alphang··on The iPhone 5
> The guy makes a career out of opinionated, mostly unsubstantiated one liners.

He also writes really good essays. Can we please also have more people delivering this kind of medicine?

Look, I agree that Gruber has blinders on sometimes. (I thought his posts today about earPods was blindingly positive until the addendum.) But people seem to react with vitriol more than arguments.

alphang··on The iPhone 5
kool-aid?

I find Daring Fireball to be at its best when Gruber pushes back on Apple's design decisions with thoughtful critique: skeuomorphism, Safari tabs experiments, this screen thing.

alphang··on iPhone 5
Not that this is a real solution, but you can lock and swipe up. Two motions instead of one.
alphang··on Microsoft gets a new logo for the first time since 1987
They started using the new wordmark in June, in the Surface promo materials: http://photos.allthingsd.com/photos/i-vGmfLVB/0/M/i-vGmfLVB-...

I guess this is the official launch.

alphang··on I Have 50 Dollars
Yikes. That's confusing (malicious?). It left me with a sense of distaste for heello. You guys may want to clarify.
alphang··on What Twitter's Announcement could have said
Marco's analysis doesn't make it sound all that reasonable: http://www.marco.org/2012/08/16/twitter-api-changes

I'm concerned about the rules about embedding a tweet. So now there'll be all this widget stuff on websites when all I'm trying to read is a quoted tweet? I guess this move is to let Twitter track my behavior across the web (http://dcurt.is/twitter-is-tracking-you-on-the-web), but I worry about its impact on other sites that use the API.

alphang··on Twitter to Client Developers: Drop Dead
I don't see the part about this change dooming Twitter in the article.

You have an interesting point about commoditization, however. It makes me think about the IM space and all the different services there.

As for eyeballs, I think a Twitter competitor can do what media companies do — pay for certain celebrities, authors, speakers to move their microblog to their service — do a few of those, and you'll start to have an audience.

alphang··on Thinking This iPad Mini Thing Even Througher
He also expressed a slight desire to adjust his focus, in a post from earlier this year - http://daringfireball.net/linked/2012/05/25/three-things

Slightly off topic: The Atlantic had an article yesterday about DF's 10th anniversary (http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/12/08/happy-10...), and it had this bit of astute criticism:

The past year, DF hasn't been as enjoyable as its been in the past. Apple, Gruber's Beatrice, is engorged as a company, and seems now to be veering from interestingly complex to dully complicated. [...] But, in light of that victory, his renegade confidence has become an assured superiority. He hasn't written, for a long time, an engaging description of a laptop or an account of an anthropomorphized interface element.

To which Jason Kottke agreed: http://kottke.org/12/08/an-appreciation-of-10-years-of-darin...

So perhaps Gruber is consciously responding to these critiques and upping his game - which is nice, because this post was a great read.

alphang··on It’s not just the geeks like us
I find it strange that people would pooh-pooh Marco's argument away. Marco wrote an article two years ago called "The Mac App Store isn’t for today’s Mac developers" (http://www.marco.org/2010/10/29/the-mac-app-store-isnt-for-t...) so he obviously knows the appeal and potential of the App Store.

If anything, they should hear him out more because he was an early advocate.

alphang··on Does flash photography really damage art? The persistence of a myth.
I take photos (where allowed) of artworks simply as a reminder that I liked the piece, not to preserve a realistic reproduction of it. In that sense it's like any other photograph - I'm capturing a facsimile of my experience.

Regarding the article, I think flash photography should still be banned, simply because it makes for a better museum experience. Can you imagine the crowd in front of the Mona Lisa? It would be like red carpet for the Oscars.

alphang··on Apple granted broad mobile patent
But didn't the US government just change patent law to first-to-file?
alphang··on Making Friends Over 30 with Grubwithus
Interesting idea, however I think it feels a bit too deliberate for my tastes. Based on the groups it can seem more like a networking tool.

Beyond a startup, I would also recommend volunteering, doing sports, taking a class, or if you're spiritually-inclined, going to church, in order to make new friendships. Those tend to be more regular, and you're not so focused on the conversation itself.

alphang··on Ask HN: Where is the best place to learn Java?
I know you're asking about "place", but ...

Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates' "Head First Java" book.

Her SCJP book is also pretty good, but it's more skewed towards the certification exam.

alphang··on The Slow Web
I thought you were joking, because you're basically describing the postal service, ie. snail mail.
alphang··on Dan Benjamin: Regarding The Talk Show
Agreed, I actually really enjoy Gruber's tone on the new show.

I'd guess a part of this may be that Gruber wants an editorial reboot with the new show, so that he has more control and it directly complements Daring Fireball (Note the new description: "Sort of like the director's commentary track for Daring Fireball.") I actually look forward to it.

Dan's a good host on other shows, and a class act, but I've felt that he and Gruber lacked chemistry for a long time.

alphang··on John Gruber takes 'The Talk Show' to Mule Radio
It's like a band. Lots of good bands split up. Some bands explain why, others just give a cryptic message.
alphang··on Facebook Unsocial Reader
Agreed. Every time I see it I get very angry. It's like seeing software betray your friends.

I've had at least five friends who have unknowingly shared their readings on Facebook. A few of them were guys who were reading about sexy gossip and celebrity bikini shots and whatnot. The result was embarrassing and annoying for them.

alphang··on Facebook Unsocial Reader
Yes. My friends who are sharing their gossipy and sex-related readings have not noticed it. They're all shocked by what ends up on Facebook.

As for just using the social reader as a user — well, I shouldn't have to agree to an app and share my social graph just to read news stories. Friction Sharing is great and working already.
