alec··on How To Reduce Image Size With WebP Automagically
At the time, 40-60% of Yahoo page views were done with an empty cache: http://www.yuiblog.com/blog/2007/01/04/performance-research-...
alec··on Google Introduces Same-Day Shipping to Compete With eBay and Amazon
Google makes money by showing ads to people who want to buy things.

If everyone goes to eBay and Amazon instead of Google to buy things, no one will buy ads from Google.

If Google can provide a compelling alternative to eBay and Amazon, they reduce the risk that people stop shopping on Google and that people stop buying ads on Google.

This looks like Google focusing on their bottom line.

alec··on Google Keep
Evernote has taken hundreds of millions in funding over the course of five years. How they going to justify that investment with some portion of their 11 million users paying $45/year? Are they going to sell? If they sell, will the service survive?
alec··on Show HN: Increase your productivity with ambient noise
I like "Star Trek TNG Ambient Engine Noise (Idling for 24 hrs)" for drowning out everything else: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPoqNeR3_UA
alec··on Go as an alternative to Node.js for Very Fast Servers
What about Go makes it easy to manage and refactor large codebases? I don't do much Java, but whenever I've watched someone use Eclipse for refactoring, I question why I'm still using vim, because it is just magic and does everything for you.
alec··on The Chromebook Pixel
I regularly use the SSH client. I wouldn't call it wonderful; it works, but that's about it. Highlight a wrapped line? GNOME Terminal will Do The Right Thing, Chrome's SSH client won't and gives you a newline. See a URL? GNOME Terminal will let you click to open; Chrome's SSH client won't.
alec··on Facebook May Soon Be Tracking You At All Times
My bank knows about most of my purchases, but it is still considered private data. My health care provider knows about my medical history, but it is still considered private data. Why should a cell phone provider be any different?
alec··on Hipmunk Launches Flight Deals
I expect that the utility of this drops as more people use it - if a bunch of people get a notification about a cheap flight, and there are only two seats at that price, most people are going to be unhappy.
alec··on Optimizing Real World Go
Completely off-topic to optimizing Go, but you may want to look at smem - it does what you implemented (including looking through a subset of processes) but includes a few more useful measures of memory usage that help in the presence of multiple processes from the same binary - http://www.selenic.com/smem/
alec··on Google Flights
Both Hipmunk and Google Flight Search help you sort out bad flights in ways that other websites don't - Hipmunk calls this "agony". To see this in Google Flight Search, scroll down to the bottom of a results list, you'll see something like "123 longer or more expensive flights hidden. Show all." - these are the longer, no less expensive layovers that you probably don't care about.
alec··on Google Flights
If you do mileage runs, you probably know about matrix.itasoftware.com, but in case you don't - visit http://matrix.itasoftware.com/?showPricePerMile=true and then do your search to see and sort by price per mile.
alec··on Page Weight Matters
When I'm mobile, I like to read with ihackernews.com because it has a button that uses viewtext.org to just show me the text of the article.
alec··on Google Flights
It does that now - click on the button that says 'round trip' and choose 'multi city'.
alec··on Google Nexus 4 Review
I have a Galaxy Nexus, last year's version of the Nexus 4. One thing I value about it is the Google/non-carrier-controlled experience, which I expect is similar to what you've had with an iPhone. There's not vendor crap on it and it gets updated by Google when there's a new release; apparently Android 4.2 is on the way. Non-Nexus devices have had some difficulty getting updates due to carriers or phone manufacturers.

Updates are nice because they extend the useful life of the phone.

alec··on Pure Go implementation of D. J. Bernstein's cdb constant database library
LevelDB is a sorted string table; cdb is a hash table. Without knowing anything more about the implementation, I expect that arbitrary lookups are slower in LevelDB than cdb.
alec··on Behind The Scenes At Adioso - Part 1: Reality Check
If you're searching in the US, give Google Flight Search a try - it has a data/price graph that will let you filter by departure/arrival time, and it's instant.
alec··on ITA Emerges from Google's Shadow, Unveils New Airline Platform
Google Flight Search has a calendar view: it's hidden behind the button directly to the right of the return date and lets you play with different departure date and trip lengths.
alec··on ITA Emerges from Google's Shadow, Unveils New Airline Platform
I work at Google on flight search and was at ITA before that. We indeed continue to use Common Lisp. QPX, the flight search engine, uses SBCL.
alec··on Clang: Defending C++ from Murphy's Million Monkeys
gcc's error messages, especially for C++ templates, got much better in 4.5. They don't have pretty colors, but I didn't find a substantial benefit from clang 2.9's vs gcc 4.5's for C++ development when using both for a week.

Note that if you're on a Mac, your system's gcc is likely several years out of date.

alec··on How Go improves expressiveness without sacrificing performance
Check the first comment in the article - I can't believe that is actually good and idiomatic. The author uses the indexes, but the range command also supports returning the values.

To be fair, I have a lot of difficulty figuring out what's a reference and what's a value in Go; I suspect if it were an int and not a struct, that wouldn't work.

alec··on Man with multiple degrees fails standardized test for children
It says in the second paragraph he's an elected official.
alec··on Go version 1 proposal
Last I checked a few months ago, if you want to use a distribution's version of Go, you must install all later libraries as root - there's no place for "my local libraries".
alec··on Google Flight Search
If you leave the destination open and limit by price, you can answer questions like "Where can I go for $500"?
alec··on Google Flight Search
Trip length duration is currently limited to 14 days.
alec··on Google Flight Search
To see how the map is useful, put in an origin and then play with the price limit.
alec··on Redesigning the browser window
I tried a ~22" screen vertical for a while, primarily for coding, for exactly the same arguments you made. I switched back because I found I was still only using about as much of the screen as I was when it was vertical - I'm much better about looking side to side than I am up and down - and because I'd rather have two or three windows open side-by-side than one on top and one on bottom.
alec··on Google to launch flight search service soon
ITA's Matrix beta site (http://matrix.itasoftware.com) does both flexible day and flexible airport for multi-leg trips. To do multiple airports, type in the airport codes separated by commas: "lax, sfo".
alec··on Go vs. Python for a simple web server
When I read "I would seriously consider using Go for writing server side of web applications as it provides a right balance between speed and memory efficiency of the running code", I was expecting at least some number to back it up.
alec··on Hipmunk CEO: Yeah, Entrepreneurs Think It’s Getting Wacky, Too
The older version of matrix - currently available at http://matrix1.itasoftware.com - had a not-so-inviting page asking you for a login if you had one, but never required it. There's a "Log in as a guest" link that gets you to the same page you'd have as if you had registered as a typical user.

The new version, http://matrix.itasoftware.com/, has no such login requirement.

alec··on Play Framework (full stack Java framework with Scala) v1.2 released
I tried Play last year and it completely changed the way I thought about Java - hey, it's actually a nice language if you don't make the libraries so stuffy.
