akoncius··on Tell HN: Job interview canceled due to looming recession
exactly, you are paying for current skills. If employer is fine with current skills, and employee wants a better salary, which would require new skills, who should make effort?
akoncius··on Tell HN: Job interview canceled due to looming recession
well after education usually salary can be upgraded, so it’s a benefit for employee. if employee does not educate himself, he may stay the same level with no salary bumps. sucks for both parties I guess?
akoncius··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
look at gorbachev, he is still alive. so I don’t have high hopes that putin will be solved in natural ways any time soon.
akoncius··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
so.. you are saying that if you are attacked, don’t resist, and then there will be no conflict/war?
akoncius··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
and in some sense we right now observe failure of this proposal.

Russia was included in majority of international organizations; trade was increasing with Russia with hopes that they will start prospering and become less agressive than before. I think it was such sentiment especially from Germany and France, there were multiple cases of “we need to be friends with Russia, trade with it and everything will be great”.

what actually happened was that government of Russia took all those trade benefits, neglected their citizens and intentionally made them poor so they would be more depending on the government. everything was intentionally oppressive, abusive. how do you solve that?

akoncius··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
I’m not OP, but I will offer my point of view:

NATO is only defence in military sense from external threats.

Internal relationships are much broader: trade, laws, internal politics, multi-country alignment towards same goals, even goal definition etc. there is european parliament where representatives from all member countries gather and discuss a lot of different topics. none of that provides NATO.

akoncius··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
you forget / ignore another aspect of conflict: territorial disagreements or historical arguments. some countries or politicians may feel that area of other country supposed to belong to their country based on history or something but that other country is happy with how it is right now. and no amount of charity money or help will solve this.

as we have right now with Russia.

another aspect: EU is doing great job improving new member’s economy and standard of living but after 10 years or so people forget why their country is in better shape and take it for granted. or worse - some politicians might claim that without EU country would be even in better situation.

so.. I don’t think that spending money on random people will make them like you.

akoncius··on Neubrutalism is taking over the web?
in that case, why it is called 'brutalism' instead of 'brutism' ? I'm not implying you are wrong, but probably it's the reason of confusion:

* brutal - brutalism

* brut - brutism

akoncius··on What happens if you try to download and install Firefox on Windows
so.. in that case it means computer belings to MS even if I paid full price?
akoncius··on Microservices: Why Are We Doing This?
is it even relevant? usually people who are against microservices or react are against those not because they are “new” but because usually those are incorrectly chosen tools for the job.
akoncius··on We at $Famous_company Switched to $Hyped_technology
sounds about right! I got some of those vibes more than twice in my experience :D
akoncius··on Mozilla Rally
have you seen AWS/azure/GCP data transfer fees? mozilla would go bankrupt overnight
akoncius··on Switching from macOS to Pop_OS
https://elementary.io/ might be interesting to you if not looked already
akoncius··on Ask HN: What am I doing wrong?
some pointers: just invite to connect at least current colleagues, just to get ball rolling.

also: even if you don’t have much to add, describe in more detail what you have already done in that pisition, so recruiters/hiring managers will have better understanding where you are currently.

also also: linkedin profile has section “skills” where you select what you do. don’t skip that section, it is used in filters while searching potential candidates.

at your stage it would be massively helpful to have some kind of certifications if relevant (just as an example: symfony developer certificate, if you do PHP development), and so on.

and don’t get upset about those massive salaries mentioned on HN- the reason they are mentioned IS because those are big salaries. take a look at avg salaries in industry of your location and you will see real situation.

akoncius··on New Covid Variant 'Deltacron'
yeah, that’s what ai fear the most about omicron: it’s established that the more people get infected by covid, the more it mutates. so given that omicron spreads the fastest, we will get lots of mutations and variants.

so seems that the end is nowhere in sight…

akoncius··on Professional maintainers: a wake-up call
well actually they ARE providing value for shareholders by using opensource products instead of wasting thousands of human hours for reinventing the wheel.
akoncius··on Austria to declare nationwide lockdown for unvaccinated people
here in Lithuania we already have some cases when people were caught using fake/other people's QR code and got punished for it.

another case was that doctors were bribed to sign a document that person was vaccinated even if that person has not visited vaccination center. so yeah, there are attempts, but at the same time, law enforcement works its job sometimes.

akoncius··on Microsoft Edge GA on Linux
for me it's super annoying when I click on link inside of gmail app on iOS and it suggests at the bottom to install google chrome instead of using default browser . selected "don't show this again" many times, still I see that popup. annoying as hell
akoncius··on Apple Silicon Macs can't boot from external drive if internal drive failed
well what about macbook pro series? professionals constantly WANT to have ability to upgrade devices down the road, but Apple simply denies it.
akoncius··on Disable Google Drive drive letter
IMO it is at minimum grey area when company introduces “free unlimited/little limits” while having clear understanding that it is not sustainable and then start charging people after they have moved all their archives to gDrive.

it is legal, but not good either.

akoncius··on PalmOS on Raspberry Pi
yes, was talking about webOS and palm Pre devices
akoncius··on PalmOS on Raspberry Pi
palmOS and nokia n9 are the most promising and the most failed projects in the last decade i think. it had so much potential but failed miserably.. I would really want to live in alternate reality where these two projects are successful :(
akoncius··on Three near-identical Boris Vishnevskys on St Petersburg election ballot
spectacle is important here. it’s important for Putin to claim that people chose him, he is a leader of population by choice, not force.

look at Belarus, when stuff became too obvious, people started to display dissatisfaction. That is Putin’s fear IMO.

akoncius··on Who Owns the US National Debt?
so main difference is kinda transparency?

everything else matches. you (old investor) are receiving profits from new investors. and in some countries retirement money is speculative matter for politicians (vote for me I will increase retirement payments).

akoncius··on Is Hacker News a good predictor of future tech trends?
better formula would be “in next 20 years we will have economic downturn”

:D

akoncius··on World’s first lab-grown meat facility pumps out 5k burgers per day
"back in my days, salmonella wasn't a big deal anyway, these younglins are too fragile in modern times"
akoncius··on World’s first lab-grown meat facility pumps out 5k burgers per day
> Will we get to the point where statues of now-famous people are pulled down because they ate animals?

Could you tell me any case where statue of famous people were pulled down because they used cotton products made by slaves?

eating meat is not equal to agitating for keeping slavery. so I think meat eaters are safe :)

on the other hand, hardcore people who insist on killing animals without consideration for alternatives could be condemned later after 50 years or something, but I think it's fine. bigger problem is when people keep insisting on immoral things without consideration of alternatives.

overall it's really interesting to see such a big focus on "cancel culture" in this comment.

akoncius··on New Firefox
man, it sucks to see such stories. especially for such big scale projects/products accessibility should be high priority :(
akoncius··on Klarna users are being signed in to random accounts
seems like you have issues with vocabulary - it clearly indicates that problems are with authentication, not authorization :D each time klarna identifies user as different user.
akoncius··on Dear EU: Please Don't Ruin the Root
and your point is ... ?

also: even if there are some things which do not rely on DNS, but proportionally speaking majority of things do rely on DNS - web, email, file sharing, chats, calls, you name it. it already gets to significant majority of internet activities, so ... your point is not clear.
