altdataseller··on Web scraping with GPT-4o: powerful but expensive
What percentage of requests usually get dropped? Is it something miniscule like 1% or are we talking non trivial like 10%
altdataseller··on Launch HN: AnswerGrid (YC S24) – Web research tool for lead generation
What happens when I download all the leads you give me? Why would i keep my subscription? Of course you might find new leads that fit my query, but that initial list is good enough for last for awhile to reach out to…

Also, does the scraping of the Linkedin profiles happen on my machine or your servers? If on mine, do I need a LI account? Do i need to be logged in?

altdataseller··on Ask HN: How to sell a startup for $5M in 5-10 years? (not about product ideas)
Personally, i think this line of thinking is going to lead you down a flawed path. The better question is what pain point do I have the unique expertise and experience to solve, and how can I build a product that is differentiated enough to stand out, and any unfair advantages I have in getting customers.

If you can answer that, everything else falls into place. Buyers will come after you - you wont need to worry about that. Whether I go after it alone, raise funding, etc all depends on that product idea. That comes first, not those other things.

altdataseller··on Launch HN: MinusX (YC S24) – AI assistant for data tools like Jupyter/Metabase
What other analytics tools do you plan on supporting?
altdataseller··on Launch HN: MinusX (YC S24) – AI assistant for data tools like Jupyter/Metabase
In your demo, you seemed to have performed everything on a small dataset.

How’s the performance on doing the same analysis on a dataset with 1 billion rows for instance?

Also does this work with self hosted Metabase or Metabase Cloud? Or both?

altdataseller··on Ask HN: Best resources for job market trends and data?
Why would you want to track the lifecycle of jobs?
altdataseller··on Why won't some people pay for news? (2022)
+1. It doesn't entertain me, and it doesn't help me make more money. And I don't need it to survive. I think that pretty much sums it up
altdataseller··on Launch HN: Manaflow (YC S24) – Automate repetitive office work in tables
Now this I would use…
altdataseller··on Launch HN: Manaflow (YC S24) – Automate repetitive office work in tables
Does this integrate with Google Sheets or Excel? If not, i would not use this. My workflow lives in spreadsheets but not your custom spreadsheets. They live in Google Sheets/Excel so you need to meet me where I do my work if you want to make my life easier
altdataseller··on Marketing >>> Engineering and Sales
Its not a bad product if it solves their problem. Maybe it doesnt look elegant, or the code is convoluted or its not intuitive to use.

Buts its not a bad product

altdataseller··on Launch HN: Promi (YC S24) – AI-powered ecommerce discounts
Re: small merchants. Thats what I dont get. The companies that need this are the big ones not the small merchants with relatively few products they wish to discount. They’re better off investing time and effort to making more sales not nickeling and diming with discounts
altdataseller··on Japan's Leader, Fumio Kishida, Will Step Down
You can say the same thing about most countries. Its like a human instinctual need to constantly want political change
altdataseller··on Launch HN: Firezone (YC W22) – Zero-trust access platform built on WireGuard
I am referring to the web app
altdataseller··on The Story of Samsung's failed deal with iFixit, as told by iFixit's CEO
Its also easy for me to see as a 3rd party. Perhaps ifixit should manage the whole manufacturing and logistical aspect of maintaining all those spare parts themselves?

Too unprofitable? Too much hassle? Oh..

altdataseller··on Launch HN: Firezone (YC W22) – Zero-trust access platform built on WireGuard
Not a comment on the actual product but did you use a specific template or stack on the app you show in the demo?
altdataseller··on Launch HN: Martin (YC S23) – Using LLMs to Make a Better Siri
“It definitely isnt the greatest at digging into a topic”

I think this is the greatest drawback to using a tool like this. It does good with the low hanging fruit tasks like responding to a txt. But it does poorly at a loooong range of long tail tasks like conpany research, or summarizing a topic or gathering the latest headlines for a topic, or finding leads or alerting me when someone mentions my brand on Twitter or when someone links to my blog post.

And when soneone tries to do any of those things and gets a bad user experience, theyll give up on your tool

altdataseller··on Attribution is dying, clicks are dying
I truly dont get why this is an innovative change.

Shouldnt marketers have been doing this since Day 1?

altdataseller··on Ask HN: Discovering that I am mediocre
Exhibit number one :)
altdataseller··on CrowdStrike will be liable for damages in France, based on the OVH precedent
If a business closed down because of the OVH incident, how were the damages calculated? 1x annual revenue? Profit? 5x?
altdataseller··on Google is the only search engine that works on Reddit now, thanks to AI deal
Many other websites enforce rate limiting or IP banning for public pages (using products like Cloudflare). Why is this not legal?
altdataseller··on $1T Rout Hits Nasdaq 100 over AI Jitters in Worst Day Since 2022
Where is the evidence behind this? Yes the Nasdaq sold off, but who said this is because of AI jitters? Who says it because investors are questioning whether AI is worth the hype? Did Bloomberg interview all these big investors who sold tech stocks today?

… or are they just telling the narrative that will drive the most eyeballs? Because they can’t have a lame headline like “$1T wiped from Nasdaq because there were more sellers than buyers”???

I know its “bloomberg” but we can’t just blindly believe everything they tell us.

altdataseller··on Ask HN: Managed databases that DON'T run in AWS/GCP/Azure?
1. Automated backup is just a one time setup task. You set it up and maybe test the backup once a month (and even that could be automated)

2. Similarly, monitoring is a one time task too. And if this isnt yet a project making $xx,000/month, you probably dont need monitoring yet.

3. Similarly, if your project isnt making a ton of $$$, you can forgo OS updates and only take care of critical secure updates.

In summary, the things you think you need to do, you can delay until youre making non trivial $$$ from it.

altdataseller··on Is an All-in-One Database the Future?
I’m sure some people do. Just simply because ppl do all sorts of things they shouldn’t do.
altdataseller··on The Value of Milk.com
That was 20 years ago
altdataseller··on Ask HN: Why are people paying so much for Vercel?
>> if your business doesn't have need for redundant data stores or major backend services

If that’s the case, your web app is much less complex too, which reduces the need for a product that reduces complexity?

altdataseller··on Microsoft points finger at the EU for not being able to lock down Windows
Grewt, can the EU force Microsoft to open up their Linkedin API as well?
altdataseller··on Multisatellite data depicts a record-breaking methane leak from a well blowout
“Save the earth?! The planet will be absolutely fine… humans on the other hand..”
altdataseller··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
I would add that a lot of ppl in this industry also just blindly follow the herd too, without any independent thinking.

Oh, everyone is using Crowdstrike? I guess i have to do so too!

Oh, everyone is using Kubernetes? I guess i better start migrating our services to it too!

Oh, everyone is using this fancy Vercel stuff? We better use it too!

Oh everyone is migrating their workloads to the cloud even tho we dont need to and it costs 5x more?!! We better do so too!!

altdataseller··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
Unless that threat was a 0day bug that allows anyone to SSH to any machine with any public key, it was not worth pushing it out in haste. Full stop. No excuses.
altdataseller··on It's not just CrowdStrike – the cyber sector is vulnerable
And what if this bug happened to affect Linux somehow too? What then?
