agomez314··on Ask HN: Where on the internet to find honest ratings?
Find individuals. Twitter is a good place, Reddit too. Once you find one, you can usually find related individuals with good taste.
agomez314··on Who knew the first AI battles would be fought by artists?
Probably because they disdain the use of AI being used to copy their IP and distribute it at "machine" scale? Not an artist myself but can imagine I'd be pissed off that a bot is replicating my art with random changes.

HOWEVER, if a person were to ask for permission to use my pictures to feed into an AI to generate a number of images, and that person _selected_ a few and decided to sell them, I wouldn't have a problem with that. Something to do with the permission provided to the artist and an editing/filtering criteria being used by a human makes me feel ok with such use.

agomez314··on I gave ChatGPT the 117 question, eight dimensional PolitiScales test
You know that not all scientific data is "accurate" right? Both in its actual and interpretive sense. Some experiments record bad results which are hopefully later corrected. This could take a long time. And the scientific method is an exploration of observations through which a conclusion is drawn -there's no left/right wing bias in that. Where the bias lies is in the _interpretation_ of results.
agomez314··on What things did you purchase that enhanced the quality of your life in 2022?
A Home Gym - got a new squat rack, a used set of bars and weight plates and an incline chair and it's a game-changer for my physical and mental health. I can just go downstairs and go at it!

Getting twinkle lights to add warmth to our house in the cold, cloudy winter months of Pittsburgh - noticeable change in moods for our family where it doesn't feel depressive all the time but instead conducive to reading and studying.

agomez314··on AI Homework
I do have a problem with accepting "the deluge of information" which is that it will flood over any human-made postings with ease, and we'd be left with low-quality content everywhere we look. "Safe havens" of human-only forums will be left where people can interact with other people and be assured that they are making a connection together. Hacker News is in a way a modern forerunner of such a human-only community (well, mostly ;) )
agomez314··on [dead]
It could be, but having it come from Elon gives it legitimacy unless others think otherwise. I'm open to what others think.
agomez314··on Ask HN: Is Google becoming useless as a search engine, or is it just me?
I recently went through a very similar experience as yours and agree that the medical sites provided by Google are basically pamphlet material. It has indeed become very hard to get detailed, complex information from simply googling things, to the point that I don't trust getting valid info from a google search. Instead, I look for books by authors that are cross-referenced by multiple sources, I look at forums to see what different people agree/disagree on. In other words, I like to look at people from different backgrounds and places agreeing on similar issues or facts to confirm that the possibility of information being true is larger than otherwise.
agomez314··on Ask HN: Which books have made you a better thinker and problem solver?
SICP was a game-changer for the way I think about software and problem-solving in general. Reading Aristotle's works also opened my eyes to all the different ways one can think about a problem (it rids of you of the narrow problem-solving methods we use today). Reading about history in general also opened up my perspective to think about problems in new ways -I recommend the Story of Civilization by Will Durant.
agomez314··on Ask HN: Alternatives to The Economist?
WSJ i read everyday and don't feel like i'm grating my brain against unlike other publications
agomez314··on Goodbye, data science
"Managers will say they want to make data-driven decisions, but they really want decision-driven data"

Ooofff. This is too true. How often is the case that data is collected to test hypotheses vs confirming priors?

agomez314··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving
Discovering HN has given me a better education than my masters degree
agomez314··on Functional programming should be the future of software
It's not just about FP, it's about creating a language that will allow you to think more clearly about the problem. If we cannot graduate our primitives to the level of abstraction that's required for the problem then codebases will be fragile, projects will run over-budget and complexity will forever increase.
agomez314··on Ask HN: What are some of the best books you have read in 2022?
A New History of Modern Computing gave me a huge perspective on computers that I felt I lacked vs others who are older. Crafting Interpreters (Nystrom) makes compilers/interpreters not spooky and fun. Operating Systems: 3 Easy pieces and the xv6 OS manual are also great introductory books that got me interested in OS dev.
agomez314··on Ask HN: What are some of the best books you have read in 2022?
- Conquest: Cortes, Montezuma, and the Fall of Old Mexico by Hugh Thomas , because he brings history to life and the story of the Spanish and the Mexica is stranger than fiction, more subtle and terrible than you might think, and has many lessons on human behavior applicable to today.

- Ecclesiastes by Qoheleth: In my opinion, superior to Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. "Go, eat your bread with enjoyment, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already approved what you do. Let your garments be always white; let not oil be lacking on your head. Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life which he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going." (Eccles 9:11)

- Amusing ourselves to death by Neil Postman: We thought we had to worry about 1984 and big brother. We were wrong. We are living in Huxley's Brave New World where digital media has made us dumber, distracted and cut our connections with one other. Our smartphones substitute rosaries and entertainment becomes the dogma.

- Structure and Intepretation of Computer Programs by Hal Abelson and Gerlad J. Sussman: Need I say more? This books makes me fall in love all over again with programming every time I pick it up.

