akselmo··on Each Firefox download has a unique identifier
I would not download anything from Softonic. I know it's just an example but if you download anything from there you might get few surprises with the download.
akselmo··on LiBlast: A Libre Multiplayer FPS Game Built with Godot 4 and Blender
Love these types of projects! Will be very useful to anyone who wants to learn how to make multiplayer game.
akselmo··on Corners Don't Look Like That: Regarding Screenspace Ambient Occlusion (2012)
I always disable SSAO in games, I've never really cared for the effect that much and it often seems to eat a lot of resources.
akselmo··on Things you notice when you quit the news (2016)
I havent followed news or watched TV for years. Way happier this way. And if there is something I really must know, my friends tell me or I find out about it on my own (like reading official statements about covid for example).

News are just a business like any other, and I have never needed their services.

akselmo··on How I Built LoginWithHN
The one I see in the mirror every morning disagrees.
akselmo··on A career ending mistake
I'm still in very beginning of my career but I hope to eventually work on something open source. Something that is being used by many. Be it software library, business software or games industry.

Would be very cool to help the Linux gaming push that is happening and help to push it even more. But I don't think I have skills for that yet..

akselmo··on My Notebook System
Thats interesting to me since i cant for the life of me write anything down while being so organized. Most of my notes are sporadic writings whenever i cant sleep because my brain is stuck chugging out ideas.

If i had digital notebook that i could write by hand, and it all went to my nextcloud, i think i would use that more than typing things down with onscreen keyboard.

akselmo··on What I learned during my three days offline
I've deleted my twitter and reddit accounts. I have discord open but i barely read it, same with matrix which I use mostly with my fiancee. In games I disable chats often. I do use mastodon, but not as excessively as I used twitter. I also made this HN account recently because I felt that I need to talk to someone sometimes.

It certainly has made me happier to cut as much social media as possible out of my life.

I don't want to go full offline for many days or weeks (nor could, because of work). Many things I like are connected to internet and tech, and I don't mind it that much. Just need to remember to have breaks every now and then.

akselmo··on Filters to block and remove copycat-websites from DuckDuckGo, Google and other
Oh sweet, thank you. Been looking for something like this.
akselmo··on Facebook staff now to be known as “Metamates”
I just find it funny how this whole metaverse thing has been around since worlds.com and Second Life. Now FB took that and slapped VR on top of it.

I think that sex workers will rejoice about this, nobody else will really care, and "metamate" will mean something completely different in future.

akselmo··on I collect and read old computer manuals
Partial reason why I got into programming was because games I liked had map editors and mod support. At first the basics were fine, just making levels but the more and more I did them, the more power I wanted over the mods.. And thats when I got interested in programming. :)
akselmo··on Show HN: hue.tools – open-source toolbox for colors
Thank you, this is super useful!
akselmo··on A new wave of Linux applications
Agreed, definitely. OS should provide basic colorsheets that the apps use, and those sheets should be freely modifiable.

Which is why I really like KDE.

akselmo··on A new wave of Linux applications
I'm on Kubuntu (so KDE), been using it for over 6 months now. I am the kind of person that loves setting up the desktop and all the apps just like I want, so it has been perfect for me, although the defaults are pretty solid as well. The default Breeze theme also is really pretty, I went through all kinds of themes but eventually settled with Breeze due to how good it looks.
akselmo··on A new wave of Linux applications
I feel like partially the movement happened because some themes made the apps unusable and then instead of blaming the theming, users blamed thee app developers instead.
