No longer an active account, but in the year 2021 HN does not support account deletion so you are reading this instead (you rock guys).

alphadevx··on Ursula K. Le Guin Was a Creator of Worlds
Currently reading it for the first time, and agree that Ursula's writing style is immersive, and also I find her quite poetic (some of the fables she weaves into the story are marvelous). I feel just as lost and confused as the envoy so far, which seems appropriate.

Also the geek in me loves the Ansible ;-)

alphadevx··on PHP Sadness
It only appears to be "insane" if you are not used to working with dynamically-typed languages. PHP has been dynamically-typed from the very beginning, so you need to program defensively and check type at runtime (no assumptions are safe).
alphadevx··on PHP Sadness
Agreed, here is another one to file under "not a big deal": http://phpsadness.com/sad/46
alphadevx··on Facebook is launching a dating feature
The greatest minds in our industry are focused on solving two main (apparent) problems:

1. How to we get people to click on more ads?

2. How do we get more people laid?

Somehow I find this depressing, all that wasted talent.

alphadevx··on Autonomous braking: 'The most significant development since the safety belt'
There has been a similar system on Mercedes cars (Collision Prevent Assist) for years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5ia5e07BqU
alphadevx··on Apple is making a show based on Isaac Asimov’s ‘Foundation’ books
> So I'm much more thrilled about Amazon developing a series based on Banks' "Consider Phlebas"...

Wow that is big news, I did not know that! That book is so cinematic already, it leaps off the page. Should translate to the screen very well. Hope they do "Use of Weapons" and "Player of Games" also, in fact the entire Culture series is an amazing opportunity for TV conversion.

alphadevx··on Qatar's F-15s Will Feature New 'Low Profile' Heads Up Display and New Cockpit
I'm still aghast that Tesla decided to go "all-in" with touch screen controls in their latest car, big step back in ergonomics (and even safety!) for the reasons you have given and more. I would never buy a car with one big touch screen.

alphadevx··on Hands-On with the Nokia 8 Sirocco: Reviving Nokia's 'Dream Phone' Concept
I'd be happier if they fixed the damn microphone issues with the existing Nokia 8 first, or at least acknowledged the issue for those Nokia 8 users (myself included) who can't even make a call on this device: https://community.phones.nokia.com/support/discussions/topic...
alphadevx··on WeWork is set to become the No. 1 tenant of London office space
I have similar negative experience as a tenant of a WeWork rival, overall I think the shared office space fad is a big step in the wrong direction: http://www.alphadevx.com/a/512-Hell-is-a-stylish-shared-offi...
alphadevx··on Why hasn’t the Year of the Linux Desktop happened yet?
Good point, and I agree there is room for a disruption, as right now it's all pretty bland with regards to innovation in the desktop space.
alphadevx··on Why hasn’t the Year of the Linux Desktop happened yet?
From the article:

> Of course what happened here was that Steve Jobs returned to Apple and we suddenly had MacOSX come onto the scene taking at least some air out of the Linux Desktop space.

I really agree with that: if every engineer I know who uses a Mac "because Bash" would use Linux instead, we would have arrived at a decent Linux desktop market-share by now. Kudos Apple.

In saying that, as a desktop Linux user I really don't mind being part of a small user community. I would never switch to MacOSX as it is not (fully) open source, and Windows is nice for running Steam for gaming.

alphadevx··on Hell is a stylish shared office space
LOL! No phone involved, I meant to imply that the timer on the lights is set too aggressively.
alphadevx··on Hell is a stylish shared office space
I have complained about some of these issues, but been ignored. I mentioned that in the blog entry. I really don't think it should be my job to roam around the building, asking people to keep the noise down, take their dogs back, stop hammering etc...

alphadevx··on BlackBerry will shutter its app store on December 31st, 2019
Agreed. I started with WebOS (Pre was my first smartphone), then HP happened. So I jumped to Blackberry 10, then their new CEO moved them to Android. So now now I am a reluctant Android user, because I find it only slightly less invasive than iOS. Very disappointed that this is the state of mobile computing landscape going into 2018.
alphadevx··on Does Peppa Pig encourage inappropriate use of primary care resources?
Fine, consider myself suitable policed for my bad behavior of "having an opinion about a kids TV show". Good job.
alphadevx··on Does Peppa Pig encourage inappropriate use of primary care resources?
> race is your own, silly, interpretation.

