Engineering Manager for the Seattle branch of Google's Kubernetes and Container Engine (GKE) team.

Previously, I was the overall technical lead for Google Compute Engine's initial public launch; also lead the design and launch of its second-gen VM instance manager subsystem.

And before all of that, ran a research lab at Stony Brook University [1], but I'm a reformed academic and prefer building real systems now.

Glad to hear GKE's working well for you -- thanks hosh and whalesalad!

We do invest a lot in making Google Container Engine a great experience, including integrating it with other parts of GCP (e.g., IAM [1]), but at the same time, the core is plain vanilla Kubernetes.

alex-mohr··on Ask HN: Hiring managers, what tech skills will you be hiring for in 2017?
I manage the Google Container Engine and Kubernetes team in Seattle (we have other sites in Mountain View and Warsaw).

Aside from the obvious interest in building container orchestration systems, I look for a passion to solve real user problems, not only building a piece of tech.

Bonus points for knowing about Docker or containers or clouds or Golang or security.

More points for meeting users where they are. And the most bonus points for leadership and initiative.

We're particularly looking for someone to lead and/or manage our software eng team building security features into Kubernetes and GKE.

It's great to hear GKE is meeting your needs so well! (Yes, I work on it.)

For 1.4, the Kubernetes Cluster Lifecycle and Ops SIGs are working on making the install and setup process much easier, including on AWS [1]. That won't magically turn it into Kubernetes as a Service, of course, but we hope it'll help users on other platforms.

alex-mohr··on Introducing Google Container Engine (GKE) Node Pools
The blog post didn't touch on it in detail, but this allows a single Kubernetes cluster to span multiple zones.
alex-mohr··on Kubernetes V1 Released
Yes, we've heard from a number of people who want that and will improve regional support.

Current ideas are either a single regional cluster or via federation of multiple zonal clusters.

See eg https://github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/kubernetes/blob/maste... for an proposal on the latter.
