alexsereno··on Meta's new Threads, a rival for X, is now Apple's most downloaded app
Twitter had such a strong and recognizable brand too. Working in payments under the X name or something like that might have made sense, but what a god awful idea to kill core app branding.
alexsereno··on Study: TikTok Global Platform Anomalies Align with CCP Geostrategic Objectives [pdf]
Of course they do, however an important distinction here is that Meta is banned in China and TikTok is not banned here. Both are bad, but Chinese netizens aren’t exposed to one of the two.

China is quite good about filtering out which propaganda interests they want their citizens exposed to, and of course are more active in influencing operations globally as well.

We can argue if that model of propaganda and control is good or not, but regardless they are smart enough to know that they don’t want to open up their youth to US propaganda machines but are happy to have us open ourselves to their propaganda. It’s asymmetrical, and that causes a lot of consternation. It’s also risky.

alexsereno··on French authorities label Vitamin D as endocrine disruptor
It’s really hard to say without bloodwork since unique sun and gut absorption rates plus other things that affect your gut can affect your absorption.
alexsereno··on French authorities label Vitamin D as endocrine disruptor
Edit: sorry this was intended for the parent comment.

It is but K2 absorption is complex as well. It’s not quite as straightforward as something like salt and potassium intake etc.

Additionally there’s just so much about gut health that we operate largely out of ignorance on. Even simple things like the prevalence of intestinal and other parasites in North America etc are tinged with ignorance or bad backing data

alexsereno··on The secretive rise of the 'overemployed'
IDK, I also think a lot of engineers are actually just not good - but the overhiring that happened over the past few years really brought down the overall quality at MANGA. Now you have a bunch of "MANGA level" engineers / other employees who are all mid tier and feel "underemployed" at whatever job they have now. That does play into your easy to game comment.

I say that because I'm aggressively not a good engineer. When I joined FAANG years ago I couldn't get hired as an engineer. I joined the company working in Operations and both myself and that side of the house benefited from me being able to script out automation or describe to internal Eng exactly what needed to be built. I chose to not role as an engineer to work at FAANG.

While there, I watched the quality of hiring erode drastically over the years. With that, came a lot of super mid employees including on the business side who were frankly extremely entitled and felt like they had justified that they were actually great hires because they worked at MANGA. That shift was really quite annoying to be around, since it became a game of B players hiring C players hiring D players.

Leetcode is fucking awful though, I'm confident that if you could solve "hiring incredible engineers" you'd have a great business venture. Also, I don't want to say that the hiring market isn't tougher than before right now, but maybe that it is a good thing that will push qualified engineers to companies that can't pay MANGA salaries and where they'll be very valued.

alexsereno··on The secretive rise of the 'overemployed'
Well that's a different argument but you're totally right. The most "boring" ways to financial freedom are living cheaply and making as much steady income as possible, investing in other revenue generating ventures (like literally things like a washateria, then buy a strip mall, etc.) Starting "a business" for the $$$ as your primary motivator is going to take your focus off of product.
alexsereno··on Current thoughts on social media
Yea mastodon has been totally incredible in my experience following mostly Swift developers. I’d also argue that the slightly higher barrier to entry is more of a feature than a bug since it inherently keeps low effort users out. Lastly I am old enough to remember early Reddit where it was very “technical and confusing” for a lot of people.
alexsereno··on U.S. v. Google
Well yes it’s clearly expensive to support a browser and that’s why they’re trying to make money, but they’re failing miserably to deliver on those other revenue streams and they aren’t keeping up in the browser space. That’s all, if they were developing some business model that worked that would be different. That’s why breaking off googles monopoly would kill them, they are dependent on it
alexsereno··on U.S. v. Google
This is a strong but valid take, Mozilla has a huge focus on getting revenue streams from somewhere, but flubbing it right and left along the way. The consumer might benefit from a better browser but Mozilla has basically decided that that’s not what will drive growth or revenues… not that I think they’re particularly correct about that
alexsereno··on What is narcissism? Science confronts a widely misunderstood phenomenon
You’re actually 100% right about this, there’s a massive reproducibility crisis. But I don’t think it’s fair to put it on the same level as astrology haha

alexsereno··on Show HN: IronIQ, an iOS app for effortless workouts.
Hey! IronIQ is my attempt to make a workout app I’d actually like to use, and I’d really like feedback on it.

