ahaferburg··on Tesla reports steep drop in profits despite US rush to buy electric vehicles
Welcome to the West? It's been like this for a while now here.
ahaferburg··on I see a future in jj
I tried jj, but I'm used to Sublime Merge. Doing version control in the command line was just too much repeated typing, as you keep losing information. In a GUI you always see the current state. You commit, it updates the display. A diff is a click away. Changing focus to type the commit message is a click away. No reason to ask the same questions again and again. Even with aliases like jjl for `jj log --limit 10` it felt too inefficient and annoying. Selecting individual hunks with the keyboard... I don't ever want to do that again. In SM it's a pleasure.

The git CLI might suck, but SM just doesn't. Looking forward to jj GUIs taking off. Or even better: jj getting integrated into SM.

ahaferburg··on I see a future in jj
You don't need to switch from git to jj. You just try out jj on your git project and see if it clicks. If you don't like it, you just don't continue using it.

I'm wondering why Firefox on Desktop won't offer Reader mode on this page. The F9 shortcut doesn't work either. Does anybody know? Is there a content length threshold? The text doesn't seem that short to me.
ahaferburg··on ABC yanks Jimmy Kimmel’s show ‘indefinitely’ after threat from FCC chair
Starts at 2:01.

Kimmel

We hit some new lows over the week end with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it. In between the finger pointer, there was uh grieving. On Friday the White House flew the flags at half staff which got some criticism but on a human level you can... see how hard the president is taking this.

Reporter

My condolences on the loss of your friend Charlie Kirk. May I ask, sir, personally, how are you holding up over the last day and a half, sir?

Trump

I think very good, and by the way right there you see all the trucks. They've just started construction of the new ball room for the White House, which is something they've been trying to get, as you know, for a 150 years, and it's going to be a beauty.

Kimmel

Yes. He's at the fourth stage of grief. Construction.

Demolition. Construction. This is not how an adult grieves the murder of somebody called their friend. This is how a four year old mourns a gold fish, ok? And it didn't just happen once.

ahaferburg··on A receipt printer cured my procrastination
Same here. Going through dozens of post-its feels super wasteful. Even more so the dozens of thermal printers that will be ordered as a result of this post, and might end up gathering dust on someone's attic in two weeks.

Ultimately there's going to be a lot of repetition. Many of these tasks are going to be the same. I'm wondering if there's a variant of this system that involves reusable kanban tickets.

Seems cool. Sponsors some really interesting projects.

Such a fantastic project! Any presentation by Andreas is a great watch, especially this one. So good to hear that things are taking shape, and the browser seems to be coming along nicely.

Also interesting to learn about FUTO. Seems like a cool thing to watch out for. https://futo.org/about/what-is-futo/

ahaferburg··on The top 10% owns 87% of the stocks
Since 2019, large corporations the world over have been forced to open up their books to fiscal entities in their respective countries. Every country could tax what these companies earn in their country, and also add some penalty for evaded taxes booked in other countries.

We can do the same with billionaires and their assets.

The tax evasion industry (for corporations as well as for individuals) needs way more regulation and penalties. These firms inflict a net negative cost on society.

ahaferburg··on The top 10% owns 87% of the stocks
It's not a slight drift, it's a massive change since the 1950's.

Looking at averages is completely irrelevant when talking about inequality.

ahaferburg··on The top 10% owns 87% of the stocks
> in a very short time

Citation needed. This seems highly implausible.

Wealth is mostly inherited, and amassed over generations. The wealthy become more wealthy because they already have wealth. If you take that away, all those wealth management skills matter a lot less.

ahaferburg··on The top 10% owns 87% of the stocks
I am taking a deep dive into inequality thanks to Gary Stevenson. He has a lot of educational videos on his channel. Highly recommended.

Here's how I would sum up his main argument: Ordinary people have less money and can no longer afford to buy property. Governments have less money, infrastructure everywhere is eroding. So where does all the wealth go? The only possible answer is to the very rich, who are doing better than ever, while everyone else is down financially.

To be clear, this is not about the entrepreneur who made a couple million bucks and has three houses. It's about the top 0.1 % who are sucking everyone else dry, permanently: The poor, the middle class, and the government.

We need to do something to reverse this trend. And soon.

ahaferburg··on The Efficiency of Vim
Well, to be honest that's where I cheated because I assumed that auto-format would fix it.

In Sublime Text there was an addon that did that. I assume something similar exists for VS Code.

To align the items manually I would Tab (or Space) as much as necessary so that each item has enough space for the alignment. I would then use the mouse to create multiple cursors in the same column. In VS Code it's drag MMB, in Sublime it's Ctrl+LMB or sth. Then Ctrl+Shift+Arrow_Right, Ctrl+Shift+Arrow_Left to select the spaces up until the (misaligned) beginnings of the words, then hit Delete.

ahaferburg··on The Efficiency of Vim
It's much faster to do this with multi-cursor editing in VS code or Sublime Text. And more intuitive and way easier to learn.

Select the $, Ctrl+D to select the other ones, then select and copy the identifiers. Took me 28 seconds in total.
