alistproducer2··on Facebook Gave Device Makers Deep Access to Data on Users and Friends
This is very different than scraping html. Facebook has obviously been lying about 3ed party data access.

This comment is incoherent, at best, and it says a lot about how far the HN community has sunk that it is the top comment. "------ derangement" syndrome is a common phrase used on lots of political blogs that also specialize in nonsensical arguments and don't seem to care that entities in power lie through their teeth.

alistproducer2··on The Growing Emptiness of the “Star Wars” Universe
SW always felt empty to me. Where star trek always dealt with deep philosophical questions of humanism, consciousness, sentience, and took scientific plausibility seriously SW dealt with very shallow concepts and eschewed scientific realism in favor of hyper space or whatever. Just not nearly as interesting.
alistproducer2··on Learn cryptographic engineering by example
I would like more description in the main readme. Tell me a little about what kind of skills and knowledge will be gained by going through the exercises.
alistproducer2··on America has a truck driver shortage
They are terrible jobs. Years ago I had a class B and drove dial-a-ride buses. All-in-all it wasn't a terrible job because I got frequent breaks between passengers and could get out of the truck on those breaks and hang out at a mall or get something to eat. My counterparts that drove the city buses had to stay in their seat for 8 hours driving in circles around town.

The other thing that people don't realize about those kind of jobs is, for men at least, they are very hard on your prostate. Sitting for such long periods can cause it to swell leading to prosatitus along with a whole host of other bad health effects. All that being said, our jobs were cake compared to long haulers. You would need to pay people $120-150k before you could get a consistent hiring pool.

alistproducer2··on How Amazon Plans To Use Whole Foods to Dominate the Retail Industry
you mean, carrier subsidization worked for the iphone.
alistproducer2··on How Amazon Plans To Use Whole Foods to Dominate the Retail Industry
I see what you're saying but I still think a more accessible store with more economically diverse location (most WF were built where could afford to shop there) would've been a better move. It would've put Amazon in the heart of more communities. Remember Walmart started by catering to poor people and it turned out to be the right decision. I'm not so sure starting out catering to rich people is going to be the right decision in the long run.
alistproducer2··on How Amazon Plans To Use Whole Foods to Dominate the Retail Industry
They should've bought Kroger if that was their intent. WF is too expensive for like 80% of the U.S population.
alistproducer2··on Amazon device recorded private conversation, sent it out to random contact
I've said it before, but this solidifies it for me - I'm never installing a internet enabled hot mic in my home. I'd rather spend the 2 seconds finding the song on my phone.
alistproducer2··on Bitcoin Gold Hit by Double Spend Attack, Exchanges Lose Millions
What's interesting to me is that the bit game theory that is supposed to make such an attack unprofitable seems not to be holding here. Supposedly the idea that the blockchain was insecure would devalue the coin to such a degree as to disincentive people from attempting these sorts of attacks. I see virtually no movement in the price of BTG and relatively little in XVG (also attacked this week). If anything, the fact that the chain's integrity can be compromised and nothing happens appears to undermine a core assumption of Nakamoto consensus.
alistproducer2··on Reddit's redesign increases power usage of user's devices
After a bunch of back tracking on his much I hate site redesigns I try to give them a chance but this one really takes away from the experience of using reddit.
alistproducer2··on Show HN: A complete Bash parser in JavaScript transpiled from Go
Hilarious because it's true. This is my favorite comment of the day.
alistproducer2··on Senate votes to reinstate net neutrality
I am on the one hand happy to hear about this, but I couldn't help but laugh at the way it was reported on NPR. They said Democrats see this as an issue that can bring voters to the polls. I immediately thought of how few people even know what the heck net neutrality is (about 1 in 4 [0]). Either NPR is making stuff up or the Democrats are seriously in need of some new advice. alistproducer2··on A pure JavaScript implementation of Git for Node and browsers
I really have to second this. I am an avid source reader and when the project is in JS, dart, php, python and to some extent go it's really easy to quickly grok what is happening. C++, Java, Rust - not so much. Some of it has to with the syntax itself but often it has to do with how much indirection and decomposition is standard practice in the language. If I have to jump around to 5 files to see what a single function is doing, it's hard to grasp the bigger picture.
alistproducer2··on Jails are replacing visits with video calls–inmates and families hate it
This is a [better worded] version of what I came to post. America will need to completely overhaul its system of fovernment before this begins to change.
alistproducer2··on SEC filing suggests MoviePass’ time is running out
File this under: DUH!!!! This service never had a chance in hell at becoming profitable. Pretty sad that so much money is thrown at obviously trash ideas like this. I'm pretty sure that money would be better spent funding companies that are working to solve real problems.