Here’s a few features I’ve been particularly fond of:

- [Beta] AI for personalized workout routines

- 2K+ exercises with detailed how-to videos

- Customizable rest timers, even on the Lock Screen

- Track progress with intuitive charts and stats

- Organized UI by day of the week, keeping it simple, also has themes and more little details

- History and routines stored securely on iCloud without any data sharing back to me

- Hassle-free option to buy once and remove ads

Exciting things I’m working on right now:

- AI will actually add a routine to the app for you, not just text, and have more information for help in-workout

- Timed endurance exercises

- Supersets

- Multiple language translations

Hope this project is exciting to more than just me!

alexsereno··on Fidelity deepens valuation cut for Reddit and Discord
Annoyingly they moved into shilling stupid AI ventures which is frustrating a AI has real, legitimate uses in its current form. Now we have a bunch of shills acting like we’ve achieved AGI if only you’d invest in their GPT chatbot
alexsereno··on Reddit App – Suspicious high number of recent 5 star, one word reviews
Both of these are correct, if you use the native API. A lot of apps hide behind their own “are you enjoying” pop up and then only give you the apple API prompt to leave a review if you say yes lol. I also dislike it, and have mine set to not allow in the system settings.

However I also have the native API prompt appear after ~2 weeks of use in my own app, at the end of the day good reviews and actual money to devs is the only way the business works, App Store is super competitive. I’d love to bypass the App Store and not deal with reviews and be able to cleanly offer upgrade pricing!

It’s such a funny idea, comic book villainous.

alexsereno··on Microsoft execs on Apple's music store (2003)
I think the real tell for Apple’s future will be who Tim Cook chooses to replace him. Financially, Apple is incredibly strong. You could argue that operations was Apple’s weakest point when Jobs left, and that Cook was the right choice to cement profitability and the ops side of the business as CEO. Now it’s time for some new product lines to cannibalize existing products and bring the company forward. If Tim picks another business / operations guy to run the company instead of a product person, I do think the product first culture and DNA Jobs left will die out over time.
alexsereno··on There's something off about LED bulbs
Why? That strikes me as odd, since the manufacturer is the one who eats that warranty cost.

alexsereno··on Bad Projection Is Ruining the Movie Theater Experience
Sadly they sold to a hedge fund and quality has been going downhill, but yes, for years Alamo was the only thing that kept me going to theaters. It’s still much better than any competitor though
alexsereno··on School dental program prevents 80% of cavities with non-invasive treatment
Not OP but I have a family member who’s a specialized dentist who’s well regarded in the field and constantly harps on this kind of toothpaste over fluoride. I think fluoride is basically cheap and that’s all
alexsereno··on Sperm counts worldwide are plummeting faster than we thought
It’s going to be a real adjustment for a lot of these people to grasp that young American men are in really difficult situations socially, academically, and that it’s a key factor to underemployment, violence, etc… the concept of men’s health or men suffering feels like an attack to these people instead of a separate legitimate issue to other social topics they find important
alexsereno··on Reddit Chat has been broken for over 2 weeks
They announced they wanted to go public, and now are trying to do everything they can to juice engagement.
alexsereno··on The dissolution of Apple’s legacy design team
He needed to have Fadell around to argue with, but Tim prefers an office style with less tension. Which has been great for shareholders, bad for consumer design tho. It’s hard to know what is more “right” since more people have apple products than ever before, but wow I love my post-Ive Mac a lot more, and design across the board has focused a bit on function w/ Craig getting a bigger role
