agrover··on Some notes on Rust
I'm a C/Python person, and it did take a question on irc for me to get my head around how Rust does it, but now it seems so natural that it's a little irksome to look at some of my Python code :)

Gnome needs a dbus api that currently only systemd supports, which is not quite the same thing.

agrover··on Why pro-systemd and anti-systemd people will never get along
I think the fallacy is looking at the composability of tools on the command line and thinking you want/need the same composability in how the system runs. You don't. The Unix Way is actually TWO things: one is shellscripting and the composability of the command line, and the other is C and libraries. "Whipupitude vs manipulexity", to quote Larry Wall. Systemd is the result of determining that running system services is complex and needs to be handled by a real program instead of scripts. This is easier in C, but the flipside is the unavoidable loss of whipupitude. For most people this is fine. When Unix was young, whipping up something simple was fine. Now it isn't, and really hasn't been for quite a long time.
agrover··on How feminism helped me solve one of file systems’ oldest conundrums
It's not about sexism, it's about decreasing "geek machismo" that has existed in the community, and how this helps more people be comfortable putting themselves out there and having a technical discussion (where there is always a nonzero chance one is wrong) in public.

fwiw the Kernelnewbies list and irc is another good place to start for civil kernel discussion. I would suggest that common to both it and Linuxchix is the belief that no matter what the questioner or respondents' level of expertise, the only possible response to a question is a positive, helpful one.

agrover··on The optional “else” in Python loops
Ah, I misremembered, "nobreak", not "notfound".
agrover··on The optional “else” in Python loops
Raymond Hettinger, one of the main Python devs, advises that the "else" in this situation should mentally be thought of as "notfound".
agrover··on How compatible is LibreSSL?
I thought the libressl devs thought it was a mistake to even try to fall back -- the code should use OS-provided random numbers, and if they're not there, give up. If so, I'm a little surprised to hear libressl is trying harder than openssl.

agrover··on textfsm – Python module for parsing semi-structured text into Python tables
On one hand, cool! On the other hand, uncool, if it encourages more people to have their programs interact with other programs via CLI parsing. We should be using APIs and libraries instead of working around the lack of them.
