alexozer··on Locals reportedly frustrated with Waymo's self-driving cars
Better to annoy with conservative behavior than murder with liberal behavior.
alexozer··on Goodbye VSCode, Hello Emacs Again
I too came to believe that VSCode could be a great end-all-be-all IDE for me, and that I couldn't potentially miss much in the big, bloated "real IDEs".

Fortunately this summer I came to realize that VSCode, at least for non-Javascript/Typescript languages, is laughable compared to the Jetbrains IDEs for Python, C++, Java, etc. Even ignoring all of the extra "features", the Jetbrains IDEs are just so much more intelligent at linting, code completion, and symbol lookup. Vim support is much better too.

I do wonder how WebStorm compares to VSCode; I suspect it may not support as many hip frameworks but would still excel in the aforementioned categories.

alexozer··on What is this Twitter army of Amazon drones cheerfully defending warehouse work?
I think "never attribute to intelligence which can adequately be explained by stupidity" applies here.
alexozer··on On paying for software
Interesting, that Fair Source License seems like the perfect example of how your software can simultaneously be open source software but not free software. It doesn't matter if it's open source if I can't modify it and deploy it to however many computers I want to.
alexozer··on GitLab sees huge spike in project imports
Admit it. If Google bought them instead, there'd be far less freakout. Google is pretty scary, but you have to admit that we still distrust MS with our free software even less.
alexozer··on Getting Google to ban our entire company
> Grandparent gave a ton of reasons, though, why this situation is particularly implausible. Why exactly do you disagree?

None of grandparent's reasons are smoking guns, they're just "things that would fit the conspiracy if it was a conspiracy". The probability that it's fake given those reasons isn't high enough (like by Bayes' Rule) to deem the whole story "definitely implausible".

> "I do not know why Google has a scorched-earth policy when it comes to this kind of stuff, but I fucked up and our boss is looking to migrate away from Google even though we just recently signed on not too long ago."

That seems like something you would definitely overhear your boss talking about if you also heard that they were trying furiously to contact Google.

The best reason it's maybe a conspiracy is that Google would be hesitant to "ban a whole company", but who knows, maybe if the perceived ToS violation appears severe enough (they didn't know OP's persistent piracy was a joke) Google has zero tolerance.

alexozer··on Show HN: HackerForums.co, a forum for the crowd that hangs out on HN
Just a heads up, using an external password manager on Firefox for the login screen is broken. It seems that if the username or password field is selected and then Firefox is unfocused and refocused, the field is no longer selected. Works in Chromium.

alexozer··on Nasa will send helicopter to Mars to test otherworldly flight
All it takes is to land on the side on one rock and it's over. I would say the chance is more like 98% over the span of a few years.
alexozer··on The Many Uses of Org Mode
That does sound nice, but I'm a bit confused about using it for _project documentation_. Are any of these open-source? Although org is plaintext and thus technically cross-editor compatible, it's meant to be edited in Emacs, so would contributors just need to use Emacs?
alexozer··on Gitea: Open source, self-hosted GitHub alternative
Maybe like goatee?
alexozer··on De-Googling my phone
Nice, I've also thought about moving all my notes and todo stuff to Org Mode.

I did figure out a way to sync org mode files between laptop and phone with low latency (unlike with Syncthing) running Unison inside Arch Linux inside Termux, using git to automatically merge conflicts. It's a little crazy, but seems to work? Maybe will do a write-up at some point.

alexozer··on I switched from iPhone to the Pixel 2: One-week report
I recently installed an Arch Linux chroot on my Android phone, full access to the filesystem and all. There's absolutely no way you could do anything like that on iPhone without some serious jailbreaking.
alexozer··on Why is the FB leak getting more attention and momentum that the Equifax hack?
Because it influenced the election in the United States.
alexozer··on Oni: Modern Modal Editing – Powered by Neovim
I do think I might prefer the approach of the asymptotic of development approaching vscode features with a base in pure Vim rather than the asymptotic approaching full Vim compatibility within vscode, and so I really want to like Oni.

