alistproducer2··on What If Amazon.com Actually Is a Horrible Website?
My biggest complaint with Amazon is the site is slow even on my powerful desktop.
alistproducer2··on Tumblr was removed from Apple’s App Store over child pornography issues
exactly. there's no way I'm going to downloading, much less uploading "unwanted material" anywhere. no thanks.
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: How to deal with incompetent people
so true lol.
alistproducer2··on Tumblr was removed from Apple’s App Store over child pornography issues
There are a lot of weird quirks with Tumblr that I don't understand like how some pages will only open up in the dashboard.
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: How to deal with incompetent people
There's so much wisdom in the post.

>The business is almost never paying to you clean up technical debt. They are paying you to generate revenue (or save costs). Period.

So true. Once you're in enterprise nobody cares that you wrote the connection pool yourself (which I did and nobody gave a darn). I did 5 years in enterprise and decided that was enough for a lifetime.

>Nobody gets credit for building a system that never goes down.

This happened to me. I designed and wrote a subsystem that is used by every GM dealership around the world and that thing never went down meanwhile my colleagues project was always down yet folks from the other team were the ones that got promoted.

alistproducer2··on Ask HN: How to deal with incompetent people
The OP never made the case that the person was incompetent though. I'm not seeing any red flags other than the OPs resentment. I understand where he's coming from. It's a struggle that many technical-minded folks go through in a business environment. When "I just wanna build cool stuff" clashes with "How do we manage resources efficiently to meet the deadline?"
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: How to deal with incompetent people
I worked at a fortune 500 where IT was a support role and we had lots of people who were not that technically proficient. I really did have to deal with people who were incompetent programmers. Rookie mistake all over the place. Global variables in JavaScript. Check. Not using version control. Check.

What you describe is not incompetence at all. It just sounds like this person has aspirations for management and you don't. Personally, I believe that it's best to lead from the front meaning that one should demonstrate to the people he/she is trying to lead that one really knows their stuff.

That being said, it sounds like now this person actually is responsible for managing you now so it appears their tactics paid off. Unless this person is asking you to write bad code or implement designs that don't make sense, there's really no issue other than your resentment towards this person. you got to let it go. That stuff is poison.

I'm always surprised that these web 2.0 sites don't pay people to surf and flag content. It doesn't take much google-fu to find all sorts of stuff on the clearnet that shouldn't be there. I understand that removing offending stuff from Google search itself is very difficult but the walled garden sites like tumblr are much easier as most of the offending stuff is usually linked together by repost and/or likes. Find one page doing something it shouldn't and follow the likes and reposts down the rabbit hole flagging and removing as you go along.
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: Any ICO that actually delivers what it promises?

alistproducer2··on SEC settles with EtherDelta founder for running an unlicensed exchange [pdf]
During the boom, I was really glad that ED was around when I wanted to make large buys because it eliminated counter-party risk. With regular exchanges it was common to have withdrawals halted or have deposits not show up for hours with no support, if they showed up t all. Eventually they couldn't handle the volume and it fell apart but when it worked it was a godsend
alistproducer2··on Amazon HQ2: Advanced talks about second headquarters in Northern Virginia
No thanks.
alistproducer2··on Kids’ Apps Are Crammed With Ads
Your strategy pretty much mirrors mine exactly. with a few exceptions. The grandparents got my son a Leap Pad, which we let him play a couple hours on weekends and they play iPad games when they're over the grandparent's when they visit once a week.

I've noticed the same things as you when my kids watch ads at the grandparent's. Their reactions show advertising to children for exactly what it is - taking advantage of young minds that cannot defend themselves.

We have a smart TV that has it's network access controlled by my router that limits their screen time. My daughter has a clam shell phone to call us in case of emergency but neither child will never have a smart phone as long as they're in my house.

I've plainly told the wife's family do not buy my kids any more technology without asking us first because it will end up in the garbage. I don't accept the opinion that these technologies are benign, especially from people like my wife's family who have never actually given the subject any serious or considered thought.

alistproducer2··on Stephen Hawking’s Final Paper: How to Escape from a Black Hole
It's not magic man. You haven't studied and pondered these concepts for decades, as Hawking and his peers have. I love science but let's tone down the intelligence and hero worship a bit.
alistproducer2··on Coinbase is launching support for the USDC stablecoin
This is wrong on several levels. Decentralization was not for transactions, it is for censorship resistance. These exchange stable coins fail this requirement. As anyone who has been licked out of an exchange account knows, your funds are never yours when they're on an exchange, much less if the only place to redeem those coins is a place that has locked you out.

