alfor··on Ask HN: What movies changed your perception of reality or life?
Yes, it's funny. You can't be funny without telling the truth.
alfor··on An electric new era for Atlas
why?

FSD is based on neural net so is Optimus vision

alfor··on Dubai's Floods Weren't Caused by Cloud Seeding
It help create tiny droplets that grow as they fall.
alfor··on An electric new era for Atlas
I too think it's a distraction too but it's won't be the limiting factor. Planes don't flap their wings, cars don't have legs yet are faster and more powerfull than animals.

The important part lagging is the brain. Understanding the world, reacting to it learning. Even an ant can navigate the world pick-up objects and do tasks.

alfor··on Ask HN: What movies changed your perception of reality or life?
If you live your whole life in the blue tribe, if your state is a blue tribe breaking out of it and understanding the world from the other side is liberation.

Then yes after that we need a bit of both, both sides have their pathologies.

We live in a narative whether we like it or not, but once we understand that we can more easily take control of it.

alfor··on Ask HN: What movies changed your perception of reality or life?
I started and it was ad hominem right at the start. So I judged it was not worth watching the whole thing.

Is there a section I should watch?

What are the arguments against him?

I have watched all his university class and most of his talk, 100's of hours of material. I am very familiar with his positions.

But when I first heard about him I had a strong reaction against his positions and his complicated language. I was primed by CBC to hate him and I was trying to find a good reason. At the same time my cursiosity was activated so I watch him more and understood more and more.

So yes, he is not easy to understand, it take a lot of effort but it's been worth it for me.

alfor··on NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism
True, it one of the rare place where there is intelligent discussion that pop from time to time.

I find that the left mob is still very present and ready to shut down fast.

As it's a place of early adopters and visionary what we see here usualy get reflected back in other places one to many years later.

I see a shift toward conservatives values is happening here too that might then progress toward other places reddit, wikipedia, mass media, etc.

Both vision have their places and are necessary. The world is changing crazy fast so we need the progressives to adapt at the same time changing everything is destructive so we need to also save and cherish what work and has for a long time.

As long as the conversation is open there is hope.

alfor··on An electric new era for Atlas
Funny, just after the all electric Optimus.

For sure they have been working on this for a long time.

I predict that they will also move toward neural nets for all the vision, control and understanding of the world (like Tesla)

Have you ever voted conservative? Do you have friends that vote conservative?

Do you have collegues that vote conservative.

Is it possible you are in the bubble?

Just here in HN is progressive to ultra progressive. Any mention of the other side is a sure way to get downvoted to oblivion.

alfor··on Ask HN: Is RAG the Future of LLMs?
Does the LLM get trained as the database get builded?

As you train a model it should build it's knowledge database at the same time. I guess that's how it work?

When an LLM get trained on next word guessing, can it search the web to improve his results?

alfor··on Ask HN: What movies changed your perception of reality or life?
Either he has something interesting to say but it take some effort to understand or you are right.

Choose your adventure

alfor··on Ask HN: What movies changed your perception of reality or life?
It's not very convincing.

JBP is an academic and yes he is a bit hard to understand, that doesn't mean that it's nonsense, just that it will take more time to grasp his positions.

You can start with his university class in psycology: personality and transformation, I think it's the easiest starting point.

Then map of meaning.

I much prefer his lectures, live talks and podcast to the writings that are contrived and a bit overworked to my taste.

alfor··on Ask HN: What movies changed your perception of reality or life?
Not a movie but the biblical lectures of Jordan Peterson.

Made me start to understand the bible and christianity from a scientific perspective.

From there reading the bible understanding more about the roots of our culture and seing the constant propaganda against it in the media, the movies, etc.

It's been eye opening.

Then you can read Atlass shrugged and live not by lies.

I used to be very progressive, left leaning, not anymore.

alfor··on Ask HN: What movies changed your perception of reality or life?
Funny, I think is it mostly seen as the opposite.

That the media and government create a propaganda narative, a fake reality we live in.

The red pill has become a symbol of breaking out of all the progressives lies.

alfor··on Ask HN: Most efficient way to fine-tune an LLM in 2024?
Can consumer systems like the rtx3090 or 4X rtx3090 achieve something?

Have you seen benchmarks

alfor··on Python Cloudflare Workers
I don't see how people will start using a completely new way python is running.

If you are just experimenting and having fun, sure. But would you bet your company or many many months of developpement on this? What happen if you get random bugs?

