alphabet9000··on Maybe we could tone down the JavaScript (2016)
i care, plenty of other people care.
alphabet9000··on There's never been a better time to build websites
something just in case you need to over-engineer it quickly: http://postmodernize.telnet.asia
alphabet9000··on RadioShack – Bringing Cryptocurrency to the Mainstream
RadioShack devolved in such a way, with a long dying death, that all of my memories of early radioshack have been replaced with later-year memories of their store, when they became a total joke. I have no nostalgia for the brand. I'm sure it would be different if they went out of business with dignity in like 2001.

The last time I went into Radioshack to 'get something' in 2011, i needed to get a couple of cables to connect a mini HDMI cable to a full size connector. They didn't have the exact cable so I had to get several different ones to make the connection work. The price for the cables was literally $91, so I didn't get it, and ordered it online instead. Sad

alphabet9000··on Show HN: Yearly Faves – showcase your fave books and support indie bookshops
consider using smaller thumbnails for those books (the site uses 8.8MB of bandwidth just to load those book covers)
alphabet9000··on Tailwind CSS v3.0
regarding 'contraditing everything you know about good design' i feel this way about designing webpages using <table> elements. the constraint really forces you to be creative with using image elements to make everything fit on the page just right. styling with tables used to be popular, but then it went out of fashion, unfortunately. i'd like to see it make a comeback. i'm not being sarcastic either.
alphabet9000··on Ask HN: Are new ThinkPads still worthy?
note that on many of the new thinkpads, the exhaust vent is on the right side. if you are right handed and use a mouse, it will blow hot air directly onto your hand.

alphabet9000··on A Handy Little System for Animated Entrances in CSS
most web pages already have lots of 'animated entrances' in the form of the entire page hopping around all over the place as elements are loaded via client side rendering, flashes of unstyled text, etc. for example, here's what this css-tricks webpage looks like when the page loads [0]. any CSS page loading animation you add to this page would have to 'compete' with the unsightly effects of the page trying to go through several steps to render itself.

i think it's always such a relief when i click on a link to any site, and the page loads, and there's no animated anything whatsoever.

alphabet9000··on Learn RegEx step by step, from zero to advanced
cool site and idea, here's 3 site UI suggestions

there's a bug when entering text into the regex area which creates new padded elements show up which makes text on the page shift, e.g. https://i.imgur.com/AFBccIn.gif

the line height in the subtitle area could be increased so the text isn't so cramped ( https://i.imgur.com/HReADcS.png )

the background color of the entire page should be darker (or use some other solution) to make the <code> looking text more distinct as code text. ( dark grey on dark blue doesn't really stand out https://i.imgur.com/8Nt9YNl.png )

alphabet9000··on Pinterest ruined photo search on the internet
if you use ublock origin, you can permanently remove pinterest results in google images with the following filter:

www.google.com##.isv-r:has-text(/pinterest.com/)

shameless plug: i've been maintaining a browser extension for a couple of years called 'google images restored' [0] which reverts google images to how it was before 2019. that extension, mixed with the ublock origin filter removing unwanted domains (pinterest, alamy, 123rf, etc), makes google images enjoyable again for me.

alphabet9000··on Google introduces mandatory 2-Step Verification for Google Accounts
I'm trying to update a chrome extension, and it now asks me to set up 2FA. I don't want to use a phone, and I don't see any option for using Google Authenticator to do one time keys. It is asking for a physical hardware key. Surely there's got to be another way to do this right?
alphabet9000··on What do I need to read to be a CSS dev?
go look at anything made by laurel schwulst for a primer on how to do things the right way
alphabet9000··on Making the whole web better, one canvas at a time
I have been disappointed by cross browser discrepancies in the canvas element. Chrome and FF handle Alpha values very differently, and the results are extremely noticeable if you do anything that involves layering many semi-transparent layers on top of each other. There are other floating point rounding error quirks as well, e.g., firefox can translate a context by 0.001px whereas chrome is limited to a precision of only 0.01px. These discrepancies make it impossible to do certain things that look the same on all browsers.

alphabet9000··on How to permanently delete your Facebook account
Does FB still attempt to Guilt you when you try to quit, e.g., showing 5 pictures of your Friends saying that your friends will "miss you" ?

Brandon will miss you. Catherine will miss you. David will miss you. Kevin will miss you. Sarah will miss you.

alphabet9000··on URLs: It's Complicated
Even browser developers have made mistakes as a result of the complexity of the spec, resulting in things like CVE-2018-6128 [0] happening.
