ageofwant··on Ask HN: How do you memorize things you read?
Perhaps you should consider your part in that. Or if you could have had a more positive impact on his life apart from kicking him when he was down.
ageofwant··on Showing GUIs from Shell Scripts
No Python bindings, in 2021 ? That's pretty balsy.
ageofwant··on Young People Are Anxious About Climate Change, Say Governments Are Failing Them
You are assuming the supporting environment of the survivors will remain intact enough to allow recovery. That is a somewhat optimistic viewpoint. Most everything in the natural environment will be consumed before people start to die off in significant enough numbers. That will leave the survivors with something that is somewhat less than pristine, and will likely take several generations to recover to some semblance of previous carrying capacity and certainly with enormously reduced biodiversity.

God we did manage to fuck ourselves good and proper.

ageofwant··on Podman: A tool for managing OCI containers and pods
What is your bash depends_on: equivalent ? I like the idea of keeping it simple bash, but seems like it is a step back.
ageofwant··on Malicious PyPI packages stealing credit cards and injecting code
You should mention this in your interviews. Keeping up to date with the state of the art is implicit for me. If I need to spend months retraining or up training because of company policy I expect to be compensated for that while employed.
ageofwant··on Malicious PyPI packages stealing credit cards and injecting code
Interesting that all the noted examples assume a Windows host. I like that, people that use Windows deserve the drama the get ;-)
ageofwant··on Where has all the productivity gone?
For me it has gone into being 'Agile'. 'Agile' has been the largest single worse thing to happen to software development in my experience. It may be appropriate for small shops fighting for their lives, but as a 'waterfall' replacement it has no discernable productivity benefits. It just seems to generate a lot of working the work.
ageofwant··on River Runner: drop a raindrop anywhere in the USA, watch where it ends up
Great piece of work. But what struck me the most is how little of the real America is left. Everything is basically covered by plowed-under farmland. All it takes is Google earth and a bit sensitivity to what you are looking at. Humanity has really left a giant scar on the face of the earth.
ageofwant··on The great resignation is coming?
Most working class people are both time and money poor. To be in a position to buy time back for a better life is a rare privilege, and I'm grateful to be in that position myself.
ageofwant··on The great resignation is coming?
What about the gains from those not having to pay the tax ? Being interrupted and having to do context switches has a significant cost associated.
ageofwant··on Sonder: A Curious Word
'sonder' means 'without' in Afrikaans. In Dutch, the same word is spelled zonder. A common word you'd use at least a few times a day.
ageofwant··on I’ve had the same supper for 10 years
But it could have been absolutely anyone else, with a penis.
ageofwant··on I’ve had the same supper for 10 years
To put your accuser in the nihilism box does not absolve you. It would be extremely unlikely for you to not be a active participant in the process of making the world worse.
ageofwant··on I’ve had the same supper for 10 years
Gut ist der Schlaf, der Tod ist besser - freilich Das beste wäre, nie geboren sein.

Sleep is good. Death is better, but the best is to have never been born.

ageofwant··on I’ve had the same supper for 10 years
This is such an myopic human-centric world view. If every other species had a voice, or an opinion on what the success of man has meant for their own lives, their own families, their own future, what would they say ?

Consider how much man has cost every other living thing on this planet today.

ageofwant··on Plant Blindness
And of course CPBBD https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3CBOpT2-NRvoc2ecFMDCsA
ageofwant··on Plant Blindness
Yes that sounds about right. It takes multiple decades for some semblance of diversity to return to plowed fields. And it will never be the same as before. The soil biodiversity itself is massively degraded. You can speed up the restoration very significantly, assuming that is your plan, by doing mass native plantings and seeding. If you can introduce biochar before or as part of the process the soil biome will also recover much faster.

