ajryan··on Ask HN: I'm writing a book about white-collar drug use, including tech sector
Suddenly ceasing stimulants does not involve nearly as acute or prolonged a withdrawal as opiates. There's no risk of seizures like there is with benzos. Your dopamine receptors will reset their tolerance much quicker than the 6 months I see cited throughout this thread. I have stopped stimulants many times with no more than a 1 week (maybe 10 day max) period of physical dependence symptoms.

When people experienced prolonged withdrawal symptoms from ceasing stimulants, I think it is usually due to being forced to confront life conditions that were being avoided.

Probably a mobile-only behavior.

ajryan··on The One Product You Should Buy Online: Eyeglasses
The thing about portrait mode is that it changes the orientation of the subpixels, and a lot of apps don't support anything but horizontal R-G-B. Text antialiasing ends up with halos.
ajryan··on Why you should join the .NET Core and ASP.NET Core train
LINQ to SQL is pretty poor in my opinion, plus it's no longer maintained and bugs aren't fixed[0].

ajryan··on Why you should join the .NET Core and ASP.NET Core train
When was the last time you checked out the open-source lib situation in .NET? I haven't had an issue with this in a long time (check out https://www.nuget.org).

On your second point, isn't that a good thing?

Will the synthetic enzyme be a direct substitute in the standard LAL enzyme chain? Or will it be an alternative reaction like Lonza's PyroGene?
ajryan··on Biomedical companies bleed 500k horseshoe crabs a year
I was a software developer at a company that produces LAL-based endotoxin tests. The best alternative[0] is an enzyme produced recombinantly in insect cells. It triggers an enzymatic reaction similar to LAL's (but more complicated).

It is effective for testing most of the same products as LAL, and it has been accepted as an "alternative method" by the FDA and European Pharmacopeia. That means it can be used but with more extensive, expensive validation testing. There are some products it's not compatible with, and there is a small set of products that are more easily tested with the alternative enzyme.

Also interesting that the article doesn't mention the standard before the LAL method was discovered: rabbits were injected with the test material and monitored for developing a fever.

ajryan··on Bose Hearphones
I have read that NMDA agonists (DXM, Ketamine, PCP, other arylcyclohexamines) work pretty well for this. Anecdotally, their withdrawal symptoms include tinnitus so I'm not surprised the inverse could be true.

It also looks like more specific NMDA agonists are being developed as a treatment? http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal....

ajryan··on Research into psychedelics, shut down for decades, is yielding results (2015)
Isn't that exactly what these studies are doing?

The burden isn't to prove that there are no side-effects, just that their rate and severity are sufficiently low.

ajryan··on Research into psychedelics, shut down for decades, is yielding results (2015)
There are many lesser-known psychedlics with scarily-low lethal doses. Bromo-dragonfly and some *-NBOMe compounds are a few that killed people recently. High doses of DOC can cause extreme vasoconstriction in extremeties, resulting in necrosis. https://psychonautwiki.org is a good site for investigating health risks.
ajryan··on Research into psychedelics, shut down for decades, is yielding results (2015)
In terms of dose-reponse, 100 micrograms of LSD produces effects roughly as strong as 20 milligrams of psilocybin.

In terms of subjective perception of the immersion or "pushiness" of the experience, I expect almost all users experienced with both compounds would rate LSD as stronger.

Anyone interested psychedelic users' perspectives on harm reduction, health benefits, and risks should check out http://erowid.org and http://bluelight.org (especially the Psychedelic Drug Discussion subforum).