What immediately struck me as "this project is not ready to use to actually code in" was trying to scroll with my Macbook's touchpad and it working pretty awfully. It seems like an obvious enough issue that it _has_ to be being worked in, but maybe not and I should report it.

alexozer··on YouTube’s fake views economy
I'm honestly not sure I can trust anything this author says.

In this article he links to another he's written [0] which posits that Professor Jordan Peterson is recruiting depressed men for the alt-right. It's full of nothing but false emotionally-driven insinuations, and is especially ridiculous considering Peterson's very explicit stance against extremist ideologies on either side, including the alt-right.

alexozer··on The antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation
Saw this article and decided to try to roll over my half-phase-out-of-sync horrific sleep schedule by staying awake through the next day. My mind was nowhere near fully functional from the period of 6pm the first day through 11:30pm the next, but I somehow managed to experience a sense of urgency and elatedness I may have forgotten how to feel over the last few years, and got some work done to boot.

Unfortunately I'm back as hopeless as ever today, but I would be willing to bet with a little more discipline it'd be a pretty great way to at the very least quickly restore a sleep-early wake-early sleep schedule.

alexozer··on Announcing TypeScript 2.7
I do very little webdev, but `parcel index.html` seems to be able to do just about anything.
alexozer··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy launch is reportedly set for February 6th
> once a rocket is more than a meter off the ground, it's either going to space or exploding

Unless you're a Grasshopper!

alexozer··on [dead]
Are you saying that we should treat entire classes of modern people differently based on the events involving ancestors with similar superficial characteristics like skin color and sex?

Last I heard, it was best to treat people equally.

alexozer··on “Username or password is incorrect” is bullshit
If you're just trying to find a set of accounts with a weak password, isn't it much more viable to use the sign-in page that shows "invalid password" instead of "invalid username or password" rather than dealing with captchas on the signup page? Assuming you can't just find usernames as public profiles like on GitHub.
alexozer··on F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules
I see. I always thought it was just, "swamps are smelly, okay?"
alexozer··on Canvas Beat
pretty cool! I would appreciate an easier way to turn rings off too
alexozer··on [dead]
Stats, stats, stats. What portion of women in their early twenties who decide they _never_ want children never change their mind? It's perfectly reasonable to assume they aren't the majority, especially given the consequences of assuming so.
alexozer··on New York's Uptown Rats Are Genetically Distinct from Downtown Rats
A few weeks ago there was a post about Crowded Cities, a startup trying to train crows to pick up and throw away cigarette butts in the city for a food reward. I'm sure it'd be harder, but could crows also be incentivized to somehow pick up rats?

alexozer··on Angular It’s You, Not Me – A Breakup Letter
I wouldn't let the HN rabblement get to you too much, I thought it was kind of amusing and silly. There's a huge survivorship bias favoring those who are willing to be vocal about not being able to find humor in certain things. Personifying technology isn't allowed to be funny? I don't buy it. I say, loosen up.
alexozer··on The End of the Social Era Can’t Come Soon Enough
For a while when I was younger I naively thought Facebook would formulate my timeline in such a way that I could keep up with genuinely interesting and special things people who enjoy tech like me think and do, and likewise feel genuinely encouraged to reciprocate occasionally.

Why instead does my timeline have to be so precisely boring, mindless, impersonal, and yet addictive? Maybe because 1) incentive to post is largely motivated by lowest-common-denominator, broadest appeal rather than niche, 2) posting about specialized interests are therefore unincentivized, and 3) such posts from friends produces a positive feedback loop in the rest of the group?

Maybe it'd be worse if Facebook actually worked this way because it would be harder to avoid entirely.

alexozer··on A minimalist guide to tmux
Really not sure what a great prefix for me would be considering my caps lock is escape, not control
alexozer··on Firefox Private Browsing vs. Chrome Incognito: Which Is Faster?
Thank you for the multi-tab tip! I can't tell you how many times I've wrangled with Chrome to move more than one tab into a separate window while my tiling window manager fights to split each tab into a window separately.
alexozer··on Some birds use discarded cigarettes to fumigate their nests
It dispenses in response to cigarettes, not crows (at least after training), so it wouldn't really matter I don't think.
