alrs··on Linux Foundation launches an open source fork of Redis
This fork is going to be BSD licensed, so all of the fixes and improvements can upstream to Redis.

redict is LGPL licensed, so that can't happen.

alrs··on Is my plane a 737 MAX?
It sounds nothing like that. Boeing is going to lose deals because carriers don't want to deal with repeated groundings. The US economy will reflect that.
alrs··on Is my plane a 737 MAX?
The first worry as an American is having a pillar of your country's economy managed by incompetents.
alrs··on Tell HN: OpenAI saga – I cancelled my Poe subscription
Caring about SV board politics strikes me as deeply weird.
alrs··on Framework Laptop Broke the Hacker Ceiling
Fair enough, but that's a 1999-grade dongle.
alrs··on Framework Laptop Broke the Hacker Ceiling
Good for them, but haven't they still not figured out how to do an ethernet port yet?
alrs··on The costs of microservices (2020)
A "microservice" solves scaling issues for huge companies. If you have 60 microservices, you should probably have 600 engineers (10 per) to deal with them. If you're completely underwater and have 10 services per engineer, you're 100% absolutely play-acting "web-scale" for an audience of really dumb managers/investors.
alrs··on Someone is trying to rebuild Friendster
Whenever someone says "ops doesn't matter" I'm reminded of Friendster's huge early-advantage lead that was squandered because they couldn't keep the site up for more than six hours a day.
alrs··on Software disenchantment
I'm reminded of these issues when I think about export controls on processors sold to China: I don't think it will have any effect. US-based programmers burn resources thoughtlessly. From what I've seen, Chinese developers often don't. Compare Gitlab to Gitea.

alrs··on Ask HN: How will a hardware company survive in 2023?
Hasn't "most won't make it or will be acquired by big tech" been the story for the last 50 years?
alrs··on Ukraine Tricks Russia into Wasting Ammunition
Good news for NATO, but does it matter when Russia has 7x the production capacity?

alrs··on Ask HN: Are we upon the convergence of Apache, Nginx and “other”?
I have nothing bad to say about Apache, and it felt kind of weird that people were investing time in replacing it when so many of the scripting languages that sat behind it were hot-garbage, top to bottom.

I assume that "other" is "load balancers."

alrs··on “Stop Making Sense” is having a theatrical rerelease
The Ramones were "punk" because their primary songwriter Dee-Dee was a male prostitute, the very definition of "punk."
alrs··on “Stop Making Sense” is having a theatrical rerelease
Yes, punk was called new-wave in the late '70s. It was a reference to French cinema of the 1950s. "New Wave" didn't mean skinny ties and pink Trapper Keepers until the '80s. What you think of as New Wave was probably from the movement called "New Romantic." Think Duran-Duran.

Here's a radio ad for the Sex Pistols playing Dallas in January 1978. "The Sex Pistols bring the new wave to the Metroplex this Tuesday night at the Longhorn Ballroom."

alrs··on “Stop Making Sense” is having a theatrical rerelease
I'm old enough to think of that as boring-era Talking Heads, but it's great to know they've been in the same room together doing press after so many decades of shit-talk.
alrs··on Ask HN: YouTube keeps suggesting vids I marked “not interested”. What can I do?
The youtube algorithm is very aggressively trying to get you to watch dumb shit, and you are correct that there is no way to opt-out.

It's best at present to not engage with recommendations at all, and instead start following the RSS feeds of the channels you enjoy.

alrs··on MAC Address Vendor Lookup
I have a tool to generate plausible-but-random MAC addresses that align to the vendor of your choice.

alrs··on IBM Mandating Return to Office by Today
Shadow layoff.
alrs··on [dead]
Thanks for the demo accounts.

Is there a documented API or reference client library in Go?

alrs··on Show HN: I built a Python web framework

alrs··on Baghdad closes LED advert screens after hacker shows porn film on a screen
No disagreement from me.
alrs··on Baghdad closes LED advert screens after hacker shows porn film on a screen
I think you're pretty bent if you're hoping that children were exposed to public porn of any sort.
alrs··on Jujutsu: A Git-compatible DVCS that is both simple and powerful
Does it honor NO_COLOR?

If not, then I have https://github.com/alrs/nofun

alrs··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
None of the people who hold IBM stock will be holding it in 10 years. None of the executives at IBM will be there in 10 years. Why would they bother?
alrs··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
Decades? How many?
alrs··on R/DevOps Migration?
If people can't figure out USENET and need consumer-gamer stuff like Discord, I wonder what "devops" ever meant.
alrs··on R/DevOps Migration?
Moving back to USENET makes sense for the devops community.
alrs··on Demo: Fully P2P and open source Reddit alternative
Sure it does, that's why people PGP-sign their posts.
alrs··on Ask HN: US-based non-enterprise programming conferences?
Language conferences are more inspiring than product/project conferences. Gophercon > Kubecon.
