ajvs··on U.S. pushes Japan and other allies to join China chip curbs
Ah yes, self-determination is what they say to all those countries they illegally invaded.
ajvs··on Aegis Authenticator – Secure 2FA App for Android
andOTP isn't really being maintained anymore, which is why I switched recently.
ajvs··on Potluck: Dynamic documents as personal software
Logseq is open-source and it looks like it has all the same features in it's core software and plugin ecosystem.
ajvs··on Twitter Limits Content-Enforcement Tools as US Election Looms
Good. Hopefully we won't get a repeat of censorship like the Hunter Biden laptop story ever again.
ajvs··on Wikipedians question Wikimedia fundraising ethics after “somewhat-viral” tweet
So because they're donating to your political leaning, it's fine. Do realise that half the population leans the opposite way to you, and you'll see why encouraging more organisations to get political is a disastrous thing for society.
ajvs··on Lula defeats Bolsonaro to again become Brazil’s president
With the kind of crowds Bolsonaro attracts compared to Luis I find this highly suspect.
ajvs··on Meta to sell Giphy after UK watchdog confirms ruling
The UK doesn't want companies with excessive monopoly power operating in their country. What's difficult to understand about that?
ajvs··on Fast file synchronization and network forwarding for remote development
Thanks, very interesting read. One-sided installation and low-latency sound particularly appealing.

Two features I didn't see addressed:

- Is there a GUI of any kind? I use Syncthing's web GUI + a tray applet for monitoring syncing on desktop, and on mobile there's an app for syncing also. Makes it easy to detect if there's a problem with any of the folders being synced, and easy to add new folders this way also.

- Is there an equivalent to Syncthing's untrusted devices feature? It basically allows for client-side encrypting the files, so you can have say one remote with the encrypted files and another remote with unencrypted files.

ajvs··on Shortcat – Manipulate macOS masterfully, minus the mouse
Last week I installed Vim-like keyboard navigation extensions for several apps (Vimium on Firefox, VSCodeVim on Visual Studio Code, Vim Shortcuts for Logseq), would love to see one for the Linux desktop itself but I don't think it exists.
ajvs··on Fast file synchronization and network forwarding for remote development
How does it compare to syncthing?
ajvs··on Logseq: Privacy-First, Joyful Platform for Knowledge Management
Hypothes.is or WorldBrain's Memex is what you're looking for (they enable social annotation of the web).
ajvs··on Logseq: Privacy-First, Joyful Platform for Knowledge Management
Used WorkFlowy for about 7 years, dropped it when I got tired of the lack of feature updates, no end-to-end encryption and only Dropbox for automatic backups.
ajvs··on Logseq: Privacy-First, Joyful Platform for Knowledge Management
Having used other note taking software for the past decade (in particular outliners) Logseq is my new favourite, I just wish they'd focus on performance issues though.

Indexing and general responsiveness slows down massively once you have a few million words stored, and you have to break up your data into many smaller notes or you'll suffer even greater slowdown. Despite this I'm putting up with it at the moment because they seem to be making good progress improving the app and it's open-source unlike many of their competitors.

ajvs··on Ask HN: What's a Good SMS App for Android?
Hasn't been updated in 3 years.
ajvs··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
Google doesn't allow 3rd-party apps to access the RCS API.
ajvs··on Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro and Google Pixel Watch
Does this one finally have video output over USB (AKA DisplayPort Alternate Mode)?

I know Google don't make a good Samsung DeX equivalent of their own but there are third-party apps which can provide a usable experience, and they remain unusable if Pixels still don't have this feature.

ajvs··on Google officially launches Equiano subsea cable
Open internet? With all their walled gardens and filter bubbles the idea is pretty laughable from Google.
ajvs··on Elon Musk moves ahead with Twitter deal in 13D filing
It's already a woke echo chamber. Anything he can do to change that will make it less of a shithole.
ajvs··on Stadia died because no one trusts Google
As a GFN user for the past 14 months I disagree. It's more than acceptable performance even when playing competitive multiplayer games like League of Legends and Planetside 2.

I do agree however that Stadia sucked as a product. Nobody was going to buy into their ecosystem if they can't opt to download the games onto their own PCs like Steam. Too much lock-in without that aspect, and without any guarantees that they were going to refund customers if Stadia ever sunk it just made it DOA

ajvs··on Google postpones MV2 shutoff in Chrome stable to June 2023
It's not recommended because it contributes to Google's Chromium browser engine hegemony. Use Firefox for a real alternative.
ajvs··on Google postpones MV2 shutoff in Chrome stable to June 2023
> The reality is that ad blockers will continue to work to a significant extent that they do today.

Completely false. Compare the difference between uBlock Origin on Firefox MV2 vs uBlock Origin Lite MV3 on Chrome and there's a massive loss of functionality.

ajvs··on Extending org-mode to handle YouTube links
For anyone who bounced off org-mode due to it's limitations (e.g. mobile apps for it suck) I'd recommend Logseq, it's an open-source outliner with a plugin ecosystem and even supports org-mode.
ajvs··on President Putin has announced a partial mobilization in Russia
Well they're still not having the energy crisis and inflation of the West, so at this rate it seems likely they'll maintain this win.
ajvs··on LibRedirect: Redirect YouTube, Twitter, Instagram to privacy friendly services
Because you can add arbitrary instances so the extension needs access to anything.
ajvs··on LibRedirect: Redirect YouTube, Twitter, Instagram to privacy friendly services
I remember reading a while back about how some intelligence agency uses the browsing history of individual users to correlate their interests and build a profile on them. Either way, it's best to not centralise this data (or make yourself hard to fingerprint).
ajvs··on Why do so many kids need glasses now?
Wearing "corrective" glasses is anything but. Mainstream optometry exists to keep you a paying customer, not cure you.

"[…] to humans predicts that natural emmetropization will be inhibited in neonates by early intervention with prescription lenses, and that refractive correction of myopia will lead to accelerated progression"[1]

ajvs··on U.S. appeals court rejects big tech’s right to regulate online speech
Or following the mail example, adopt a spam control mechanism that doesn't require coding it yourself.
ajvs··on Ask HN: What games are you having fun with?
Magic: The Gathering is fantastic collectible card game on various platforms.

- MTG Arena if you want a Hearthstone-like experience (free, great animations/sounds, but microtransactions or grinding to stay competitive)

- untap.in or Tabletop Simulator for completely free, though a rules engine doesn't exist so you'll need to know the rules properly yourself

- MTG Online which includes a rules engine but you'll need to pay for cards

- XMage which is free and includes a rules engine, but the UX is the worst of the above

I play mostly Arena, with a bit of untap when I want to play Commander/EDH.

Does anybody know the legality of this for other countries' border forces? Is there a list anywhere?