Are you dismissing me as "silly Daddy" now? Sorry could not resist ;-)

alphadevx··on Does Peppa Pig encourage inappropriate use of primary care resources?
> Accents are definitely racist though.

I clearly said classist.

> It's a British show; why would you expect anything else?

I was expecting a childrens show, not a reinforcement of a world view that some people (royals) are better than others, just because they are born that way. So elitism. Not a positive message for kids, sorry if you disagree.

Glad you found my post funny though, you should look at some of the other articles online criticizing this show, and remember this is your child's psychology at a very impressionable age being influenced. As a parent, I don't find that funny I take it very seriously.

alphadevx··on Does Peppa Pig encourage inappropriate use of primary care resources?
> You have made fact statements, not stated opinions, in addition to not providing any foundation to base those on which would be required by others regardless.

Read my response below to another poster.

alphadevx··on Does Peppa Pig encourage inappropriate use of primary care resources?
> Let's teach them realistic biology. They're difference species, how could they possibly have rabbit and elephant parents - what would the child be?

Ok if we are going to run with that very tenuous argument, how come there are animals walking around on two legs, wearing clothes, talking to each other? Clearly the lesson for kids is not biology, it's "people" (an analogy thereof in this instance) of the same "type" marry each other exclusively.

> you have differentiated class by accent

No, the show makers have. Either this was a deliberate decision or a mistake.

> but there's no harm in teaching about the royal family and our heritage

I might agree to that if the kids watching were British, but this show is widely exported, so in my case not my heritage (or thankfully my kids).

alphadevx··on Does Peppa Pig encourage inappropriate use of primary care resources?
See my examples below then. Immediately being confronted with "prove it/provide links" responses to a stated opinion, based on personal experience of watching the show in question, is not very helpful either.
alphadevx··on Does Peppa Pig encourage inappropriate use of primary care resources?
Ok some examples:

1. Daddy pig is portrayed as an idiot. In fact, there are no positive male figures in the whole show. Check sexism.

2. All of the animals are married to animals of the same type: there are no "inter-racial" marriages. It is also full of racial stereotypes. Check racism

3. The only person in the show who seems to work, Mrs Rabbit, has several jobs that she does badly (perhaps due to exhaustion) and speaks with a working class English accent (while all of the other characters have upper/middle class accents). Check classism.

4. It heavily promotes the British royal family, especially in the recent movie. Check elitism.

Unless you want to fill your kids full of prejudice from an early age, avoid.

alphadevx··on Does Peppa Pig encourage inappropriate use of primary care resources?
I don't need to prove anything, simple watching a few episodes is sufficient evidence. Or try reading any of these to see I am not alone in this view: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=peppa+pig+sexist&t=hf&ia=web
alphadevx··on Does Peppa Pig encourage inappropriate use of primary care resources?
That show is full of so many inappropriate examples for children, it is unreal. I have banned my kids from watching it.
alphadevx··on Armed with tough computer chips, scientists are ready to return to Venus

alphadevx··on Dell’s gamble on Linux laptops has paid off
Same for me: Dell XPS 13 user, Fedora user, it all "just works" including after a recent Fedora 27 upgrade, although in fairness I did have to replace the Broadcom wi-fi card with an Intel one, due to Intel having far superior Linux drivers: http://www.alphadevx.com/a/510-Replacing-a-Broadcom-wireless...

Once I done that, I now have the perfect developer laptop (in my opinion of course :-) )

alphadevx··on Fedora 27 released
That's what is the issue with my set-up: EDID detection fails, so it defaults back to 1024x768 max resolution, with no way (that I can figure out) to manually override the resolution and refresh rate on Wayland. Tested with Fedora 27 yesterday after upgrading, still not working so back to X11 for me :-(
