aluminussoma··on Facial Recognition’s Threat to Privacy Is Worse Than Anyone Thought
I updated my Google Photos app and was amazed to see that it could search all of my photos by clicking on an icon of a person's face. It even found faces of people in multiple photos whom I don't know. I couldn't find any mis-labeled photos. When I showed this to a family member, they were not amazed but creeped out.

If there were a way to hook this up with my Nest Cam, I would be speechless.

The article focuses on its impact to people of color. Will this specific issue go away if accuracy becomes near perfect? We'll still have to deal with its impact on everyone - and that could invite broader regulation.

aluminussoma··on Is Facebook’s Massive Open Office Scaring Away Developers?
My personal anecdote: The main reason I never consider interviewing at Facebook is because of their office layout. I politely decline their requests to chat. And that's totally their choice to make. Maybe it works for them, but I know it doesn't work for me.
aluminussoma··on Google Noto Fonts
Noto fonts are great. I especially love the OFL licensing. I wanted to include fonts in a mobile application and there was confusion on whether including a GPL version of the fonts would force me to GPL my app - something I could not do. I couldn't find a definite answer.

With Noto's OFL licensing, I no longer had that worry.

aluminussoma··on Flexport (YC W14) raises $65M Series B
I think they're a very fascinating company! I just don't know what else to comment. I hope they do well.
aluminussoma··on How One of the Deadliest Hajj Accidents Unfolded
Communication? It's easier to communicate to a crowd of people who speak the same language, if the need arises.
aluminussoma··on Legendary Apple Engineer Gets Rejected for Genius Bar Job
Thanks for the response. From the replies, it is evident that this subject touches some raw nerves!

I wanted to run that small experiment as a way of showing that the shortage of engineers is overstated (a common refrain in the H1-B visa debates). I am not sure if Google is one of the companies that says they can't find qualified engineers. Many peer companies to Google do say that. Having a very high false negative rate is something that should be taken into account with the current visa debates.

aluminussoma··on Legendary Apple Engineer Gets Rejected for Genius Bar Job
I have wanted to run an experiment of famous programmers or computer scientists applying to jobs at Google/Facebook/Etc (under an assumed identity) and seeing if they get rejected. My hypothesis is that there would be several notable rejections.

Unfortunately, I do not not anyone well enough to conduct this experiment.

aluminussoma··on How I sold my company to Twitter, in spite of my own stupidity
It's fascinating to hear a small part of his side of the story. Here's a TechCrunch writeup of the original acquisition: https://techcrunch.com/2012/05/10/twitter-acquires-restengin...
aluminussoma··on [dead]
Facebook's front page is dynamically generated for every user. Google can essentially throw up a static page even if everything goes wrong in the backend.

Facebook has to do a lot more work to avoid the appearance of being down. Perhaps a better comparison would be Facebook versus Gmail. I've seen Gmail go down several times.

aluminussoma··on Google Intrusion Detection Problems
Google Cloud publishes a Root Cause analysis after technical incidents. I wonder if this non-technical incident is worthy of a root cause analysis. As a potential customer, I know I'd feel more comfortable seeing this organizational "bug" fixed.
aluminussoma··on Google Intrusion Detection Problems
Reaching a human being is a common problem with all Internet businesses. I've had similar frustrations with Google competitors. As an industry, we have to do much better with customer service. Our users are real human beings.
aluminussoma··on Valve – Handbook for New Employees (2012) [pdf]
As I read through this thread, I was thinking of this book, too! Great book that is very relevant to this topic.
aluminussoma··on Yahoo sold to US telecoms giant Verizon
Not quite. Yahoo's value at the time was still substantially undervalued. Don't forget Yahoo sold off a piece of their Alibaba stake after the bid - some estimates say had Yahoo held on to it, they would be worth much more today.
aluminussoma··on Many Southwest Airlines flights grounded by computer issues
Southwest Airlines experienced issues with "multiple technology systems" today. It left flights grounded and the website inoperable.

It's amazing that their business can grind to a halt because their IT systems failed. Does anyone have details on what exactly failed?

aluminussoma··on Show HN: I built my wedding website using Polymer
Great job! I created my own website with Bootstrap and a couple of hours, but it does not look half as good as yours.

One idea I had was to create a template wedding website service. There are a few out there, but I think the idea can be done better.

aluminussoma··on Hiring Is Broken – My interview experience in the tech industry
The guy was lazy and not very competent. We hired him for a specific capability that he was supposedly doing in his previous job. He knew the words and terms but was dangerous in his position. I can only assume that his previous workplace, a very large company, kept him away from doing anything meaningful so that he didn't mess things up. That's what we ended up doing.

I later discovered his resume was an identical copy of his coworker's resume (both were submitted several months apart for the same job).

aluminussoma··on Hiring Is Broken – My interview experience in the tech industry
I am totally empathetic to this. I did not intend for it to be a trite statement. I'm in the same boat.

Not all ventures require lots of savings. (Time? Definitely). It is conceivably possible to try and bootstrap something outside of working hours.

The original author was able to devote much time to GitHub projects, so it's not a stretch that the author might be able to bootstrap an idea.

aluminussoma··on Hiring Is Broken – My interview experience in the tech industry
Nurses also have licenses and registered credentials. If they mess up badly, they can be disciplined and lose their license and career. So there is a self-regulation that takes place in that industry. Were it not so, I could imagine nursing interviews to be a lot more intense.

There is no such regulation in the tech industry. One bad hire I made faked his technical capabilities and I regretted it a lot when I had to work with him. I hope I've now learned how to spot that type of candidate (without resorting to interview hazing).

aluminussoma··on Hiring Is Broken – My interview experience in the tech industry
The only way out of this mess is to start and bootstrap your own company. Hiring is broken, therefore hire yourself.
aluminussoma··on Open Source Project – View 689 Salaries Posted on Hacker News, Share Yours
Glassdoor has no way to distinguish newer salaries from older salaries - all are used to give one average number. Their average salary has so much old data that it doesn't keep up with the rate at which it's increasing these days.
aluminussoma··on Intel to Cut 12,000 Jobs, Forecast Misses Amid PC Blight
And do you think these same companies are just as efficient as identifying who's slacking off? I don't think so.

They may know that 10% of the company is slacking off, but they often end up amputating a hand when they meant to just trim the fingernails.

aluminussoma··on Intel to Cut 12,000 Jobs, Forecast Misses Amid PC Blight
A good friend was laid off from Intel during their last round of layoffs. Without going to into details that would identify my friend, he was laid off after losing a game of internal politics. His division's vice president even apologized to him for his layoff.

My friend's story gave me the impression of Intel being a highly dysfunctional company. My friend was sad to leave Intel, but I think it was good for him in the long run.

For those about to be laid off from Intel, I hope it also works out for you.

aluminussoma··on Zynga to Put Headquarters Building in San Francisco on the Market
Adobe passed on that space and surely regretted it when they started growing again. Adobe would surely be interested in it - if Zynga were to vacate.