I'm just sad I didn't sign up to blow through some of that sweet, sweet free VC money myself.

alistproducer2··on NSA collected 500M U.S. call records in 2017, a sharp rise: official report
This should be downvoted to oblivion. The only folks I've ever heard say black people's (we're not "blacks" BTW, we are actually people) problems are attributable to our culture ate racist shitbags. In order to believe that black people have some intrinsic culture of self destruction one would have to believe that culture evolves in some sort of vacuum. This couldn't be further from the truth when talking about African Americans. Black people have never been left to our own devices in this country. The government itself encoded ways to fuck with us and or minds from the very inception of this nation.

Even after we were freed there was Jim crow and the peonage system (I'm sure you'll have to look that up). Even after Jim crow there was red lining.

You don't have to be a history major to know that what your said is beyond dumb. I seriously hope you put a little more thought into the things you believe going forward.

alistproducer2··on Russian spy boasts the Internet belongs to the Americans, the blockchain is ours
If a public blockchain can belong to a single entity than it really isn't satisfying the moat sacred responsibility of a blockchain: to be trustless.

The fact that the times ran with this story despite the headline meaning very little just shows how hollow so much journalism is.

alistproducer2··on Health dangers of sleep deprivation
This is built on the premise that the modern 8 hour night is settled science. To my knowledge this isn't the case. I'm not saying that depriving yourself of sleep when you're tired is good, but I'm not so sure this should be taken with more than a grain of salt.
alistproducer2··on Spaceflight from Super-Earths is difficult
That was a good read. Thanks
alistproducer2··on Spaceflight from Super-Earths is difficult
so are you saying that even though I could escape Earth's gravity going at sub-orbital velocities that I would still need to be going fast enough to avoid being pulled into the sun?
alistproducer2··on Spaceflight from Super-Earths is difficult
This is what I was getting at. The article mentions escaping a planet's gravity, not orbiting it.
alistproducer2··on Spaceflight from Super-Earths is difficult
Can someone elaborate on why escaping a planet's gravity is about velocity and not just attaining a certain height from the surface? More concretely, why isn't getting to space as easy as taking a balloon to a certain height?
alistproducer2··on Amazon to increase fee of prime from $99 to $119 in U.S
Source?
alistproducer2··on CIA Files Prove America Helped Saddam as He Gassed Iran (2013)
I couldn't help but hearing a loud "duh" in my head when I read the headline. The issue is that one can safely assume that most people don't know this and when confronted with such facts, their brains discard them due to the cognitive dissonance created.
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: Effective methods to fight depression?
I like to say that when you're feeling crappy, think of the one thing you feel least like doing and then do it. When I'm feeling down the last thing I want to do is exercise but, honestly, it's the best remedy for me. I find that diet has a lot to do with it as well. I avoid heavy foods and big meals in general as the lethargy felt afterwards definitely contributes to feeling down.
alistproducer2··on Finland is scrapping plans to extend its basic income project
I will concur with this based on my own anecdotal evidence. I know someone who has a good paying job that gives them nothing to do and they have struggled with depression ever since taking the position.
alistproducer2··on Police Say Video Shows Woman Stepped Suddenly in Front of Self-Driving Uber
If they are just robot versions of humans then I would argue they are far too underdeveloped to be on real roads with real people.
alistproducer2··on The Problem with #DeleteFacebook
>Deleting Facebook is privilege. The company has become so good at the many things it does that for lots of people, leaving the service would be a self-harming act.

It's hard to believe this was written with a straight face

>I’ve lost touch with friends. I don’t go out much anymore and don’t know when cool things I might like to go to are happening. I’m pretty much not a part of any scene anymore. I don’t know when old friends are in town I’d love to see.

These people aren't really your friends

alistproducer2··on Police Say Video Shows Woman Stepped Suddenly in Front of Self-Driving Uber
Call me crazy but isn't a big part of the promise of these systems supposed to be they see things humans wouldn't or couldn't? If they're just as surprised as the human behind the wheel, that feels like a problem.
