alecthomas··on Tell HN: Cinch, W7-like window management for OSX
This application is useful for resizing and moving: http://coderage-software.com/zooom/index.html

However, it's kind of ordinary that you have to pay $15 to get functionality that should be included in the WM.

alecthomas··on Microsoft rips off Plurk
And an update: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2009/dec09/12-15sta...
alecthomas··on Chromium Software Updates: Courgette
Save yourself the pain, don't.
alecthomas··on Chrome vs Firefox 3.6 vs Safari vs Webkit: Chrome Wins Again
I don't know if this is your problem, but Chrome on Linux has some memory leaks that occasionally put my 2GB desktop into swap. Luckily I can use the Chrome task manager to find the offending tab and kill it.
alecthomas··on Table Oriented Programming
I always thought Cellulose (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/Cellulose/0.2) was an interesting idea, though haven't done anymore than play around with it.
alecthomas··on Open Source Is Really About Documentation – Twisted vs. Tornado
I also think this was one of the factors in PHP's popularity. Its documentation was (is?) excellent.
alecthomas··on Somebody Has To Say It: It’s Time For iTunes Lite
> And now I have a dedicated device (iPhone) to play music. I only use iTunes to sync.

Same here, but I consider that a failing of iTunes, because I'd prefer to play music on my iPhone rather than deal with iTunes shitty interface.

alecthomas··on Dropped IE support for Instapaper
At my two previous employers, that's exactly what they do. All machines are completely locked-down. I suspect this is not unusual at large, more traditional corporations.
alecthomas··on Telstra rolls out 'world's fastest wireless broadband network' (Australia)
I can't comment on the veracity of Telstra's speed claims, but Optus' are a complete joke. Most of the time I'm lucky to get even modem level speeds out of my 3G card, let alone 3.2Mbps. Once again, the schpiel quotes the theoretical maximum and conveniently ignores reality.
alecthomas··on Ask YC: What to do when co-founder won't take plunge
I can't link to the article from my iPhone, but do a search for "startup forgotten founders" for some very useful advice on handling this situation.
alecthomas··on Ask HN: When do you code?
10pm to 3am also, but I think it's just that there are no distractions.
alecthomas··on Qt 4.5 will be released under the LGPL
I've found PyGTK is a joy to use, but the major downside for me is that it doesn't use native controls.

It mimics them with a theme on Windows, so presumably it looks okay (though I suspect it misses the finer details).

But on OSX, with its very distinctive widgets, GTK just looks horrible :(

alecthomas··on Posterous had an amazing growth spike in December
Congratulations Posterous! It's really renewed my interesting in blogging, and the simplicity is 100% to thank.
alecthomas··on I did it: The postmortem of doing 31 features in 31 days
Interesting site, it's fun to explore. It might be nice to display content inside the cell itself once clicked, or in a lightbox, as the back/forward through history is quite jarring.
alecthomas··on Don't Bet on Moore Saving Your Ass
Reading articles and watching videos from the engineering teams of big sites is interesting, though not always easily applicable.

For example, the Facebook Engineering Blog (http://www.facebook.com/eblog) or Google Tech Talks (http://au.youtube.com/results?search_query=google+tech+talk+...).

alecthomas··on Diary of a Failed Startup
This is often referred to as YAGNI (http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?YouArentGonnaNeedIt).
