will happily back their comment up. Have you?

"Please don't post insinuations about astroturfing, shilling, bots, brigading, foreign agents and the like."

amaccuish··on Do svidaniya, Igor, and thank you for Nginx
Because it's spelt "do" in Russian. It's only due to stress and the fact it's a preposition that the way it is said becomes "da".

As the preposition is so small, it's considered together with the following word, which in the genitive has its stress on the "а".

Ever more convinced it's been a good idea to route all my phone traffic through WireGuard.

Though it interests me why mobile networks feel they are able to do this whereas landline ISPs don't tend to in such great numbers. At least, as far as I am aware, Deutsche Telekom aren't adding headers to bare HTTP requests etc.

I'm wondering if it's actually worth caving and having my home traffic tunneled to some provider more reputable.

amaccuish··on The ITC declares Google infringed on audio tech patents held by Sonos [pdf]
Tbf I'm not particularly bothered, Google Cast for music streaming has for me at least been pretty poor.

Apple has made AirPlay more open than Google has. Google Cast regularly takes 30 seconds to start streaming YouTube Music, where as AirPlay starts within 3 seconds. At least with AirPlay I can use shairplay to emulate a speaker.

Therefore I bought Sonos speakers over Google Cast speakers for use from my Android phone.

amaccuish··on BlackBerry held the tiny keys to my heart
I do miss my physical keyboard too, but annoyingly, touchscreens are great for multilingual typing with different writing systems.
amaccuish··on DaedalOS: Desktop Environment in the Browser
Nice, even replicates the slowness of the start menu.
amaccuish··on End of the line finally coming for BlackBerry devices
I actually miss the architecture. Although the centralisation had its problems, the efficiency was fantastic. Everything was compressed, data was pushed instead of pulled, and with BES every device had an automatic always on VPN-like connection, like WireGuard. And now my phone has to deal with hanging TCP connections, IP address changes and ActiveSync just crapping out.
amaccuish··on End of the line finally coming for BlackBerry devices
To further this, BlackBerries relied on a special GPRS APN to get access to the internet. BlackBerry had VPNs and leased lines with major carriers and Blackberries would communicate via the APN to proxies located in BlackBerry data centers. All the network config was stored on the phone in "Service Books" and could be pushed out via carriers or BES Admins.

amaccuish··on Self-Hosting Dozens of Web Applications and Services on a Single Server
Out of interest, what is the email server? Your server's EHLO wasn't very revealing.
amaccuish··on A realization of why email is critical infrastructure for the Internet
Yes, I use the eID software on Linux all the time. It is based on OpenSC and the main stuff in the browser is all standardised. OpenSC is loaded as a plugin to say Firefox, and most of the authentication is standard TLS client cert stuff.

The app is used for changing PINs and there's another one for signing documents.

Signing in the browser uses a extension, code here https://github.com/open-eid/chrome-token-signing

amaccuish··on BlackBerry device and services end of life January 4, 2022
Maybe this? https://www.blackberry.com/us/en/support/devices/end-of-life

If so, end of an era. BIS and BES was a cool architecture for the time.

amaccuish··on Apache Guacamole
Out of interest, we have SAML and OpenID Connect. How do you manage passing the SSO to Windows after displaying the web portal. I couldn't see anything in the Guacomole pages, but Citrix manages this. Where you sign in to the web portal, click a desktop, and don't have to login. Do you get a kerberos ticket, do you have something running on the Windows host or how?
amaccuish··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
I had no reaction to the first 2 or boosters, nor my friends. The plural of anecdote is not data.

What I can say is the Corona I had between the 2nd and booster lasted 1 day, the fastest cold I've ever had. That I had a light infection being due to my vaccination, is backed up by the data.
