alangibson··on Canada says online streaming services must hand over 5% of their revenues
This is closer to the real answer. The price is what the buyer is willing to pay.
alangibson··on Is Microsoft trying to commit suicide?
> We've realized for some time that not only are language model technologies going to dominate our future

Where 'we' is defined as people whose income depends on ever more investment in LLM tech. For the rest of us, they seem hopelessly flawed as a general solution to anything.

alangibson··on Canada says online streaming services must hand over 5% of their revenues
This is a myth. Pricing is not deterministic like that. There are many reasons that a company may choose not to raise prices when it's costs go up.
alangibson··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
What's your reasoning behind saying "the design is good"? Everything thing I've seen says it's heavy, hot, slow, has an unusable menu system.
alangibson··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
Is AI hardware moving at all? Seems like a DOA idea in a world where smartphones exist.
alangibson··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
50M as a generous acqui-hire maybe.
alangibson··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
Valuation is essentially what the last investors are willing to pay for a 'share' of the company multiplied by total shares.

They may be throwing a hail mary and trying to get it all back from sucker tho.

alangibson··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
If they had charged $3000 per pin but actually made it work then they could make a case for brand value.
alangibson··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
I wish they had just made a Bluetooth accessory to an app. But you can't get a $800M validation with a $99, easily cloneable accessory.
alangibson··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
There isn't any. It could maybe have been interesting as a Bluetooth speaker, mic and camera accessory tho.
alangibson··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
There's a new Coffeezilla video out claiming Rabbit is based on an old crypto scam. So at least 50% of this category is already a scam.
alangibson··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
They've been working on this thing since 2018. They'd be way better off just moving on to a better idea.

Being too early is functionally identical to being wrong.

alangibson··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
Good point. Could be a good private equity target. Buy it, load it up with debt, pay yourself out, then declare bankruptcy.
alangibson··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
It's really hard to imagine they have assets worth remotely close to $1B. They don't even have a brand to sell after their terrible launch.

The value of this company is cash in the bank minus debts. So probably negative.

alangibson··on Building a Waitlist (The Wrong Way)
Confirmation bias is a killer. The lesson you learned is worth much more than you lost.

I can't stress this enough: don't use search ads for anything but laser targeted direct response marketing. It's somewhere between useless and actively harmful for anything else.

The only things I do anymore are 1. talk to actual sales prospects and 2. content marketing. Everything else is a handout to Google and Facebook shareholders.

alangibson··on Raspberry Pi Ltd is considering an IPO
There is a lot of general flight to safety in the US, but I think the UK is a special case. The UKs economic decline is irreversible at this point. Crumbling (literally) infrastructure, completely isolated elites, out of the EU, inability to build basically anything. Why hang around to find out where the bottom is...
alangibson··on Raspberry Pi Ltd is considering an IPO
Compute Modules are targeted squarely at industry. Environmental hardening is provided by the cabinet you install them in.

I built an RPi 4 based plasma cutter and I've never had a crash. You don't get more EM interference than that, short of putting it in a microwave.

alangibson··on Google is overhauling search results with AI overviews and Gemini organization
> You realize when you say, "Microsoft", you're basically talking about OpenAI tech right?

I own MSFT stock because of it, so yea. I only wish they owned more because OpenAI will be a monster acquisition target.

I'm curious what this will all mean for AWS. Amazon is notoriously behind, so I wonder if we'll see then lose customers because of it.

alangibson··on Google is overhauling search results with AI overviews and Gemini organization
90+% of "AI" use by the general public is going to happen via Google and Microsoft products. It was always going to be a feature of established, scaled businesses with cloud offerings.

People that think OpenAI is going to replace, or even meaningfully effect, Google are ignoring basic laws of economic gravity.

alangibson··on Energy, not compute, will be the #1 bottleneck to AI progress – Mark Zuckerberg [video]
If we assume this is true, then it's a massive problem for AI. Building energy infra is slow and hellishly expensive. Near and medium term use cases just aren't compelling enough to start upgrading the power grid.
alangibson··on Steve Albini has died
Sucks to hear.

It's worth noting that he didn't consider himself a producer. He always said he was a recording engineer.

alangibson··on The oceans have broken temperature records every day over the past year
Complete non sequitur.

Historical flood frequency and the emergence of a novel deadly virus have literally nothing to do with each other. So no, I don't understand that.

The only way I could possibly understand that it's through the eyes of a 6 year old who just didn't like to be told what to do.

EDIT: I guess what you mean is there's a "type of person" that looks for reasons to tell you what to do. There aren't. There are however people who dedicate their lives to making sure people they will never know don't die of things like floods and viruses. If those people are villains to you then that says a whole lot about you.

alangibson··on The oceans have broken temperature records every day over the past year
Common pejorative terms used by the right to whip up anger on their side against opponents:

"activists" as a slur.

"pushing ... agendas" for those seeking change (see for instance the famous "gay agenda").

"authoritarian" for anything vaguely regulatory.

TBH these aren't dog whistles anymore because everyone has heard them enough to know what is being implied.

alangibson··on The oceans have broken temperature records every day over the past year
> Also, it’s not like floods are a recent phenomenon.

There is a type of mind that just deletes inconvenient parts of a piece of information.

"500 year floods are happening every 10 years" becomes "500 year floods happen".

"every summer is the hottest on record" becomes "every summer is hot".

alangibson··on The oceans have broken temperature records every day over the past year
https://www.epa.gov/acidrain/what-acid-rain
alangibson··on The oceans have broken temperature records every day over the past year
Because it causes acid rain. Why are you having strong opinions if you don't know basic facts of the issue?
alangibson··on The oceans have broken temperature records every day over the past year
Downvoted for straw man argument, dog whistles and uninformed comment about what activists are doing, not because I disagree (I do).
alangibson··on Tesla to lay off everyone working on Superchargers, new vehicles
An electric carmaker absolutely must have 2 things: an exciting product pipeline (true off all carmakers) and a rapidly growing charging network.

Tesla has fumbled both. It would take years to get back in the game if they developed the will. It takes so long to get a car to market that letting your pipeline go dry is suicidal.

alangibson··on Tesla to lay off everyone working on Superchargers, new vehicles
I'm putting Tesla on my mental "corporate death watch" list. Musk just killed any justification for new buyers to pick Tesla.

Product range? Will only get more obsolete. Supercharger network? Will only get more crowded.

All so he can have his nerd truck and robotaxis.

alangibson··on The walls of Apple's garden are tumbling down
American living in Europe here. in the EU, you can't just apply economic logic to everything like you can in the US.

Policymakers will absolutely piss off a huge number of people over some basic principle. Look for instance at Germany's willingness to burn it's industrial base to the ground over Ukraine.