The advantage need to be extremely high to make it worth it. Maybe for specialized work that need to happen at the edge and then, why not use js instead that is the bedrock of this implementation?

alfor··on Florida's DeSantis signs law restricting social media for people under 16
One smugled magazine in the 90' are now replaced with infinite video of increasing hardcore stuff delivered to the phone in the bedroom.
alfor··on Florida's DeSantis signs law restricting social media for people under 16
Just look at birth rate, depression, etc.

You will see we are in a dead end.

I don't think this law will change the trend unless there is major concerted effort.

Boys have access to so much porn and gaming that they are checking out of real life. Girls have their problems too with social media.

alfor··on Ask HN: Tips to get started on my own server
Try the Caprover on digital ocean to try things out.

This will save you ton of time, there is a lot of application already packaged with docker there and you can add your own. What is great about this is that nginx proxing and other bits are already working together to give a working system. The port mapping, the domain/subdomain managing, https with certificate, etc. Application are installed in one click and are configured mostly with env vars.

Then dig into it with docker or install one ubuntu system and install stuff and see how to configure, etc.

My suggestion is to try a religious conversion to christianity. I know it sound weird, but we all live in a story and she relive the same story over and over in her dreams and in real life.

Christianity will help her make sense of what happenend and will help her get over it. She will have a place to put evil and a place to put good and she will be slowly be able to fix the direction of her mind.

She can search for scripture that speak around what happened to her and see what she can do about it. She will ask for help to go past her trauma.

I tought all my life that it was supersitious nonsense (scientific atheist) but I found out that I was wrong. We have no choice, we are religious by nature. Without a solid faith we are free floating, anxious, depressed, confused and stuck in loops.

alfor··on The Obscene Energy Demands of A.I
I agree with you too.

It's much easier to destroy and to enslave than to create something good. There I was thinking of the possible positive vs electricity cost.

Yes we might doom us all with AI. I hope the good win, wild time.

alfor··on The Obscene Energy Demands of A.I
My prediction: the advance of tech by AI will far surpasse what it consume in energy.

To look at the energy consumption of current model is extremely short sighted. If AI create a new material, a new solar cell, advance fusion reactor is all of humanity that jump forward.

Furthermore new generation of AI accelerators and new algorithms will improve efficiency by order of magnitute, it's still early days.

alfor··on HPV vaccine study finds zero cases of cervical cancer among women vaccinated <14
*Assuming the vaccine has zero risk and don't cause other problems.
alfor··on HPV vaccine study finds zero cases of cervical cancer among women vaccinated <14
I don't know, we don't know, that's the point.

They claim a victory (no cancer in some conditions) But don't show the all cause mortality for same sample.

You should be skeptical of a study not showing all causes mortality on their own sample. It's very easy to do, you count the dead and living for both samples at the end of the experiment. Yet, they don't. Weird isn't?

alfor··on HPV vaccine study finds zero cases of cervical cancer among women vaccinated <14
Study like this are very good to push government to pay vaccination to all kids as early as possible.

In Québec they did the vaccination to all the kids at 12yo, boys and girls.

alfor··on Lightweight JavaScript Framework Review (For Django Developers)
HTMX is gaining a lot of traction but is barely mentionned.

Seem to be a good pattern of adding what is needed and otherwise keep things as they are.

Do not have a lot of experience with it but I would gladly ditch our vue.js build process and docker image for the little web we actualy need to do.

alfor··on We have surpassed 6 of the 9 planetary boundaries that sustain human life (2023)
Communism is missing in their graph and is at all time high.

I am tired of the attept to use climate change and other metric to push us toward a totalitarian world government. People are waking up to it.

There is no global warming catastrophe.

Solar is on an expodential path, so is EV and other initiatives.

I am way more concerned about the risk of nuclear war (US proxy war created by the democrats), the creation of other virus in labs and the contamination of everything with BPA and forever chemical.

Tech is mostly good, so is freedom and free entreprise.

alfor··on SQLite 3.45 released with JSONB support
In my tests sqlite was around 10X faster than postgres.

That mean that a single cheap server is capable of going very very far in normal web workloads.

I think we often add complexity: virtualisation, cloud, separated db server, horizontal scaling when efficient and simple tech is able to go very very far.

alfor··on Solar will supply almost all growth in U.S. electricity generation through 2025
Parking, flat roof, unprofitable argriculture land, there is plenty of space.
alfor··on Solar will supply almost all growth in U.S. electricity generation through 2025
Solar and batteries are on an expodential path.

The cost is going down so fast it won't make sense to have anything else.

I think that by 2035 most of the transition will be done even if we don't have major new developpement, but if you look at what AI is finding in new materials I think that the next few years are going to be very weird.

Look into Tony Seby, he predicted the current path 10y ago.
