alistproducer2··on Ask HN: How do you trust a developer to develop a lucrative idea?
I don't mean this to belittle you but good ideas are a dime-a-dozen. As a person who both has good ideas and knows how to code I can tell you, form experience, executing a good idea is extremely hard. I'm not just talking about the code. The code is the second easiest part. The one where almost everyone trips up is business development and marketing.

Finding a coder who can solve the bizdev rubicks cube is as rare as a bizdev guy who can build an MVP on his/her own.

TL;DR no freelance coder is going to be able to execute both the code and the business plan, so don't worry. If they were that good, they'd already be rich and wouldn't be soliciting freelance gigs.

alistproducer2··on Show HN: Chrome Extension to Filter HN Stories by Keyword
Version < 0.4 have a bug that filters comments containing words on naughty list. 0.4 has been pushed to webstore but it will take a minute to propagate. If you want fixed version now, pull it from github.

Although filtering out comments could be a feature and not a bug, amiright?

alistproducer2··on Show HN: Chrome Extension to Filter HN Stories by Keyword
Dev Here:

I made this because I'm tired of seeing political flame-stories on here and I hate flagging them or, even worse, going in the threads to complain about them.

With this extension you can make a comma-separated list of words that when matched within a headline, the link is removed from the page before you ever see it.

You can check the console to see what stories are being removed. It's open source so feel free to fork, customize, contribute or whatever.

It can be used to filter anything, so if you can't stand to see another "JavaScript" or "Python" story, you can block those too.

alistproducer2··on Ask HN: Anyone have a reference for HN REST end-points?
Thanks for the information.
alistproducer2··on Netflix Earnings Are Driven by Investment in Original Content
I'm going to have to agree. I recently cut the cord and now when I watch network TV (via my DTV tuner) commercials feel really jarring. One of the reasons I cut the cord and got off social media is I began to feel as though many of my thoughts were not my own anymore because I was subjecting myself to daily brainwashing . the further away from those services I get, the more abnormal they seem.
alistproducer2··on A Story of a Fraudulent Coder
Does it really work like that in the Valley? I might have to come out there. Where I'm at, it's mostly big established fortune 5's. they hire they're fair share of idiots with degrees but I'm not sure you'd be able to make it by outsourcing the Fiverr.
alistproducer2··on To Obama with Love, and Hate, and Desperation
I seriously hate political articles on HN. There are enough places in the net where you can finger-argue with strangers. Can't we just let HN be a place where we come to learn an talk about tech an tech business?
alistproducer2··on How I got my attention back
Same here. I don't miss Facebook at all. I also cut the cord around the same time and now watching TV feels so weird because of the commercials.
alistproducer2··on WorldBrain - Full-text search your browsing history, bookmarks and PDFs
I'm curious about the organizational aspect of your project. that's a nut I've yet to crack. what was your strategy in building a community around your project?
alistproducer2··on WorldBrain - Full-text search your browsing history, bookmarks and PDFs
This is about the 3rd or 4th attempt at this idea since I attempted it. My effort was moderately successful:

http://lifehacker.com/deeper-history-searches-the-contents-o...

http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/chrome-deeper-history/

That being said, there are serious security concerns with kind of project (which is why I stopped development) and likely why full text search was taken out of Chrome by google years ago. It is not insurmountable, by any means, but I didn't like the idea of know that if I was successful and reached a very large audience that I might also be responsible for serious identify theft and other hacks.

I'll also point out that I did collect usage stats for a time, and they were horrific. At my peak I had ~5000 installs and out of those 5k something like 3-5 searches/day was the norm.

I would be happy to share my experience with the dev team. I still have code that may be of use as well.

alistproducer2··on PhantomJS 2.5.0 beta
I got 2.1.1 working on my raspberry pi. The binary I have is an arm build but I can confirm that the issue can be solved by editing the binary as detailed in https://gist.github.com/neuro-sys/41e368839a9b20dafb34

I forked the binary from https://mecrazy.net/2016/06/06/i-built-phantomjs-2-1-1-for-r...

it's available here: https://github.com/ShamariFeaster/phantomjs-binaries

alistproducer2··on The Problem with AMP
There's not a faster way, that I'm aware of. That being said, I'm not exaggerating when I say the overwhelming majority of pages just work and the 5-10% that don't you can add them to the exception list (meaning they will run JavaScript) so you won't have to go through those 8 clicks every time.

give a try for a day or so. Once I did, I can't go back to keeping it on because the web seems so slow by comparison.

alistproducer2··on The Problem with AMP
I make my own amp pages by keeping JavaScript turned off on my phone. 95℅ of pages work and load instantly. Those that don't, I turn on JavaScript. If I go to those pages a lot I add them to my exception list. Sorry but I'm not an amp believer.
alistproducer2··on Flat Pack Chainless Bicycle from IKEA
>completely unsafe to ride at any speed

I can attest this is not the case. All I,and everyone who are not cyclists, have ever rode are cheap Wal-Mart bikes. Even when I used to do stupid stuff like jump them and fly down hills, I've never had a structural failure occur.

alistproducer2··on Cultural differences may leave their mark on DNA
It's pretty clear you skimmed the article and read from it what you wanted, instead of what it actually said. I read through the responses and you've been pretty thoroughly proven wrong so I won't reiterate the points.

