akerro··on Take Gitlab to the command line with GLab, an open-source Gitlab CLI tool
There are ways, but:

1. I need to run gitlab ci myself on my host(s)

2. My host must be logged in to docker hub

3. Gitlab CI must run as privileged container

4. There are more hacks required to let gitlabci build the image and push as me.

on github you just authorize docker-hub to get webhooks from github, and that's it, it does the rest itself.

I maintain a bunch of docker images that are purposed to run on gitlab ci, they are obviously hosted on github because only github has push-event integrations with docker hub.

I make a push, docker hub builds and publishes the image, the image is only pulled by gitlab ci.

Gitlab is great, but it lacks many popular integrations that must come from not-gitlab.

akerro··on Amazon met with startups about investing, then launched competing products
Amazon does it also with popular independent sellers. I know a motorcycle shop that was selling top quality products. Amazon representative contacted him if he would like to sell on Amazon, showed him offers how to stock and sell items. Amazon started a brand with the same name and their products were higher in search, were poor quality China made, jackets that were falling apart within a year. For the same price! Angry consumers targeted their anger to the real website leaving negative comments, not on Amazon! Shop owner had to change his brand after 18 years of being in business, as legal battle against Amazon would cost him more than the business had in stock.

This archive contains JHipster and openapi, but I'm failing to understand one thing. Does it also contains OS, dependencies, compilers, linkers etc? What's a point of just storing the jhipster without its node and maven dependencies? Why store the code you won't be able to compile and execute?

Depending on your needs, compromise on GPU and use SSD instead HDD.

Take GPU like this one RX 570 https://www.newegg.com/sapphire-radeon-rx-570-100412p4gitxl/...

it's still good enough for many games, for me it's fine even with The Witcher 3, sure, not the top tier, but I also looked for energy efficient PC. As low energy Ryzens are hard to get, I took 5 3600 and compromised on GPU, storage and mobo.

akerro··on Pulsar vs. Kafka
Pulsar is more flexible and fault-tolerant. For me the most important thing is client can request log queue starting from specific log by id, it has better retrying mechanisms for logs that failed to be processed. But it has absurdly bad documentation. I had to learn many things about Pulsar by downloading src of their java library and just reading the code. Documentation on starting bookie, zookie, pulsar, pulsar-proxy cluster was non-existent, and making it work like in their architectural diagram was a week of work and experiments, compared to literally 2 hours spent in Kafka.

Bookkeeper has/had even worse documentation and setup. When I used it bookie couldn't have mounted directory for log storage, so it's not really that persistent as they say. Before restarting bookie node it has/had to be reformatted to allow bookie instance to re-use logs saved on disk. The whole "log are persisted" is true, but they don't say that you can't simple mount them in docker and restart your PC to it.

Pulsar is good when you get it working. Documentation is really bad and it's hard to make it work. All the super-positive articles about pulsar are sponsored (streamnative and yahoo) and biased to make pulsar look much, much, MUCH SIMPLER than it actually is.

akerro··on Evidence-based Software Engineering – book beta
>If you can't capture it in 314 pages, you might be writing less of a universal book than intended.

I dont find this book to be universal, this topic is so wide that maybe 30 000 pages won't be enough. Some CS books are >1500 pages look at the whole series "the art of computer programming"

akerro··on Teleport 4.3: Modern Replacement for OpenSSH
Why is this "modern replacement for OpenSSH" when people use ssh specifically because it's so simple and doesn't have webui? There have been many ssh webuis in the last decade, none of them were "replacements" of ssh, just wrappers for people scared of terminals. What exactly does it do that 20 other ssh wrappers (or even portainer for containers) don't?
