amaccuish··on Windows NT vs. Unix: A design comparison
Thank you for your reasoned response.

I still like the idea that I think you originally had, whereby apps could only write to their own specific area, thus containing all their configuration. I think that would solve 99% of all complaints about the registry.

Right now, they can write to anywhere your user has access to.

amaccuish··on Windows NT vs. Unix: A design comparison
Windows NT was multi-user from the start. The only change was the session object added in vista.

Would highly recommend rspamd over SpamAssassin, I've found its results to be much more accurate.
amaccuish··on Deadline looms: Google Workspace mandates OAuth by September 30
Not sure what you mean, but if you're talking about auth'ing to Google Workspace with an external IdP with SAML (here is being talked about auth between the client and Google, like say with IMAP, over OAuth, which in turn can use whatever, including SAML), then no, you have nothing to worry.
amaccuish··on Deadline looms: Google Workspace mandates OAuth by September 30
> Mobile Device Management platforms that configure IMAP, CalDAV, CardDAV, POP or Exchange ActiveSync (Google Sync) are being phased out as well

Hmm... No. ActiveSync remains available to Workspace (read " Enterprise" customers), as well as IMAP, xDAV etc. The key part is the pure basic auth, password auth, is deprecated. OAuth is fine, and all these protocols support OAuth just fine.

(Of course, OAuth can also mean username/password auth, but it is generally assumed that MFA comes in to play here).

Love the Register, but this poorly researched.

But also a massive problem for people who have scanners than send stuff via SMTP, they now need to work via OAuth.

> My reading of how mDNS works is that it should suffer from similar problems to SSDP on routers that can't broadcast/multicast between radios

This smells of someone who is not a network engineer. mDNS works fine, it has known ways to route it across broadcast domains, and actually, way more products out of the box can "reflect" mDNS across VLANs than SSDP. What on earth does that have to do with broadcasting "between radios"?.

> This is because the speakers all know where each other are on the local network (thanks to SSDP),

But you just said above they switched to mDNS?

amaccuish··on Canada 'sleepwalking' into cashless society, consumer advocates warn
Not here in Germany unfortunately. I miss this from NZ, just one card with savings, credit, cheque all in one.
amaccuish··on Canada 'sleepwalking' into cashless society, consumer advocates warn
Sounds like a mirror of the Girocard here in Germany. My bank card now has both girocard and visa on it, and works online.

Allegedly, Wero, coming from the banks of the EU, should in the next year or two, unite all the similar national systems across Europe in to one, I guess kind of like UnionPay.

amaccuish··on Microsoft Chose Profit over Security, Whistleblower Says
Because as far as I can tell, there was no "vulnerability" here, it's just how the product works. Stealing an OAuth key is just as bad. Stealing a domain's krbtgt key is just as bad.

Businesses want that when they login to a computer, they are SSO'ed in to all their apps. That's how ADFS works, you authenticate to it using kerberos and it issues you a SAML token. Here they stole apparently the key used to sign the SAML token so they could generate their own.

Unless there was some vulnerability that exposed the key publically, I fail to see how in this particular incident its Microsoft's fault.

They did if you were on o2, that's why I'm still with Aldi Talk (they use the o2 network); they've had LTE through the entire network for a while now. The new thing is 5G for everyone.

Still bummed that Duolingo Maori will never come; NZ government should totally be funding that. Having to do the pure textbook way takes a lot of the fun out of it!

amaccuish··on Flags Are Not Languages
Great idea! I guess though you'd need a new header for a website to declare what languages a page is available in, so the menu options in the browser would only show languages that are actually available? Or a new meta tag? Or maybe there is one already?

It is a useful feature for very specific environments; nothing to do with decentralised web.

Your comment is like saying that firewalls are disgusting because they can be used to lockdown machines.

amaccuish··on Kobo announces color e-readers
Same journey here; except using the Calibre Web integration, an absolutely gamechanger. No need to plug-in to sync my own books, they're pulled straight from my Pi. And I love how all that was required was editing a line in the config file on the storage; they seem like fairly open devices.

Also glad to get away from the Amazon proprietary formats.

amaccuish··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
I'm responding to the parent "It effectively puts the entire country into a position where unless a citizen is born relatively wealthy..."

Sure the thread is about limited-liability, but parent argues as if non-wealthy people can't form businesses, which is not true.

amaccuish··on Vala Programming Language
IIRC most "native" apps in elementaryOS are written in Vala.

Am lost. I started a business here in Germany as a Kleinunternehmer, cost me 30 EUR. GmbH is not the only form available.
