There ought to be a Latin letter with the same meaning as a middle-finger for brevity. Emoji are just too inconvenient.

What yall be talkin about, usin all them big, five-dollar, city words? Not one of them "cowboys" with a big hat and no cattle, I hope? ;)

My mom's extended family has an actual long-horn herd around Seguin, so they get a pass on wearing boots and a Stetson. Meanwhile, my upstairs, sociopathic yuppie, mid-West hipster transplant neighbor walks around in cowboy boots on a solid floor for no reason (and no cattle) and has a man-bun despite it going out of fashion about 2016. I wouldn't even pretend to be a "cowboy" on Friday nights without actually roping and herding cattle, otherwise I'd feel like a poser.

:Waves from ATX by way of SJC; parents by way of San Anton; grandparents by way of Nocona, Vernon, and Wichita Falls:

I once made a car-full of IITians LTAOs at my "Indian" accent that they asked me to do when I normally don't. I grew-up with numerous accented English-speakers, and I found Indian was the easiest. I can't do Scottish, Welsh, or Irish to save my life.
airhead969··on Primates change their 'accent' to avoid conflict
So that's why my mom gets a Texan accent around her family. LOL. No, I'm serious. She doesn't normally until she's around certain extended family members.

Edit: She has a neutral accent normally and then switches on Texan mode after being with certain family for awhile. My ears are like "Mom, are you Texan now or what?"

airhead969··on Why Is JRuby Slow?
There are/were imperfect cheats to reduce startup times like nailgun, drip, and spork.

The biggest gotchas in JRuby are finding alternatives to native extensions and memory use. What's neat is plugging into JMX from Ruby land.

airhead969··on Why Russians do not smile (2002)
Regardless that I look Russian but not, I guess this is one of many cultural reasons why I get along with them so well. Being socially forced to smile and be positive all of the time (toxic positivity) seems fake and mentally-unhealthy to me. I understand wanting to brighten other people's day but to sustain manic/positive/energetic appearance all of the time and towards everyone sounds exhausting.

The other thing I like about Russian culture is, like a cardiologist or a brain surgeon, finding humor in everything (brain surgeons may find less than they were expecting but they're an optimistic bunch).

A CIA agent is sent on a mission in Moscow.

He goes to a grocery store and writes down in his diary "There is no food".

He then goes to a clothes shop and puts down in the diary "There are no shoes".

He leaves the shop, and a KGB agent waiting for him outside says: "You know, 10 years ago we would have shot you for that."

The CIA agent writes in his diary "There are no bullets".

Would Ruby be out-of-the-question on religious or technical grounds? ;-P

Disclaimer disclaimer: Language religious wars are dumb, unless we're talking about Rust. I can't find too much bad to say about it other than it doesn't look like Pony. :D Let me go build a programming language with implicit lifetimes and no GC as something no one will ever use. Hang on... gimme a minute.

GPFS, Lustre, Panasas (PanFS / pNFS), BeeGFS are just about the only games in town for HPC pFSes. OrangeFS maybe.

Also, I wouldn't want their bills for chilled water or electricity. My puny 96-thread EPYC ranges from 300 - 850 W and heats my room. :B

It can also be used to mutate hard game state (I wouldn't try it with dynamic, interpolated values like object position, angle, acceleration, or velocity.)

There are many other methods, some are more precise and compressible than others:

airhead969··on Co-founders tried to reduce my equity after company was accepted into YC
Yep. I would want to hold the CEO's passport and bank account credentials because they seem like a flight risk.

(Something similar happened to a friend of mine who lost a $300k final payment because their friend/roommate took it and fled the country.)

airhead969··on Co-founders tried to reduce my equity after company was accepted into YC
It doesn't help in retrospect of unfortunate circumstances, but it does for the future and the big picture:

Don't be friends, or get "in-bed," with greedy, selfish a*holes. Sales is notorious for attracting people with win-lose, psycho/sociopathic tendencies that would destroy a venture because they can't help themselves. In the end, their myopia and morale-murdering behaviors win 95% equity in a dumpster fire where they poured the gas and they threw the lit match. They're losers. Avoid these kinds of people as much as possible.

airhead969··on I quit my job to focus on SerenityOS full time
OMG. That reminds me of the Xen dude, of a potential hire at a startup who demanded "make it a big number" salary, and countless people who know some about one domain assuming their ex-food doesn't emanate odor.

