akkat··on Burger King makes an ad about Net Neutrality
This ad only makes it seem ridiculous because of the high prices of the hamburgers. However there are places such as Amazon that charge extra for faster delivery. Net neutrality may be right, but the ad misses the point.
akkat··on Employees at Practice Fusion got nothing as execs pocketed millions
And if your founder fails (like most startups) and ends up wasting several years earning no income then you get to have had a modest job for however long the founder was able to last
akkat··on Show HN: A cryptocurrency news scraper inspired by Hacker News
Any plans on making the inverse?
akkat··on Indefinite solitary confinement in Canadian prisons ruled unconstitutional
There are a few stories similar to that but take place in Soviet Russia. Natan Sharansky became really good at chess during his 9 years in prison and Eliyahu Rips developed a previously unsolved mathematical proof during his 2 years.
akkat··on Your company can increase voter turnout: make Election Day a company holiday
I don't know the answer but in Israel election day is a holiday. The common stigma is that you vote in the morning and then have a barbeque in the afternoon. I don't know whether it would work the same way in the US, but that's how it is in one country.
akkat··on What It Felt Like in Hawaii When Warning of an In-Bound Missile Arrived
I have friend who in Jerusalem Israel during the second intifada. Terrorists were blowing themselves up on busses killing or maiming nearly everyone on the bus. Yet the locals continued to take busses because they needed to get to school or work and stopping normal life until after the terrorism stopped was out of the question. Not everyone can simply go on a vacation until everything fixes itself.
akkat··on Tea if by sea, cha if by land: Why the world only has two words for tea
I checked and you are correct.
akkat··on Tea if by sea, cha if by land: Why the world only has two words for tea
In Hebrew it is completely different מסעדה or mis'adah
akkat··on Seattle's Minimum Wage Killed the 'Five-Dollar Footlong'
I'm pretty right wing and have opinions about minimum wage that a lot of other hn users would disagree with, but this article is garbage. Basically one store owner said that he can't afford to offer the new promotion because of the minimum wage and other social spendings. That is all the facts we are given. Of course another reason could be because people don't want that product, or that the store owner isn't running the store as efficiently as other nearby stores are. The article then criticises the new sugar tax because the cost of soda is higher. Of course the price of soda is higher, that is the intention.
akkat··on How Oprah Winfrey Helped Create Our Irrational, Pseudoscientific Fantasyland
> Just curious, if it comes to Trump v Oprah 2020, how many of you currently in America would consider starting or joining a venture outside the US?

Based on the amount of people who promised to move to Canada if Trump won, my guess is next to nothing.

akkat··on How Oprah Winfrey Helped Create Our Irrational, Pseudoscientific Fantasyland
It is possible that it is simply an attack peace but I don't think so. Opera is now a person of greater interest. That means that more people are likely to read an article about her. Therefore news sites want to write things about her.
akkat··on Google Pay
I can't compare it to how it was before but when I lived in my old country I bought something on Google play and now that I am in my new country I cannot download anything that is restricted to that country. There is no way that I can revert to how it was before I gave Google my credit card information. What I can do is give Google my new credit card information, but I don't want to do that simply to download a free country restricted app. What I ended up doing was making a new google play account and not purchasing anything through Google.
akkat··on Google Pay
I bought something from Google play when I was living in country x and now that I live in country y I cannot install anything that is limited to country y. In order to get Google to "forget" that I lived in country x I would have to give Google my credit card number that is located in country y. I don't want to change my address, all I want to do is make Google "forget" my old address.

