al_james··on Ask HN: Diaspora hasn't updated their blog in a month.
Er, if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
al_james··on Our hackday project: Readshout.com
Humph.... Signed up and lots of random people started following me. Thats what I hate about twitter. I am not here to make friends, I am here to share with my contacts.

Request: Private profiles and only share with my followers.

al_james··on Our hackday project: Readshout.com
Arh, good tip thanks!

But still a bit of a pain. A tiny icon next to the URL bar would be much better!

al_james··on Our hackday project: Readshout.com
Hmmmmmm.... Any chance of a google chrome extension button? I dont have a bookmarks bar!
al_james··on Amazon CloudFront Adds Default Root Object Capability
No thats not the case. You still have to use S3 as the origin.

This is talking about allowing you to assign a default root document, e.g. a index.html so that requests to (e.g.) http://cache.mydomain.com/ will return something.

al_james··on Google Ceasing Development of Google Wave
Ok, in other words google are becoming less willing to develop cutting edge technologies and are going to spend more time on making money out of their traffic (e.g. purchase of ITA and listing hotel prices).

If you make money on the internet from a sector that goole are / might be in, be very afraid.

al_james··on Ask HN: Anyone hosting their site on servers in their garage?
Do you have a UPS in your garage?
al_james··on PHP 5.3.3 Released
Actually, I agree. I have often thought there is a space for a revamped PHP, with compatible syntax (because people know it) but with many of the niggles removed and a better core library.
al_james··on How Scribd runs 150,000,000 polygon intersections a day
Hmmmm.... GPU's in the cloud anyone?
al_james··on Ask HN: Do you think Browsers need a volume control?
But otherwise, how do you, for example, listen to your iTunes but mute your browser?
al_james··on Iphone Tutorial: Creating a RSS Feed Reader
I think you have hit my main point. Objective-C feels too heavyweight for (typically) small iOs apps.
al_james··on Iphone Tutorial: Creating a RSS Feed Reader
Speed and user experience!

Fullscreen Webkit animations are normally jerky and slow. Trying to do any form of complex graphics (canvas bitmap data for example) is a no hoper.

Overall phonegap applications (at least the ones I have seen) are just not as polished as native ones.

al_james··on Iphone Tutorial: Creating a RSS Feed Reader
Yuck! After all these years of high level languages, having to use a mid-level language like objective-c to develop for iPhone feels like a step backwards! If only HTML5 / phonegap was more of a viable option.
al_james··on Chatroulette may be about to make a very big mistake
No I dont think that at all... I just think gay guys will do it for free, so there is (maybe) as much money to be made!
al_james··on Chatroulette may be about to make a very big mistake
I think the penis showing men would just disguise their penises. So we would see penises with little wigs and glasses on. I would like to see the penis AI cope with that!
al_james··on Chatroulette may be about to make a very big mistake
Chatroulette is not going to be a viable long term business.

It does, however, tell us two things:

1) A lot of men seem to like to show there penis to people (especially girls) 2) Girls dont like to see random men's penises

Square that circle (e.g. make the men pay and pay the girls to watch) and you will be on a million dollar idea.

al_james··on Chatroulette may be about to make a very big mistake
I know some people who worked on a 'porn detector' project at a University. Their main job was to tag the training and test sets by labelling breasts and other naughty bits. Fun job! ;)
al_james··on Apple releases newly designed Mac Mini
No its not. Apple can hardly sell the Apple TV concept at at their current price point, these are alot more expensive. People wont pay it.

I should imagine these cost more than most people's TVs.

al_james··on Apple releases newly designed Mac Mini
I disagree. Its too expensive as a TV only box, and thats a market that is still very new and small. People (well everyone I know who has one) look at this as an entry level Apple desktop machine.
al_james··on Apple releases newly designed Mac Mini
The inclusion of a HDMI port is interesting. Probably useless to most people (who have existing monitors or will buy a normal computer display) but does this suggest this might run the new Apple TV service?
al_james··on Apple releases newly designed Mac Mini
How does it run?
al_james··on Apple releases newly designed Mac Mini
Yes, it is quite expensive. But then again, the entire Mac range has become more expensive over the last year. You used to be able to get a macbook for about £750, now its £850. At these prices I struggle to recommend Macs to people to who they would be suited, over a £400 dell laptop.
al_james··on Starbucks to Offer Free Wi-Fi Service
Awesome. Thanks.
al_james··on Starbucks to Offer Free Wi-Fi Service
Yeah, I might put together a browser plugin that does that to the current page URL when I hit a button!
al_james··on Starbucks to Offer Free Wi-Fi Service
Nice indeed... Does anyone know if there is a browser plugin (pref. Chrome) to bypass the paywalls of popular sites?
al_james··on Unit testing is teh suck, Urr.
Well, unit testing is only really efficient at finding certain kinds of bugs. Its good at protecting your core framework / system from breaking changes to its API, e.g. an engineer changing the result of a null being passed into a function. However, against the "I never expected anyone to do that" type of bugs, its next to useless. Only beta testing will save you there.
al_james··on What 64kb of Flash Can Do in 2009 -- Your Move, HTML5
Also, is it me or do these effects look awful? No antialiasing on my machine, lame Amiga era pseudo 3D effects and blurry type in a tiny screen resolution.

Yawn, yawn, yawn.

al_james··on What 64kb of Flash Can Do in 2009 -- Your Move, HTML5
Yawn. Hardly relevant to real web design use cases is it?
al_james··on RIP, Macintosh
Well, Mac is a mature product line. True it might not be at the cutting edge of Apple's business but it is a highly profitable income stream for Apple. So it is not going anywhere.

I suppose there is a possibility of iPad cannibalising MacBook sales, but its pretty much apples and oranges.

That said, I cant help thinking that they might do some kind of Apple desktop app store where they can keep 30% of the app revenue, but give developers access to a well integrated distribution channel.

al_james··on Safari 5
Yes, the first thing I did when trying Safari 5 was try to type a google search in the main address bar.

Its funny how quickly Chrome has reprogrammed me.