Also, there's the sociological fallacy of assuming the biggest jerk must be the most talented, when it may well be a façade to impress people. There are some talented jerks, but all the talent in the world doesn't matter if no one will work with you.

PS: Shout-out to Steve Kablink for being awesome.

Sorry! I thought that were obvious by mentioning voting. Mea culpa.
airhead969··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
That's true. If a community platform's moderation were more professional like the example I used of bar exam graders, who grade practice samples and do other calibration exercises, it would improve the signal and tend to reduce biases if the culture were one of strict professionalism.
airhead969··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
I'm scratching my head on this one. There are passive-aggressive haters in the world, but I don't see much of that around here. People around these parts usually keep their biases to themselves or outright flaunt them and get hammered for it.

$5 words instead of plain speak is an accessibility problem but anti-intellectualism never solved anything. Maybe inferiority feelings or catastrophizing? Do what I do, subscribe to the Merriam-Webster Word of the Day. :) Go through the GRE prep materials if you want a bigger vocab. Heck, I would get a used unabridged dictionary and make it a point to work from cover-to-cover. Watch those obnubilated smarty-pants shudder in fear. :)

I remember making a CGI (that's an ancient, simple server backend for the young-ins) IM chat in 1996. It used the keep connection open trick present in HTTP 1.0 and a tiny bit of Netscape JS.

Seems like bikeshedding on an irrelevant tangent. I'm trying to do whatever this gender-sensitive thing is that I'll get crap for if I do or don't do. Next, the safety pins will call Romance languages sexist for having gendered words.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

No search engine spidering so discussions aren't monetized or ripped-off, discussions can be freer (half-way to being YC dinners), and potentially greater incentives to apply.

Somewhere like Iceland or Greenland.

airhead969··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
Absolutely.

I think there's a virtuous spiral when the one (specific platform features, philosophy, and conventions) reinforces the other (people's perceptions, attitudes, and interactions), and people care about excellence.

The for-profit, outrage-seeking, clickbait model of "engagement" is the opposite of that.

We can't fix everything with technology (if there's still people problems) or with good people (if the platform fails them) alone.

airhead969··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
I have a dream that one day, there will be no political parties, only nuanced, informed debate on stand-alone issues. Tribal groupthink is one of my pet peeves (isn't that the tao of flat-earthers?) because it often places loyalty over honesty. Elections are almost as bad because they've devolved into celebrity popularity contests.

There is only one party in the United States, the Property Party, and it has two right wings: Republican and Democrat. Republicans are a bit stupider, more rigid, more doctrinaire in their laissez-faire capitalism than the Democrats, who are cuter, prettier, a bit more corrupt — until recently - and more willing than the Republicans to make small adjustments when the poor, the black, the anti-imperialists get out of hand. But, essentially, there is no difference between the two parties.

Our only political party has two right wings, one called Republican, the other Democratic. But Henry Adams figured all that out back in the 1890s. "We have a single system," he wrote, and "in that system the only question is the price at which the proletariat is to be bought and sold, the bread and circuses.

― Gore Vidal

Maybe it's me, but I don't think about participants' gender or if there's enough/too much of any particular attribute group. I infer your point is that HN extends well-beyond the stereotypical academic, software engineer, or tech entrepreneur: male, Caucasian/Asian/Indian subcontinental, high-income or college student, SF to Milpitas.

airhead969··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
Yes, that's absolutely right.

Also, I noticed how most underdog / less socially-acceptable lifestyle/interest forums tend to be pleasant, humorous, and reasonable. The other aspect maybe that marginalized people (without chips on their shoulders resentment) know what it feels like to be othered / not treated well and go out-of-their-way to be friendlier. For example, I can't remember any LGBT+ people who aren't cool, decent, and sociable... and I'm the goofy, straight, ally interloper stealing all the pretty cis girls (or they're stealing me, IDK).

On niche interests-side where it's a small world, I think the cosiness reduced sized and inherent common interests also reinforce, promote better behavior, and friendliness.

Twitter and such definitely throw unbounded numbers of random people at each other, and so the odds of clashing are astronomically-higher. In this alternate (mainstream) universe, the sad part is that social and online ideological Balkanization has cemented echo chambers of memetic civil war; a people divided-and-conquered.
