alexcroox··on Modern CI is too complex and misdirected
That's why I love Buddy (buddy.works), you build your CI pipelines with a UI, all the config and logic is all easily configurable without having to know the magic config key/value combination. Need to add a secrets file or private key; just add it to the "filesystem" and it'l be available during the run, no awkwardly base64ing contents into an environment string. Unfortunately I have to use github actions/CircleCi for my iOS deployments still, but I read MacOS container support is coming soon.
alexcroox··on Night.fm
Network tab shows it's waiting for a request to /api so definitely under too much load right now.
alexcroox··on Lets talk about changelogs (how I loathe 'bugfixes and performance improvements)
I automate the app deployments for our team and “bugfixes and performance improvements” is the changelog because it’s totally automated on release. Yes the automation could grab something from the commit logs but I’m not confident I’d want to expose some of our commit messages. Also recent versions of iOS have further hidden away the update ui making it very hard to find for most users, so why bother taking the time to add them manually when 99% of your user base will never see them?
alexcroox··on A warning about Glassdoor
This is the same for sites like Checkatrade. The business owners can remove negative reviews which makes the entire site worthless.

alexcroox··on iOS 14 will let you change your default email and web browser apps
Thanks for the up to date knowledge!

Aren't third party browsers still just gimped webkit webviews? I'm not sure the worse performance is worth having a different browser chrome around the web page?
alexcroox··on Oculus: Hand Tracking Updates
Don’t forget if you install Virtual Desktop you can play all your PCVR games wirelessly on it too. I play HL Alyx like this and it’s flawless.
alexcroox··on Private client-side-only PWAs are hard, but now Apple made them impossible
Are we absolutely sure they don't just mean the localstorage containers that aren't part of the current domain? In the same way they are clearing cookies from a different domain, and not the ones that belong to the current domain.

EDIT: Clarification from a Webkit dev https://twitter.com/alexcroox/status/1242559843354972161

alexcroox··on Full third-party cookie blocking and more
Don’t they just mean the localstorage containers for other domains than the current one? Ie your normal app’s storage will be left untouched as it is currently but third party domain localstorage containers will be wiped?
alexcroox··on WebKit Goals for 2020
A lot of companies build a native version of their web app just for push notifications on iOS. Unfortunately I doubt we’ll see web push any time soon.
alexcroox··on New Features in Vue 3
I'm most excited about the reduction in bundle size and the ability to tree-shake the source.
alexcroox··on New Features in Vue 3
React for 2/3 years, Vue for 1 year building large SASS apps. I use Svelte for my personal site and really enjoyed it, but dismissed it as a contender for my companies latest application. It's community is still too young, there's not enough established, battle-tested libraries for common tasks like routing. It reminds me of React in the early days, I felt overwhelmed with choice and a constant feeling the 3rd party library you are about to go all in with will be shortly replaced with a better, community backed alternative.

I'd love to re-visit that in a couple of years time when it's popularity and community has risen and is more established. Just as React did.

alexcroox··on The Amazon Is Not the Earth’s Lungs
One Strange Rock, a nature documentary hosted by Will Smith (stay with me) actually goes into this in some detail and I would definitely recommend a watch. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7651892/
alexcroox··on Rules for Autocomplete
I'm experiencing this daily with Google search results where they keep adding that box around a link you clicked last when you click back in the browser. You press back to return to search results to click the next link in the list and it jumps all the results down and you end up miss-clicking. Infuriating.
alexcroox··on GitLab sees huge spike in project imports
The irony of this whole thing being that GitLab is hosted on Azure...
alexcroox··on AWS Lambda and .zip is a recipe for serverless success
The framework handles the setup and management of versions and resources for me. Uploading is a small but relevant part of it.
alexcroox··on AWS Lambda and .zip is a recipe for serverless success
I actually find zipping and uploading manually a PITA. Started using the Serverless framework [1] recently and now I just run `serverless deploy --stage dev --aws-profile profilename` from my repo (which is an npm script).

alexcroox··on Monthly Amazon Prime membership fees are about to increase
I use Netflix all the time, every time I check Amazon video the landing page looks the same, no new shows or movies. In fact my video landing page has looked the same for a good 2 months now. I'm not sure if they haven't added anything new or they just suck at promoting the new additions...
alexcroox··on Leaflet – A JavaScript library for mobile-friendly interactive maps
I use Leaflet for 90% of my mapping projects. But once in a while a complex requirement comes along and only OpenLayers has the power to solve it. Rotating a map was a recent one.
alexcroox··on Bucket Stream: Finding S3 Buckets by watching certificate transparency logs
Correct me if I’m wrong but last time I tried to make a new bucket’s contents public it was a real PITA. The default configuration is very locked down. So I think it’s never a case of minimal configuration and always misconfiguration.

alexcroox··on Fast MySQL Backup and Restore Using Mydumper and Myloader
What tool would you recommend to easily take frequent backups and pump them to S3 glacier storage for example? I don't want to spend hours configuring something as it's only for a small personal server.
alexcroox··on Amazon Planning a Microsoft Office Killer
The trouble with Amazon is everything that isn't their retail site has terrible UX so I'm not hopeful.
