aiyodev··on Google Employee Alleges Discrimination Against Pregnant Women in Viral Memo
It’s the human resource’s department’s job to protect the company from liability. If they’re not protecting the company from renegade managers they’re not doing a very good job.
aiyodev··on Google Employee Alleges Discrimination Against Pregnant Women in Viral Memo
I’m curious how you reconcile the admission that you work at a place with bigoted witch hunts with the claim that you’ve never experienced any toxicity. What is your position on the war with Eastasia?
aiyodev··on Amazon Is a Monopoly
In the 2000s, the US federal government used anti-trust to keep local and state governments from passing laws banning internet sales of products. If they hadn’t done this Amazon would have never has the success it has. It’s only fair that the government stops Amazon’s anti-competitive behavior as well. Big companies should compete with small companies and customers should choose the winner.
aiyodev··on Terminating Service for 8Chan
Correction: Cloudfare wasn't a government until the moment they started governing.
aiyodev··on Terminating Service for 8Chan
And now they have the responsibility of policing every website that uses their service to avoid tacitly supporting controversial content.
aiyodev··on E3 accidentally leaks personal details of journalists, YouTubers and analysts
Yes. A film fan shot the president.
aiyodev··on Capital One Says Breach Hit 100M Individuals in U.S
So, in other words, you’re asking the government “what’s in your docket?”
aiyodev··on Why Lie Detector Tests Can’t Be Trusted
The reason why we settled on the polygraph and not something else is because of William Marston. He invented the early polygraph after noticing his wife’s blood pressure rose when she was angry. He also created Wonder Woman who carries a whip that makes people tell the truth. In the 1930’s he wrote a book advocating for the use of the polygraph by law enforcement. Gillette hired him for an advertising campaign to “prove” they had better razors. The public started to believe in it’s effectiveness which allowed it to start coercing confessions.

We might as well be determining guilt and innocence with a block of Kryptonite or by flipping a batarang. It’s ridiculous that it is still allowed.

aiyodev··on Browser extensions are underrated: the promise of hackable software
Agreed. Those who think extensions are harmless clearly have their heads in the butts.
aiyodev··on How I got my username on nearly every site
Not op but I think he means that he would get flooded with login attempt/password reset attempt emails from other sites when a username is leaked. Even though his password is likely safe, he would still have to log into each one of these services and update the password to be sure.

Let’s hope they remember to close the hatch before takeoff.

aiyodev··on Avoiding Webscraping Throttling Using Python and Tor as a Proxy
You could easily put your pricing info on a single page. You’re not paying for bandwidth. You’re paying for obscuring information. You’re paying for going against the purpose and spirit of the internet.
aiyodev··on What If Life Did Not Originate on Earth?
Unfortunately, we cannot be certain life on other planets in our solar system did not originate on our own. It has been determined that meteor that killed the dinosaurs possibly seeded planets and mas far out as Saturn with microbes.
aiyodev··on It's Never Too Late to Be Successful and Happy
That’s all well and good but I don’t see how having confidence will help. When you’re sitting in an interview being questioned why you’re 40 applying for an entry level position are you supposed to explain that they’re wrong for asking? Success is a function of social status and higher class people don’t have the setbacks you find on poor people’s resumes. You can waste years studying to be a software engineer and end up unemployed because you’re too old.
aiyodev··on Run Your Own Website
This seems like a good place to ask. Are there any free and reliable services to notify you when your website/web service is unavailable?
aiyodev··on For 20 Years the Nuclear Launch Code at US Minuteman Silos Was 00000000
We need a word for urban myths that refuse to die because they fit a popular opinion.
aiyodev··on Where Tesla skeptics are misguided
I noticed there’s no mention of the multiple executives jumping ship.
aiyodev··on YouTube bans content “showing users how to bypass secure computer systems”
A government is an organization that governs. Any organization that polices it's customers/users beyond what the law requires them to is acting as a government. YouTube crossed that line a long time ago. Like home owners associations, YouTube is a government and should be forced by courts to recognize constitutional protections of civil liberties.
aiyodev··on Open Letter from the OpenID Foundation to Apple Regarding Sign in with Apple
For reference, it’s also about 18 months of salary at median wage.
aiyodev··on Pentagon has a laser that can identify people at a distance by their heartbeat
I see people are pointing out the 95% accuracy. I think it’s worth reminding everyone that the current American criteria for killing people with drone strikes requires that they 1) be male and 2) appear from orbit to be above a certain height. There’s no requirement to have someone on the ground to pick out targets or make sure afterwards that the right person was killed.
aiyodev··on Mailchimp bans anti-vaccination content
Everyone has the right, not everyone has government protection of the right.
aiyodev··on Mailchimp bans anti-vaccination content
Where did this nonsense get started?

Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are rights that everyone has because they are human.

The first amendment is one protection of these rights that prevents the violation of these rights by the US government.

People still have freedom of speech and freedom of expression when dealing with non-government organizations. It’s a responsibility of these organization to respect these rights. Customers should refuse to do business with companies that do not.

aiyodev··on Hedge funds use satellite images to beat Wall Street
Retailers should try painting images of cars in their parking lots.
aiyodev··on What a deepfake video of Mark Zuckerberg reveals about how we're manipulated
Unfortunately, history proves this wrong. The average person on the street won’t have plausible deniability because deepfakes won’t be good enough to avoid detection. But rich and powerful people and governments will be able to create undetectable deepfakes to fool the public while denying such a thing is possible.
aiyodev··on What’s this xfinitywifi network and why do I keep connecting? (2016)
But that’s still giving an iot device access to my router and allowing it to connect to the internet with the same public ip address as the rest of my devices. I would rather not take the chance.
aiyodev··on The worst morale-boosting gesture I've experienced
Got an email saying we were getting rewarded with pizza for lunch. My desk was near the door. I saw the pizza delivery guy bring in the stacks of pizzas and put them in the conference room. A group of supervisors came to supervise the pizza delivery. Supervisors wore casual attire. Then a man came who must have been their boss because he wore a button up short. Then a man with a shirt and tie. Then a man in a suit. Finally, a man in an expensive suit I recognized as the VP. Everyone assembled waited for him as he looked at the stacks of pizzas, said something, and nodded. The supervisors then put the boxes on carts and started to distribute them. I finally got my two slices of cold pizza over an hour after they were delivered. Felt so appreciated.

It’s also great for iot devices. Gives them access to the internet with no access to other devices in your home. You do have to spoof their mac address on a device with a browser to get them online though.
