tom at almostobsolete net

http://almostobsolete.net/ (Geeky website stuff) http://tomparslow.co.uk/ (Freelancer portfolio stuff)

I'm a freelance programmer in Brighton in the UK. I work in lots of languages but I seem to use Python and JavaScript the most. I spend most of my time working from a Brighton co-working space called The Skiff (http://theskiff.org/) which is very nice.

I was on Twitter @almostobsolete but who uses Twitter anymore?

Find me on Mastodon at @almostobsolete@mastodon.me.uk or on Bluesky at https://bsky.app/profile/almostobsolete.net

almost··on JSON Patch – a format for describing changes to a JSON document
That would be really useful for some things. Quite a burden to put on the library implementors though!
almost··on JSON Patch – a format for describing changes to a JSON document
This is what people often do apart from the last point (no undefined in JSON, and by definition anything you could choose here would conflict with valid values). This works well for a lot of use cases but can't express everything you might want to do with something like JSON-Patch.
almost··on Shall we fork Debian?
> only few of us have the time and patience to interact with Debian on a voluntary basis.

This might present a problem if they actually do try and fork it. I imagine it would take more time a patience to run a competing fork than to interact with current Debian.

Not that a fork is necessarily the wrong thing to do if your ideas of what Debian should be differ enough from where it's going. It's just that it sounds like it would be a fair amount of work :)

But ECMAScript is a mouthful to say and sounds a bit like a skin condition, I don't think that's ever going to become the common name people use for it.

almost··on USBCondom
I don't think you could make a IP firewall that enforced read-only either, at least not in a general case.
almost··on USBCondom
It's the fact that you're using the same cable to charge and for data (which is also one of the things that makes USB really useful), now add that the devices tend to not to be hugely secure and to just trust whatever they've plugged into (or at least trust after popping up an easy to miss dialog) and you have a (potential) problem.
almost··on USBCondom
Enabling for read-only in the general case simply wouldn't be possible. The device would have to know every USB protocol that could possibly be spoken and which commands are for reading and which for writing (and what to do with commands that do both).

You could maybe make now that only worked for USB storage devices and only allowed reading, but it would likely be complex and have other downsides (lack of performance and compatability issues probably) that would make it not worth it.

almost··on USBCondom
You can get a certain amount of power from USB without a data connection but to get more (which higher powered devices need to charge quickly or, in some cases, at all) you need to send a data signal to request it. So cutting those wires sort of works but will leave you with slow charging for some devices and no charging for a few others.

SEEKING WORK - Brighton, UK. London, UK. Remote.

Freelance developer based in Brighton in the UK (50 minutes from London). I am flexible, resourceful and reliable and I can help you turn your ideas into reality. I can build mobile and web apps as well as fun things involving custom hardware.

I'm available to do work myself but I also have some great people I work with if you need things quicker or with an even wider range of skills.

I work a lot with Python (often with Django) and JavaScript (Node.JS and browser) to build rich client browser based and mobile apps. I also do hardware based projects, I have experience with coding in Assembly and C on various micro controllers and Arduino development.

A very non-exhaustive list of technologies I have built real things with (and enjoyed): Python, JavaScript, Django, Node.JS, Backbone.JS, AngularJS, OpenCV, D3.js, Arduino.

See my portfolio site at http://tomparslow.co.uk for an internet controlled football playing robot and various Python, JavaScript and hardware projects that I've worked on.

Some fun stuff I've made recently:

- A solver written in Haskell for the regular expression crossword puzzle that was going round recently https://github.com/almost/regex-crossword-solver

- An open source JavaScript library I wrote: https://github.com/dharmafly/jsonpatch.js

- The Amazon Glacier support I contributed to Boto (popular Python library): https://github.com/almost/boto/tree/glacier/boto/glacier

I'd love to talk about your project. Please do get in touch!

Hi there, I hadn't seen wepay before and it looks really interesting. Do you have a page that sets out exactly what risks there are when building a marketplace with your system? I see that you guys say you protect from fraud with an anti-fraud system but presumably fraud will happen sometimes and I'm wondering who gets the bill when it does.

almost··on Don’t drown in email: How to use Gmail more efficiently
This is very similar to the workflow I use with gmail. I use a slightly different means to achieve it though, I use Active Inbox (http://activeinboxhq.com) which is a plugin for Gmail. It helps with GTD stuff by giving "Statuses" such as Action, Waiting On and Some Day to messages (they're just labels underneath but it gives them a nice UI) and I use it to display my actioned messages next to my inbox via a feature called Radar.

That's all well and good but so far it's only what the author has done (but with, IMHO, a nicer and easier to use UI). What Active Inbox does that isn't possible without a plugin is it adds notes and "next steps" to emails, it's easiest to explain with a screenshot:

http://awesomescreenshot.com/08225ii5e9

Full disclaimer: I have been paid to add features to Active Inbox (including some of the ones I've mentioned and very cool upcoming keyboard control thingy) but I was a happy customer before that happened.
