Ehhh..lots of nuance to this one

alexfromapex··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
The public probably thinks that these companies are getting hacked by "sophisticated hackers" but I'd bet money that they've been hacked via social engineering.
alexfromapex··on People are bad at reporting what they eat. That's a problem for dietary research
I thought this was generally known that people are bad at reporting most things about themselves. It's a good argument in favor of wearables or other smart monitors, if anyone expects to do actual rigorous research it needs to be objective.
alexfromapex··on You need to enable LAN in new Sequoia (VS Code)
I was going nuts trying to figure out why things that used to work would no longer work. Then, I realized ping would work fine in MacOS Terminal app but not in VS Code. It turns out that you need to let VS Code talk to devices on your LAN in the new Sequoia release.
alexfromapex··on Court strikes down US net neutrality rules
Let's take the best thing that's happened to humanity and ruin it with corporatism...truly unbelievable if this ruling doesn't get overturned.
alexfromapex··on Most people don't care about quality
My hypothesis is the lack of quality is being driven by our quantitative and empirical obsessions. It's more difficult, if not impossible in some cases, to accurately quantify qualitative outputs. But I think if enough research was done, it would show that quality is an ultimate driver of success in many domains. It's a sad state of affairs that starts at the top, where governments are mostly driven by things like GDP.

alexfromapex··on 80% of AI Projects Crash and Burn, Billions Wasted Says Rand Report
In my experience, hiring managers worry way too much about finding research engineers with deep math skills when at the end of the day they need software folks to operationalize simple maybe slightly fine-tuned foundation models.
alexfromapex··on The upstream cause of the youth mental health crisis is the loss of community
Money moves in stealthy ways already, and there are ways to identify that. The problem is the legislature is supposed to be supervising the government entities that pursue financial corruption. Instead of reducing all problems to economic problems, where only the very rich have a voice, we should be encouraging a legislature with integrity to do what is right for everyone.
alexfromapex··on The upstream cause of the youth mental health crisis is the loss of community
This is so accurate. There's been lots of talk of enshittification and it really is just everything now. Monetizing the well in modern capitalism means poisoning it. It all can be traced back to lobbying in politics. They need to ban money from politics immediately and everything will improve.

alexfromapex··on How to test without mocking
Maybe you’re writing them incorrectly then? I’ve written several that were for core app features used in 30ish test cases on a team with 7 engineers and they’ve worked flawlessly for over two years.
alexfromapex··on How to test without mocking
Don’t really care about advice from the guy who invented an incredibly non pragmatic programming language. I also honestly had to look up who he was. So his sage advice hasn’t brought him much fame.
alexfromapex··on How to test without mocking
If you need to test collation or some database implementation detail, that is the exception where it may be good to use a real database but certainly is not the rule.
alexfromapex··on How to test without mocking
It is so cringe to see bad advice like this being given. Yes, you can write mocks incorrectly. You should not model them after the "happy path" but you should make sure they cover the most use-cases both good and bad. I have been a senior or principal engineer on teams that did both of these approaches and the non-mocking approach is terrible because you end up with separate tests that have colliding data. It's slower using a real database back-end and becomes a mess and leads to issues where your database is heavily coupled to your test code which is the real anti-pattern. Then a year or two later when you want to change databases or database architectures you're screwed because you have to go into a bunch of tests manually and change things. The whole point of the mocks is it makes everything modular.

alexfromapex··on Why YC went to DC
It was funny how the closing statement was admiring rugged individualism too when that philosophy is encouraging a lot of the damaging effects similar to how social media has been harming the world.
alexfromapex··on DOL considering rule change to drive down STEM wages with foreign workers
This basically sounds like terrorism to me. Empowering other nations while hurting our own STEM citizens? Yes, terrorism is not really the correct word but this will do massive damage to the US.
alexfromapex··on Woodworking as an escape from the absurdity of software
The nicest part of working at the bar is when you leave the bar you're done working. Also, you don't need to get your drink pouring approved by another bartender that nitpick small details of what you did to boost their own ego.

alexfromapex··on What makes a great software engineer [pdf]
The problem is for upper management there is usually a much shorter list of expectations, consisting of things like "propensity to work as much as needed to meet deadlines".
alexfromapex··on Is Accredited Investor criteria keeping the poor poor?
My start-up is offering private investment in the company but I don't qualify to invest with the SEC guidelines in Rule 501 because I haven't been making insane amounts of money. Despite not meeting the criteria, I have at least five thousand dollars saved I'm prepared to invest. How is this fair? How is this not keeping people poor?
