alainv··on Bill Gates calls for terror data debate
Yes, this is very naive. They're actually asking for a forensic instrument - asserting that it is for a one-time use is absurd on the face of it. The most thorough deconstruction of this argument I've seen is here: http://www.zdziarski.com/blog/?p=5645
alainv··on Glittering Blue
Beautiful, thanks for sharing.
alainv··on India's telecom regulator cracks down on Facebook for its Free Basics campaign [pdf]
It's rare to come across such an earnest belief in American exceptionalism these days. Do you have any sources for any of your positive assertions about the average American, or is it mainly personal experience/observed/anecdotal?
alainv··on Project Abacus: Google's plan to kill the password via biometric tracking
> And then we have fingerprints, which are very secure and onerous to imitate

Aaaaand there goes the article's credibility. A pity, because there's a real need for a cogent debate about this panopticon-as-password program.

alainv··on Google is Forcing Routebuilder to Shut Down
You seem to say those are the only two options. There's clearly a third one: use the API and, if they suddenly enforce the excessively onerous terms, go public in an effort to make them back down from public pressure.

This has been shown viable time and again, with App Store rejections and the like. It is obviously high-risk but sometimes worthwhile.

alainv··on Pfizer’s Big Breakthrough: Global Tax Avoidance
Ok - can you elaborate why you so clearly favour aggression and blaming Ireland rather than simple domestic legislation and general political will to prevent these companies using other countries as tax havens?

Poe's law? Poe's law.
alainv··on Introducing the Plex Media Player
Am I missing something? Emby appears to have the exact same business plan with Emby Premiere.
alainv··on Outgrowing Apache Storm: why we built in-house distributed stream processing
Looks very interesting! Do you plan to open-source SuperChief?
alainv··on Questioning the Longstanding Plan to Merge the Dead Sea and the Red Sea
Don't ask for much, do you? As it happens they quite agree:

“I think that the best way to conserve the Dead Sea would be to reintroduce the natural flow from the Jordan River and decrease the pumping of water from the lake to the factories,”

alainv··on Hard Science About Diet
Fascinating that the core study the article focuses on is using strictly male subjects. I thought this had been a controversial approach[1] for quite some time now - yet they still claim the study's main goal is "doing it right."