Many resources online for all of this.

ageofwant··on Australia’s PM suggests Bing adequate if Google blocks searches
Struth. The Libs are fundamentally dependent on the electorate being swayed by the constant anti-labor pro Lib background noise. And it may sway only 3% to the right, but that's enough. 10 minutes of Friendly Jordies, 60% of which is bullshit gags contains more journalism than a full Sunday paper.
ageofwant··on HR is not your friend, and other things I think you should know
Yes, Carlin said it best https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dY3GNt7sG8&ab_channel=Daily...
ageofwant··on HR is not your friend, and other things I think you should know
Sure, but that growth and investment did not and will not benefit you, or most anyone else. That 'value' gets aggregated into a vanishingly small group of hyper valuable individuals. In fact, at this stage the meaning of GDP for example is fundamentally decoupled from the actual wealth of the people.

I encourage you to research Mark Blyth's work on generational wealth and check out 'Angrynomics'

ageofwant··on HR is not your friend, and other things I think you should know
That may be for Capitalism, but that's not what we have today. We have Corporate Feudalism. Capitalism makes a bunch of assumptions about the freedom of the market, freedom of information, freedom of capital and labor and so on - most of which Corporate Feudalism has undermined.

Capitalism and Communism has suffered the same fate from the same source, and this will remain true until we move into the age of plenty from the age of want, and probably beyond.

ageofwant··on Context switching costs more than we give it credit for
Its almost impossible for me to code while listening to music while coding in a high-cadence big-brained language like Python. When I do c, Java or markup like HTML less so. Perhaps this has to do with the fact that Python is very succinct, and you can affect more per line than in "dumber" languages.

Music with lyrics is impossible to code to though.

ageofwant··on We don't need data scientists, we need data engineers
Adopt a good Workflow tool, like apache airflow. Easiest is to rent a service from AWS https://aws.amazon.com/managed-workflows-for-apache-airflow/
ageofwant··on German police take down 'world's largest darknet marketplace'
True, but heavy smokers and drinkers tend to die earlier removing the states burden off supporting them later on. So it kind of evens out.
ageofwant··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
Parlor did not get thrown out of the bar because of their "conservative voices", they got thrown out because they threatened the other drinkers with knifes, shat on the floor and pissed on the tables while shouting 'Fuck Yea America !'

You imply that all "conservative voices" are raging fuckwits, and while I long resisted that big brush view its becoming harder and harder to do. Especially when self-confessed "conservatives" just assert that yea, that's just the way we talk and act, fuck off if you don't like it. And now the conservative snowflakes scream blue murder when the same rules are applied to them.

ageofwant··on A Polar Vortex collapse sequence has begun
Yes. There are other ways as well of course, but less people will be great for the world.

Its basic stuff really http://www.vhemt.org/

ageofwant··on A Polar Vortex collapse sequence has begun
It is only politicized because you and others have allowed yourselves to be manipulated to a point of confusion. The tool has indeed worked you over well and good.

Here is what we know: Anthropogenic climate change is a fact[1]

ageofwant··on Amazon, Apple and Google Cut Off Parler
It's a wake up call for democrats. Stop blaming fake news and alike.

Internet became conservative minefield swamp and you haven't done anything about it besides blaming.

Build the venues to reach people. Invest in media that speak your language.

Counter all fake news with strong and convincing media you control.

Do it before their "peaceful protestors" will burn the rest of our cities.

ageofwant··on Asahi Linux: Linux on Apple Silicon project
I don't think they have to do anything but publish the specs. That's not 'support' as far as I'm concerned. In fact its easy to argue that Apple will benefit from motivated top tier hacker feedback on their designs.
ageofwant··on I almost quit caffeine in one year
I started getting headaches on Saturday evenings and could not figure out why. I realized I don't drink coffee on weekends, as the work provided a very reasonable espresso machine. I now make sure I drink at least a cup of tea over weekend days :-)

Caffeine is indicated as a protector against Alzheimers. The disease is prevalent in my family, so I have good reason to make sure I'm Joe'd up.