Your observations about the community is flawed. Many are just speculators but there are many, like myself, who care about the technology and the core principles. For the latter, you need to be reading a place like bitcointalk.

alistproducer2··on Chrome 69 will keep Google Cookies when you tell it to delete all cookies
Wow,more bad news on the privacy front for Chrome users. I hate to beat a dead horse, but I'm glad I switched back to FF. I'm absolutely loving the multi-account container feature.
alistproducer2··on Why I’m done with Chrome
I've successfully transitioned away from all google products with the exception of Android. It seemed impossible at first but all it took was a rpi3, dd-wrt router, free ddns from freedns.afraid.org, letsencrypt cert and nextcloud.
alistproducer2··on Coursera Machine Learning MOOC by Andrew Ng – Python Programming Assignments
Thumbs done on posting the solutions. That's programming class etiquette 101. From the fact that 64 people upvoted this post, I assume I'm in for some downvotes but what's right is right.
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: How do I choose between a job offer from Google and a promising startup?
I never had such an option but I agree. I picked a big company and after a couple years was able to leave in a much better place, financially, than I went in.
alistproducer2··on Japan to add millions of new nodes to federated Nextcloud network
I just did a switch from oc 10 to nc 13. The docs work fine but are missing some potential table column additions (mostly with apps) which are needed to get things working smoothly. Thankfully the logs will tell you exactly what needs to be done.
alistproducer2··on Japan to add millions of new nodes to federated Nextcloud network
I reached out on to your IRC. I'll help, if I can.
alistproducer2··on Japan to add millions of new nodes to federated Nextcloud network
Where are you hosting your turn server and what software are you using?
alistproducer2··on Japan to add millions of new nodes to federated Nextcloud network
I set up owncloud in an rpi3 a couple months ago but really wasn't satisfied with the lack of apps - the lack of video conferencing to be specific among other things. Switching over to nextcloud was a couple hour affair because I had to rename tables and other nit picks.

I like nextcloud a lot more and it's performance is great, especially since I started using redis (that was a huge pain to install on the rpi though).

I only use Google Drive as an encrypted backup. I've replaced everything it did with nextcloud + collabra + talk.

alistproducer2··on To understand how group dynamics work online, look no further than Numtot
It's funny this article came up today. I was just thinking about how much the 2016 election and the crypto bubble of 2017 changed the dynamics of HN, mostly for the worst. The article mentions scale as being the problem. I think it's more than that as HN was already a large community. I think it comes down to a community reaching a critical mass of people that don't respect the existing rules. At that point, other users, even those that largely respect the existing order, are forced to a.) break the rules to try and combat the newbs or b.) flee. Either way the destruction of what was is complete.
alistproducer2··on A Privacy Bomb Is About to Be Dropped on the California Economy and the Internet
My thoughts exactly. Very poorly constructed article. They definitely buried the lead, which is that the law is reasonable. IMO it's crazy that it's taken this long for real regulation of web 2.0.
alistproducer2··on How a Hacker Proved Cops Used a Stingray to Find Him
I keep JS turned off by default on my phone and make exceptions. Brave browser makes it super easy to do this. Politico was actually the reason I started doing this.
alistproducer2··on Layoffs at Watson Health Reveal IBM’s Problem with AI
I'm in my final week at a large company and so much of this article rings true for me as well. I feel like the structure required to coordinate really big companies has some really negative emergent properties that make it very difficult for such a company to be efficient and innovative.

Look at a company like Google, which, without a doubt, has some of the best engineers in the world. How many false starts and just flat out poorly executed projects/products have they had in the last 10 years? Way more than you would expect from a company that puts such a premium on hiring the best.

alistproducer2··on Firefox is back. It's time to give it a try
I've switched back from chrome for the quantum release. Overall, it works fine 99% of the time but since chrome became the new IE there are a few sites that break in non-webkit browsers. Not enough of an inconvenience to make me go back to handing over all my info to Google.
alistproducer2··on BitTorrent is selling for $140M to Justin Sun and Tron
You clearly are not very knowledgeable about the space. Lots of people got very rich, not just a tiny fraction and doing so didn't require investing in an ico. When I started the meetup, ETH was trading at around $6. You do the math on how much a $2500 position ended up being worth in Dec of 2017. There a ton of legit tech in the space. There's also lots of gold-rush scanners. My 3K to 115K wasn't the result of an ico. I got in well after the ico at $0.05 and it went to $0.11. Had I been smart enough to liquidate at even a $0.09 level I literally could've bought a 2013 limbo (I looked just to torture myself).
alistproducer2··on BitTorrent is selling for $140M to Justin Sun and Tron
I've been a blockchain watcher since 2010. I started (and abondoned) the first Ethereum meetup in ATL. After having several chances to become a blockchain millionaire and staying on the sidelines, I finally dove in 4th quarter of last year. I watched $3k turn into $115,000 in about 3 months, then watched it evaporate back to $3k. Saying I have a few crypto regrets is the understatement of a lifetime. That being said, this space has taught me one of the most valuable business lessons - skeptics stay broke while dreamers and sale people buy lambos.

Whenever webster's gets around to defining "shitcoin" "TRX" should be the first synonym but that hasn't stopped Justin Sun from raking in billions and now buying BitTorrert. Projects putting out products and/or developing hardcore tech like new virtual machines sitting on the sidelines and Justin Sun's are joining the 3 comma club. Capitalism rarely rewards the best and we're just getting to witness this firsthand.

alistproducer2··on Dark Web Drug Vendor Pleads Guilty After Feds Traced His Bitcoin Transactions
Dude's OPSEC game was pretty weak. If you're going to do stuff that could get you imprisoned for life, you'd think you would be more thorough.
