alain_gilbert··on Omni Group Layoffs
I'm not saying the product can or cannot be good on first release...

But the world is ever changing. Let say you build a UI for database. In a few years, a new version of mysql or postgresql will be released, and you have to update your software as well to use the new features.

What I'm saying is that almost whatever you are building, the development will never be done.

alain_gilbert··on Omni Group Layoffs
I don't think subscription is that bad.

Development and support is never ending.

Single purchase, you also get "single development", and then it dies.

At some point the market is not infinite.

alain_gilbert··on Billionaires Want People Back to Work. Employees Aren’t So Sure
Yeah, but I mean people (with children) don't get to experience what a normal time working from home looks like.
alain_gilbert··on Billionaires Want People Back to Work. Employees Aren’t So Sure
This is doomed by the fact that children also stay at home :P
alain_gilbert··on Norway to hit those breaking quarantine with $2k fines
That make sense. Thank you ^^
alain_gilbert··on Norway to hit those breaking quarantine with $2k fines

Anyone who is caught staying in their country cottage, rather than their official residence
What's wrong with doing the quarantine in the country cottage ?!
alain_gilbert··on Apple store workers should be paid for time waiting to be searched, court rules
lol, I guess apple shouldn't care too much about paying them for the 10 seconds then.
alain_gilbert··on An Update on Bradfitz: Leaving Google
I'm curious, nobody seems to talk about Go2 in this thread.

I haven't hear about it for a very long time. Is it still something the team was working on ?

And if yes, does the fact that Brad is leaving going to impact a lot on the development ?

alain_gilbert··on BusKill: A kill cord for your laptop
I created the exact same thing 3 years ago.

Main difference is that you don't need to configure anything with mine :P

alain_gilbert··on Ask HN: How do you deal with software licensing?
Got it. I though it was for a personal project. I understand a company might feel uncomfortable.

Anyway, I found: https://cryptlex.com yesterday while searching for other options. That looks interesting.

alain_gilbert··on Ask HN: How do you deal with software licensing?
I made a software that has been in prod for more than a year now (handling licenses for more than 400 customers monthly). The software is self-hosted by the users, and they need a valid license from my website to run it.

I made all the tools to generate and manage licenses for this app.

I wanted to extract the license management part out of this project, and create a new separate product out of it.

My goal was to create exactly what you are looking for: a self-hosting license management tool for personal projects...

I would be willing to talk more about it with you if you are interested.

Feel free to email me, (my email is in my profile)

alain_gilbert··on Ask HN: Do you have personal bots?
I use your chrome extension and love it :)

I can recommend this chrome extension.

alain_gilbert··on Commit Graph Drawing Algorithms
I'm curious what's the project you wanted to build ?

I had a project where I wanted to link commits from different projects. So I could say commit X in repo A depends on commit Y in repo B. And wanted to display the graphs side by side, with the dependencies...

I had some fun trying to replicate the sourcetree algorithm.

https://github.com/alaingilbert/git2graph

The code is ugly, but there is a bunch of tests that could be useful. I also made a basic UI tool to autogenerate tests according to what you draw.

I'm posting it here, maybe someone could find it interesting.

alain_gilbert··on No CS Degree – Interviews with self-taught developers
Maybe they are used to compilers telling them all the typos before it actually compile.
alain_gilbert··on Ask HN: Why are phone numbers considered a secure personal identifier?
Up until very recently, AT&T forced me to have a "four digits" password to login on their website (prepaid phone).

That's how secure I see phones.

alain_gilbert··on Characterizing secret leakage in public GitHub repositories
One must be careful if they use docker.

I have seen people doing this in their Dockerfile

    ADD . /src
To add all the sources in the image, and inadvertently just made public all the secrets that were in the .env file.

Personally, I like to keep all my secrets very far from my repository.

alain_gilbert··on Ask HN: Which great products didn't succeed?
Good old time.

I made ttdashboard.com which was a live statistics dashboard for turntable.

alain_gilbert··on Why I Switched from Python to Clojure (2016)
The worst I have seen is: There is a merge commit (fixing conflicts) and then, a "if" condition get accidentally de-indented (compared to what it should be), and now this bug is completely invisible and the code will run just fine... (until you figure out what's going on)
alain_gilbert··on 2FA on the command line
Please enlighten me how is it easier to decrypt my 1password on my laptop than it is on my phone ?
alain_gilbert··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2019)
What is your tech stack if you don't mind me asking ?
alain_gilbert··on Show HN: Task – A simple build tool written in Go
After giving a quick look, my tasks are twice faster with make.

So I was curious to know why and I tried to clone the project to debug it, and could not figure out how to setup the dependencies properly.

You should add a section how to contribute/develop.

alain_gilbert··on Show HN: Task – A simple build tool written in Go
Oh wow, I didn't tried it yet, but reading the doc, it looks exactly how I imagine the perfect "make"/"task runner" should work.

"make" frustrated me so many times. I'll definitely try "task".

alain_gilbert··on Ask HN: Go-to web stack today?
You can also change vuejs delimiters.

        var app = new Vue({ delimiters: ['${', '}'], ... });
alain_gilbert··on Ask HN: Go-to web stack today?
I use the exact same setup using Go instead of Nim.

It works marvellously well. I use VueJS when I have a page which requires more intensive JS.

For dead simple use case (no subdomains), I was even able to embed caddy within my static binary file.

Serving hundreds of users on a $5 VPS.

alain_gilbert··on Gravitee: Open-Source API Gateway
For those interested, "L7 engine" seems to be the "application layer" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_layer in the OSI model https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model

So communication protocol such as gRPC and HTTP.

alain_gilbert··on Gravitee: Open-Source API Gateway
Sorry for asking simple questions.

Can someone tell us what exactly is L7 ?

It seems like I cannot find any information when googling it.

alain_gilbert··on A new look for rust-lang.org
I share the same (useless) opinion.
alain_gilbert··on Gophish: An open source phishing toolkit

alain_gilbert··on China cracks down on religion, crosses burned at Christian churches
I think it's one thing to remove the religious symbol, and a complete other thing to burn it publicly before removing it.

The later seems to indicate that this symbol is "hated" by the people who are removing it (government in this case).

I can "kinda" understand that they don't want religious symbols in public.

But the fact that they shame and uses fear against the people is what shock me the most about this.

alain_gilbert··on Ask HN: How did you get introduced to HN?
I was following some people on twitter that I found extremely interesting... to later realize that all the articles they were posting were from HN.