- Nichomachean Ethics by Aristotle: What does it mean to live well? How can we be happy? Aristotle makes the striking claim that everyone knows how to be happy, but we have to create the habits that are in accord with reason and right judgement in order to get there. Also, happiness is not a state but rather the result of our active will and right ordering of desire. Required reading for any political leader.

- Theory of Computation by Michael Sipser: Javascript frameworks come and go, language standards change, Computer platforms rise and fall, but math and the underling concepts of computation stay the same. Knowing what computation is, what its properties are, etc. will not only make you a better programmer but a better thinker. Church-Turing Thesis essential reading for anyone serious about algorithm design and analysis.

agomez314··on Electric cars reach 18% of new car sales in California compared to 6% in the US
It's amazing how a banal headline like this, which really does not say much, can trigger correlation vs causation debates. It causes the reader to project his/her beliefs into it -- if you're pro-ev: "great! More works needs to be done!" If you're pro-gas: "You see, it's coastal elites buying EVs." From my perspective it's a neutral headline that creates debate due to the superimposition of beliefs from different parties. The questions I get from reading this headline include:

- Why is there a such a large disparity between California vs "rest of US"?

- What makes people think that it's obvious for California to have more EVs than other states?

- what are the contributing factors to people buying more new cars in California?

- what's the ratio of new evs bought vs used evs? How does that compare to the number of used cars sold?

- how has this proportion changed over time?

- what is the rate of growth of sales in new evs in California vs rest of US? Are there states with higher growth of sales vs previous (ratio vs total)?

agomez314··on Product vs. Engineering
Great insight. Like Hal Abelson said, nowadays it's more of a matter of how "you use various kinds of programming styles and techniques like combinators to glue things together." This lowers the bar to programming to more people, making the excuse "i'm not technical" less and less relevant.
agomez314··on Intel and the $1.5T chip industry meltdown
I'm able to read it just fine in Brave Browser
agomez314··on Ask HN: Performance psychology in the workplace?
There are plenty of people I've met who are like this. They can be just as impressive in their relative performance as a star athlete is from an average one. As someone who does frequent exercises, I'd say the same things from sports apply to intellectual work: eat well, sleep well, make your training as hard if not harder than the actual game. This means training your intellectual muscles: read as much as you can about the field, pick up college textbooks (SICP, Theory of Comp, etc.), classic works (C book, Pragmatic Programmer, etc). Turn the scary sounding things (compilers, OS, networking) into exciting, comprehendible subjects. Your workplace performance will increase as a result.

Unfortunately I don't know of communities like this other than the workplace environment, and HN :)

agomez314··on Ask HN: What's Your Biggest Regret?

agomez314··on Ask HN: Examples of Microkernels?
Big Oxide fan, will look into it!
agomez314··on C++ by Example

agomez314··on Ask HN: Does Hacker News still do in person meet ups?
I'd be down to organize an event in Pittsburgh
agomez314··on The Immorality of ‘The Godfather’
why not? why would the Corleone family go through so much trouble to live a criminal life, with all its dangers?
agomez314··on Software engineering research questions
Definitely agree in that we need better tools, but i'd argue that we just need better reasoning to be able formulate the right questions. Asking the right question can lead to surprising and sometimes trivial solutions.
agomez314··on “I survived the TCP transition” (2013)
added. Thanks!
agomez314··on “I survived the TCP transition” (2013)
Some background: new leadership at ARPANET demanded all hosts to switch from the old protocol (NCP) to the new one developed by Cerf and Kahn (TCP). This change caught many by surprise, and the migration was a long and painful one for teams. "The transition from NCP to TCP was done in a great rush...occupying virtually everyone's time 100% in the year 1982. Nobody was ready" (Janet Abbate, Inventing the Internet, MIT Press 1999)
agomez314··on Deconstructing the Bakery to Build a Distributed State Machine
I thought this was going to be an article about how a (real) bakery could be thought of as a state machine, and how, armed with with that knowledge, I could enter the bakery business and take over the industry.
agomez314··on The Collapse of Complex Societies (Book Review)
I also focused in on this sentence. How difficult it becomes for an average person to start new things on his/her own nowadays! The only solution to the diminishing of widespread bureaucracy i can think of is war - but is costly, can take a long time, and most societies don't make it past a civil war. Like a forest fire, it clears away the hubris and overgrowth of process that accumulates over time.
agomez314··on Embracer enters into agreement to acquire The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit IP
"...opening up more transmedia opportunities including synergies across our global group." - this couldn't sound more anti-tolkien. Tolkien wrote particular stories within a particular world - the fact that that has resonated with millions of people worldwide is proof enough (one would think) that the story doesn't need external "nudging" or "expansion" for more media opportunities. Keep telling the same story, for thousands of years without changing. This was the tradition people have been following since time immemorial. Don't let some media group just come by and sweep the floor with it to their liking just because they can. Like the retelling of his stories in RoP, Tolkien fans should stand up and say, "we don't want this, we won't cooperate."
agomez314··on Habitual GPS use negatively impacts spatial memory during self-guided navigation
