agoodusername63··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
My man that’s an ad

Many posts on HN are ads. We’ve just collectively decided that some of them are OK

agoodusername63··on Brown/MIT shooting suspect found dead, officials say
I believe the theory that Mangione even wanted to be caught and arrested because he didn't see a viable life for himself anymore with his spinal problems and medical bills. Who social engineers their way into getting a CEO's itinerary and then keeps a manifesto on their person well after the crime

Now he doesn't have to worry about paying for that. Or getting reasonable treatment but hey,

agoodusername63··on AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D sells for more than 9800X3D, enthusiasts flock to AM4 DDR4
How?

Consoles don’t pay for online subscriptions with f2p games anymore, which is the overwhelming lions share of online play today.

Consoles also get to flip games you’re done with. I’m positive about 3 of my friends spend much less than I do on gaming these days because of all the games they buy, play once, then flip again on FB market place

And then you get to the rising entry level cost of PC gaming. If you want something better than a Steam deck you’re looking at 1K USD to start with an Intel dGPU

But I guess if you’re fine with a Steam deck it’s a bit cheaper than consoles to start

The best claim that PC gaming has today is that it has a much larger library with indies that don’t release on console

agoodusername63··on TikTok Deal Is the Shittiest Possible Outcome, Making Everything Worse
Hard to call it outsmarting when your opponent is a toddler
agoodusername63··on Valve is running Apple's playbook in reverse
It really depends on your GPU drivers.

If you're using nvidia like 75% of Steam's hardware survey reports, it's a mixed bag and 1% lows are fucking abysmal compared to windows.

But try getting nvidia to care about Linux beyond CUDA. They'd rather just stop selling GPUs to normal people before they do that.

agoodusername63··on AWS CEO says replacing junior devs with AI is 'one of the dumbest ideas'
idk about that with the rising cost of hardware. But I guess if your IT dept is doing the purchasing thats not really your problem.
agoodusername63··on Valve: HDMI Forum Continues to Block HDMI 2.1 for Linux
I just use a DisplayPort to hdmi cable. Works well on my 4k@120 TV

news to me.
agoodusername63··on The RAM shortage comes for us all
If openai was building out with DDR5 that would create a big ol supply of DDR5 to make RAM cheap.

No. They bought the wafers for HBM. The only thing thats going to get cheap when openai implodes are server stuff for homelab bros. The RAM manufacturers are using their production capacity to produce HBM for openai.

agoodusername63··on The RAM shortage comes for us all
maybe if he didn't buy all those yachts and submarines. alas.
agoodusername63··on The RAM shortage comes for us all
isn't that what the mixture of experts trick that all the big players do is? Bunch of smaller, tightly focused models
agoodusername63··on The RAM shortage comes for us all
Went after the right component too. RAM manufacturers love an opportunity to create as much scarcity as possible.
agoodusername63··on Gaming on Linux has never been more approachable
Do you think that the average HN commenter has the same phishing risk as your grandpa?

They're fine.

agoodusername63··on WBlock: A New Ad-Blocker for Safari
Is it? I searched wBlock in the ios app store and found nothing.
agoodusername63··on Steam Machine
none of these consoles are "usable"

I'm pretty into emulation. It's very misleading to claim that "modern consoles are emulatable" when no, only nintendo has emulators you can boot up, pick from a very large list of compatible games, and have a consistent experience that any sane person would want out of these.

Sony disappears after PS3 and xbox... well I guess xemu is Fine, but you're going to play for an hour and then come to the conclusion that you're better off hooking up the old console

agoodusername63··on Steam Machine
no it shows those guys are willing to take the risk and learn the water is fine.

most aren't

agoodusername63··on Steam Machine
I apologize that nobody responding to you is understanding the point here that the last thing Linux gaming is, is consistent.
agoodusername63··on Steam Machine
> - most modern consoles are, less-legally, emulatable

wheres the PS4 or like, any xbox emulator?

It's just Nintendo that has modern, usable emulators for most of the games you'd want to play. xbox never got lucky for basically any of their consoles and Sony never got anything usable after PS3.

agoodusername63··on AOL to be sold to Bending Spoons for $1.5B
I'd be super down for GPUs to be cheaper again.
agoodusername63··on AWS to bare metal two years later: Answering your questions about leaving AWS
Yeah I'm one of them. Started as an on-site Linux sysadmin. Moved to cloud SRE because remote is plentiful and it pays better.

I get crap recruiters in my inbox and LinkedIn every other week with the worst offers to go back to on-site bare metal admin. 30% less pay, on-site requirements, and it's a contracted position?

I need that Futurama "oh you're serious, let me laugh harder" gif

If companies want to whine that good Linux datacenter ops doesn't exist anymore, laugh in their faces.

agoodusername63··on Nvidia DGX Spark: When benchmark numbers meet production reality
I thought about how to reply to this for a minute and then realized that I'm so desensitized by American tech companies that all the nonsense NVIDIA gets up to to maintain their economic position barely registers to me anymore.
agoodusername63··on Today is when the Amazon brain drain sent AWS down the spout
There was another comment that pointed out how unlikely this is to happen because Amazon is just too big to bring the law down on now.

When you're the, what. Second? Third? Largest employer in the US, enforcing the law now becomes a meaningful hit to economic velocity. And as much as Trump hates brown people, his administration has begrudgingly revealed that there are moves that his billionaire buddies Will Not Allow.

I'm no fan of ice or this administrations deportation strategy, but it's a serious problem that even enforcing the law on Amazon is now an economic liability so much that nobody dares to try

agoodusername63··on KDE Connect: Enabling communication between all your devices
I like this with Linux but it's so inconsistent on windows that I just don't bother with it much anymore. I'm on windows most of the time.
agoodusername63··on Free software hasn't won
My point is that DRM isn’t something that FOSS has any control over, and is becoming an increasingly common strategy to discourage using third party software because it forces compromises.

So when the DRM doesn’t work and you get a degraded experience, pitching anybody who isn’t really interested in the ecosystem of technology is pretty much impossible. One tech stack works well, one doesn’t. That’s all one cares about

agoodusername63··on Free software hasn't won
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink

Yeah we can Properly Educate non techies all day, but when they sit down to watch Netflix and have to deal with low quality video because their FOSS tech stack doesn’t pass the DRM sniff test with flying colors, I’ve yet to get a single person to care after that.

agoodusername63··on Free software hasn't won
It sounds to me like the biggest problem are the users.

There’s no shortage of meaningfully free and open software to use that will do what you need, but as soon as you have to sacrifice any sort of convenience, non techies stops listening.

I really don’t know how you’re going to change that. I don’t think anybody can at this point now that Google and Microsoft are having extremely successful trial runs with fully managed systems.

agoodusername63··on From MCP to shell: MCP auth flaws enable RCE in Claude Code, Gemini CLI and more
> What the issues, if you use quality MCP tools?

Really doesn't help when discovery of "quality" MCP tools, whatever that means, is so difficult.

agoodusername63··on A new experimental Google app for Windows
if this was most other companies or a random github project with decent activity I'd trust this more than installing software from Google on my computer during a time they're extremely interested in building data sets for ML work.
agoodusername63··on Vendors that treat single sign-on as a luxury feature
This is how I've come to accept it too

And honestly when I really really want SSO anyways, I can bolt on vouch proxy for free