Constructively, try not to see news as a chance to reinforce your existing views. Try and do the opposite. try to expand your world view.

alistproducer2··on Ask HN: Do you believe the Russia hacking story?
Is this a serious question?
alistproducer2··on What science says about naming in programming
I could see this being an eclipse or notepad++ plug in.
alistproducer2··on What science says about naming in programming
upvote for the interesting idea. To your knowledge is there any IDE out there with such a feature?
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: Do you believe the Russia hacking story?
How much one decides to believe a particular statement from organizations that claim never to be able to provide proof is entirely dependent on one's need for that statement to be true. If that statement provides for the destruction of "the other side" people are much more likely to believe it.

>everything the CIA says or asserts is now somehow in question

The CIA is an agency where everyone is taught to lie. They of course call it something else, tradcecraft, but they are, by profession, liars. A good spy knows to trust no one, especially not other spies.

alistproducer2··on Ask HN: Will automation generate social massive protests?
Hypernormalisation is an awesome documentary that actually covers this subject. If you've got a couple hours to kill I highly recommend it.

It can be watched on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fny99f8amM

alistproducer2··on Ask HN: Do you believe the Russia hacking story?
Watching so-called "liberals" defending the CIA is really the icing on the cake for the last 8 years. The tribalism in this country transcends principles. As long as your team is the one winning, it doesn't matter what it does. If your team is losing, no alliance is too strange, no principle is too important to be cast aside in pursuit of destroying the enemy.

Do I like Donold Trump? Not a chance. Does my dislike of Trump make me more conducive to believe spies and spooks more than I did before November? Not really.

alistproducer2··on Show HN: Ballotter, an Online Video Debating Platform for Our Discussions
I'm sorry to hear it's closed source. Open sourcing it could go a long way to helping get the word out. I'll check it out.
alistproducer2··on Show HN: Ballotter, an Online Video Debating Platform for Our Discussions
I felt like webrtc is pretty much the only option as a desktop client. I hope you get it fixed soon. Also is your code OSS?
alistproducer2··on Show HN: Ballotter, an Online Video Debating Platform for Our Discussions
I had literally the same idea. I had actually started researching webrtc. the tech looked a little fragile so I decided not to go forward. I hope you can work out your kinks and get it running, because I would be interested in giving it a go. It's like trying out my idea without putting in any of the work!
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: Are there any solid arguments against SPAs in 2017?
Don't use a SPA if you intend to get a lot of mobile traffic and/or all your site does is render articles or other text-based content.
alistproducer2··on Etherplay: Play Skill Games on Ethereum
I feel exactly the way you do. I was initially seduced by Ethereum. So much so I actually read the white paper...all of it and started an Eth meetup. After a few meetings of being the only skeptic in the room, I realized the community's problem is not the tech - it's the community. The cryptocurrency world (at least the one I encountered) is a huge echo chamber filled with people who genuinely believe they are smarter than everyone else. It also only attracts a certain type of person so there is little diversity of thought. For example, there are basically 0 people in that world that think it's necessary to dumb UX down (like hiding crazy hash addresses and not denominating things to 13 decimal places) so it can be used by non-technical folks.

Eth's problem is exactly what you said: it's a solution desperately in search of a problem. I believe there are legitimate reasons to displace decentralized systems, but the market just isn't there yet. The value add just isn't there for anyone but a specific kind of nerd.

alistproducer2··on From 'No Way,' to Global Success: The Journey of GM's Design Chief
While I really dig the exterior design of the newer Cadillac's, the interior dimension and design are absolutely terrible. This is evidenced by the fact that Cadillac is, by far, GM's poorest performing brand.

The interiors are monuments to claustrophobic design and wasted space. I'm not tall and my head almost touches the ceiling of their latest models.

alistproducer2··on Operational calculus on programming spaces and generalized tensor networks
As a wannabe teacher, I like to think I'm pretty good at condensing complicated information. It's nice to know I will got it :)
alistproducer2··on Tips for Reading Code (2014)
I keep JavaScript if on mobile and around 95% of sites still work. This one not so much. If your site is just text please dispense with all the JavaScript.
alistproducer2··on Operational calculus on programming spaces and generalized tensor networks
I could be [very] wrong but my read of the practical use of this is that it creates a really complicated-mathey AST that allows for adaptation of a program to different forms. The paper notes several times how a program could be adapted for maximum efficiency on different hardware than it was originally written for. I'm certain there a bunch more to it, but that was all I was able to grasp.