Because of that I refuse to buy anything with my Google account

akkat··on SuperMeat raises $3M for lab-grown chicken
For the same reason it is "okay" for a cat to rape another cat but it is not okay for humans to do that.
akkat··on Firefox Focus: A Fast Private Mobile Browser from Mozilla
That is exactly the issue, focus doesn't block enough. I am not at home so I cannot give you a visual comparison but when googling "Kindle" with ublock origin the first link I see is to the Amazon website, while on focus I see 3 big ads that require me to scroll down to see the search results. Obviously this is a constructed example but there are other websites (I can't remember which exactly) with lots of ads that origin doesn't block.
akkat··on Firefox Focus: A Fast Private Mobile Browser from Mozilla
I have been using Firefox focus for a while and I have 2 main problems with it. The adblocker is worse than ublock origin (eg. try to google Kindle) and there is no simple way to use tabs. I still use it to open links, but a lot of the time I end up having focus open it on Firefox.
akkat··on DC’s war on rats goes digital
Come to Jerusalem if you want to see the effects of that. There are lots of stray cats that leave bigger messes than rats and fight bigger animals (pets) than rats. If you want to think of releasing dogs to to catch the cat, then look at Moscow. If you then want to release a goat, then you should read "The Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly"
akkat··on The Story of the Gömböc (2009)
Do you know where she got it? I could only find them for sale for over 100 euros
akkat··on What Could Have Entered the Public Domain on January 1, 2018
That's actually a really good idea. Of course it is probably (unfortunately) politically impossible.
akkat··on Ask HN: 2018 resolutions?
Good luck on learning a new language. Be careful that when writing in Spanish you also have someone check that your Spanish is correct. Otherwise, you may be practising something wrong.
akkat··on Nepal bans solo climbers from Mount Everest
How about forcing them to leave some money as collateral or forcing climbers to get insurance like with scuba divers?
akkat··on Israeli Players Banned from World Chess Championship in Saudi Arabia
Allowing players from all over the world to attend one event is very different than allowing anyone to get permanent residency.
akkat··on Facebook’s Political Unit Enables Propaganda
> This never happened when Obama or the DNC

Except of course when CNN gave the debate questions to Hillary in advance. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/11/07/do...

akkat··on A Brainfuck interpreter inside a single printf statement
This works by taking advantage of a format string exploit. It is by definition undefined behavior. It just so happens that this behavior is constant an gives the ability to change the flow of the program. At least in the popular glibc. However if someone were to rewrite how printf works but didn't allow the format string vulnerability, it would still be a valid c compiler.
akkat··on Nearly 5M Americans in Default on Student Loans
What's the reason for that. I know administrative staff like that that are getting paid, but what would the current one decide to hire more staff? Unless there was some benefit the staff would prefer to keep the money for themselves rather than hire more people.
akkat··on US drugmaker raises price of vitamins by more than 800%
The article (at least bob_theslob646 unpaywalled version) says that you can buy one kind online for $5 for 100 tablets. However it is not FDA approved so it is riskier.
akkat··on Cards Against Humanity Redistributes Your Wealth
I'm not complaining. I just think that it's interesting to see the demographics of the winners.

On another note, I can understand why single moms would have more expenses. But why would a woman who is not a mom have more expenses?

akkat··on The fifth hyperfactorial: 5⁵ × 4⁴ × 3³ × 2² × 1¹ milliseconds is exactly 1 day
But that's what I don't understand. Either God 'A' who is believed by Religion 'X' exists or doesn't exist. If 'A' exists, then even if 'X' didn't believe in 'A', 'A' would still exist. (At least assuming that 'X' is a subset of all religions that I know) If 'A' doesn't exist then 'X' believing in it doesn't make 'A' exist anymore.

I can't think of any religion where pure belief of people cause deities pop into existence. Unless of course you are calling the fact that people talk about the deity as popping them into existence. In that case, you can say that JK Rowling caused Voldemort to pop into existence (how evil of her).

akkat··on Cards Against Humanity Redistributes Your Wealth
> We used recipients’ race, gender, and education levels to estimate incomes using Bureau of Labor Statistics data from 2015.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that all pictures of the $1000 winners have women.

akkat··on The fifth hyperfactorial: 5⁵ × 4⁴ × 3³ × 2² × 1¹ milliseconds is exactly 1 day
> and without faith, I am nothing.

Care to elaborate? I think virtually all religions believe that God existed before humans and therefore existed when no one had faith in God.
