almostApatriot1··on Y Combinator is accepting applications for S18
please give extra scrutiny to blockchain start ups looking to ICO. I've seen Y Combinator tossed around for a couple companies as a means to pump their coin, and I'm sure a lot of would be scam coiners would love that type of attention.
almostApatriot1··on Hyperloop costs and challenges undermine pinned hopes
seems like a lot of people think compromising the vacuum could lead to train derailment and very likely the death of everyone on board (they're traveling at 700 mph after all)
almostApatriot1··on Hyperloop costs and challenges undermine pinned hopes
Would it be economically feasible to use the hyperloop to transport just goods and not people, similar to a pipeline vs train transport? I always see it referenced in connection to human travel, but it seems like safety is one of the biggest issues.
almostApatriot1··on Switzerland “Should Become the Crypto-Nation” Says Minister
Tezos was set up in a way to avoid any sort of regulatory scrutiny. Remember the ICO wasn't an ICO. It was a 'donation' in which no obligations were promised toward the donators.

They can't change their minds later and cry about it when Breitman wants to try to implement a takeover.

almostApatriot1··on Crime in New York City Plunges to a Level Not Seen Since the 1950s
I live in Brooklyn as well and some things I've noticed:

1. If there's an uptick in crime, police will put up a manned tower for a while.

2. If there's a murder, they will set up a mobile command center in the vicinity.

3. They regularly use helicopters to hunt down suspects. I hear them maybe once or twice a month flying in the area.

almostApatriot1··on India’s IT industry laid off more than 56k employees this year
probably some manager is invested in bitcoin
almostApatriot1··on China to Overtake U.S. Economy by 2032
> India’s advance won’t stop there, according to the CEBR, which sees it taking the top place in the second half of the century.

what's the reasoning behind this claim? Purely population growth?

Also surprised Brazil is supposed to have a top 6 economy by 2032. Isn't their economy in the gutter and based on soybean and oil production?

almostApatriot1··on Tiananmen Square 1989 death toll was at least 10,000 according to UK documents
And it's a huge joke now in China (at least the fact that you're not supposed to mention it.)
almostApatriot1··on Target to Buy Shipt for $550M
It was an honest question. I don't see what your beef is. So many top level employees show to put their name on something for a year and leave with a payout. I've fallen scam to this a number of times myself.
almostApatriot1··on Pineapple Fund: Donating $86M of Bitcoins to Charity
It'd be nice if some of the money were used to make it easier for charities to convert to cash as quickly as possible. Bitcoin pointlessly consumes so much dirty energy, I imagine many environmental charities see bitcoin akin to blood money.
almostApatriot1··on CVS Is Said to Agree to Buy Aetna
I wonder how much this has to do with the strong push for Online Pharmacies over the past decade. I hate using them, but my deductible costs next year have increased so much that I will have no choice.
almostApatriot1··on US Senate Bill S.1241 to Criminalize Concealed Ownership of Bitcoin
I say good. Those coins don't need to go mainstream so they can be held, pumped, and dumped. Let people use them for buying drugs.
almostApatriot1··on Bitcoin ‘Ought to Be Outlawed,’ Nobel Prize Winner Stiglitz Says
the blockchain depends on a third party running it
almostApatriot1··on Bitcoin passes 10,000 USD
it's worse than useless. It consumes 30.14TWh a year of electricity for what?
almostApatriot1··on DNAinfo and Gothamist Are Shutting Down
The content is still in their CMS somewhere. They just redirected the index to a different page. Could have even been someone who didn't work directly at DNAInfo. Ricketts employs a lot of people.
almostApatriot1··on DNAinfo and Gothamist Are Shutting Down
Sounds like he fired every single employee on the spot. I can see the logic behind redirecting the site to a static asset when you have nobody to manage it.
almostApatriot1··on The worldwide reputation of products produced in different countries
Same for Italy. I always thought, like Greece and Poland, it's where EU manufacturers get cheap labor. On the flip side, I thought made in Japan would be top 3. People always look for the label on Japanese line products (zojirushi, fujifilm, etc)
almostApatriot1··on Fidelity CEO Abigail Johnson says the company is mining cryptocurrencies
> Johnson said that the company had made several venture investments in bitcoin-related businesses and that the company was looking at applications of blockchain technologies alongside several leading universities.

Every crypto article makes the same vague claims about the potential of non-specific blockchain technology. I'm surprised there was no mention of replacing Visa in this one as well.

almostApatriot1··on Amazon to Build Second HQ in North America
counterpoint: How many developers will move to Ohio to work for Amazon?
almostApatriot1··on Facebook recruiting and Unix systems
I disagree. There are probably 100 Stanley's in line for these positions and the recruiter is helping to weed out the smug ones. Part of his job.
almostApatriot1··on Central Banks Can’t Ignore the Cryptocurrency Boom
How many more blockchain "hype" articles do we have to go through before we get one about an actual product that people use to do something with other than speculate on value?
almostApatriot1··on Bitcoin Surpasses $4,000, Reaches Another Milestone
consider some of the up and coming alt coins instead. you can triple your investment in a week. Very unlikely with bitcoin.
almostApatriot1··on Thanks to Venmo, We Now All Know How Cheap Our Friends Are
I've heard there's a West Coast/East Coast divide when it comes to Venmo with it being much more popular on the east coast.
almostApatriot1··on Yellowstone Bears Eat 40K Moths a Day in August
there was a good issue of National Geographic dedicated to Yellowstone that covered this last year:

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2016/05/yellowsto...

Basically, the grizzlies there build up on moths and nuts. The moths are 65% body fat.

almostApatriot1··on Yellowstone Bears Eat 40K Moths a Day in August
the moths hide under rocks during the day because it is too hot
almostApatriot1··on Raising a Truly Bilingual Child
Spoken languages are much more complex than programming ones, and the vocabularies are immense. You're talking about 200K+ words in English alone.
almostApatriot1··on What is an Initial Coin Offering and How Does it Work?
He is 'invested' in a lot of these coins though. Seems to be able to own them before they ico. HMMM
almostApatriot1··on A Mathematician's Secret: We're Not All Geniuses
I regret not getting more into Math in college; only got as far as Linear Algebra even though I was pretty good at it, even relative to people in the class. For some reason, I did believe you had to be really exceptional to major in Math. I think it was, in part, because there were a couple really talented kids in high school and everyone including the teachers put them on a huge pedestal. I never felt like I measured up, and if you were smart but not the type to dominate math league, something like Chemistry or Biology were more suitable. Having since met many math majors and even phds, I know know my assumption was kind of false. I look at those talented kids; they're doing advanced degrees or research at top tier universities, and I realize that wasn't the route you had to be on. Oh well.
almostApatriot1··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
If 'non-professional' courses are taught well, they can be a huge asset. I personally learned quite a bit from the couple in-depth history courses I took because they taught me how to research, how to understand information, and how to understand the context in which information is presented.
almostApatriot1··on Workers involved in union activities say Tesla is illegally intimidating them
the major appeal of the union is that you can't get fired or laid off. This type of job security is crucial because it gives you massive leverage when it comes to fighting for those other things. No matter how good the pay is, you can probably get better via striking, etc.
